The social nature of parks: associations between social interactions and park visitation and physical activity among children and adolescents.

Parks can support physical activity and socializing. While children and adolescents' use of these settings is largely socially driven, little is known about relationships between social factors and park visitation and physical activity. This study examined associations between social interactions in parks and park use behaviour among children and adolescents, respectively. Children (8-12 years, n = 213) and adolescents (13-18 years, n = 210) self-reported accompaniment, frequency of socializing during park visits, frequency of seeing known people in parks, park visitation (frequency, duration)

Maternal oxytocin administration mitigates nociceptive, social, and epigenetic impairments in adolescent offspring exposed to perinatal trauma.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) alter brain development, leading to vulnerability for chronic pain, mental health disorders, and suicidality. These effects often emerge during adolescence. Importantly, ACEs can occur prenatally, including when exposed to in utero intimate partner violence (IPV) or postnatally as maternal neglect. Maternal social support has demonstrated promise in the mitigation of ACE-related deficits. Oxytocin, which has a role in social-bonding and stress regulation, serves as a suitable surrogate for social support in preclinical studies. Therefore, we aimed to explor…

'Why did you not tell me?': perspectives of caregivers and children on the social environment surrounding child HIV disclosure in Kenya.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to better understand how social factors shape HIV disclosure to children from the perspective of caregivers and HIV-infected children in Kenya. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study using focus group discussions (FGDs) to gain perspectives of caregivers and children on the social environment for HIV disclosure to children in western Kenya. FGDs were held with caregivers who had disclosed the HIV status to their child and those who had not, and with HIV-infected children who knew their HIV status. METHODS: FGD transcripts were translated into English, transcribed, and

Psychosocial and health-related determinants of self-reported unmet healthcare needs in Türkiye: evidence from a nation-wide survey.

BACKGROUND: Equitable access to healthcare services remains a major public health concern, particularly for vulnerable populations. Despite significant improvements following comprehensive healthcare reforms in Türkiye, perceived unmet healthcare needs persist, disproportionately affecting individuals with chronic illnesses, depressive symptoms, and limited social support. This study, therefore, examines gender-stratified associations between these factors and different types of perceived unmet healthcare needs. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2019 Türkiye Health Survey (n = 17,084), a nati…

Quality of life and patient-reported outcomes after non-surgical management of early-stage endometrial cancer and endometrial hyperplasia with atypia: a long-term follow-up of the feMMe phase II randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Non-surgical, fertility-sparing management using a levonorgestrel intra-uterine device is a de-escalation strategy for selected patients with early-stage endometrial adenocarcinoma or endometrial hyperplasia with atypia. Although the oncologic outcomes of the feMMe trial have been reported, long-term patient-reported outcomes remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated long-term quality of life, self-efficacy, social support, and patient-reported experiences following conservative management. METHODS: The feMMe trial (open-label, randomized phase II study) includes th…

Deprivation and poor psychosocial support are key determinants of late antenatal presentation and poor fetal outcomes--a combined retrospective and prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Published guidelines emphasise the need for early antenatal care to promote maternal and neonatal health. Inadequate engagement with antenatal care is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes including maternal death. The factors that influence the uptake and utilisation of maternity care services are poorly understood. We retrospectively explore a large maternity database of births in a large referral UK hospital to capture the socio-demographic factors that influence late pregnancy booking, and then prospectively compare the stress and social support status of consenting early …

Social experience influences thermal sensitivity: lessons from an amphibious mangrove fish.

Understanding the factors affecting the capacity of ectothermic fishes to cope with warming temperature is critical given predicted climate change scenarios. We know that a fish's social environment introduces plasticity in how it responds to high temperature. However, the magnitude of this plasticity and the mechanisms underlying socially modulated thermal responses are unknown. Using the amphibious hermaphroditic mangrove rivulus fish Kryptolebias marmoratus as a model, we tested three hypotheses: (1) social stimulation affects physiological and behavioural thermal responses of isogenic line

Flourishing, social participation and reintegration difficulties: a 2-year cohort study of US military veterans with invisible injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Longitudinal research examining community reintegration among military veterans with invisible injuries remains limited, despite widespread recognition that post-separation adjustment encompasses multiple interconnected domains including mental health, physical health, social functioning, and overall well-being. This study investigated associations between changes in reintegration outcomes and changes in health-related quality of life, social support, and flourishing over a two-year period among U.S. military veterans with invisible injuries who separated from service within the …

Are the components of social reciprocity transdiagnostic across pediatric neurodevelopmental disorders? Evidence for common and disorder-specific social impairments.

Deficits in social communication are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet significant social problems have been observed in youth with many neurodevelopmental disorders. In this preliminary investigation, we aimed to explore whether domains of social reciprocity (i.e., social communication, social cognition, social awareness, social motivation, and restricted and repetitive behaviors) represent transdiagnostic traits. These domains were compared across youth ages 7-17 with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; N = 32), tic disorders (TD; N = 20), severe mood dysregulation (N = 3

A qualitative assessment for planning the implementation of a social needs intervention in community-based home visiting.

BackgroundSocial determinants of health (SDOH) and related social needs (e.g., food insecurity, financial strain) are major drivers of maternal health disparities. Pregnant women of color and those with low socioeconomic status (SES) experience a disproportionate burden of social needs, which are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and increased risk of chronic disease for both mothers and children. Home visiting programs represent a promising, community-based platform for identifying and addressing social needs; however, little is known about how these processes occur in practice or ho

Understanding the needs and challenges of unpaid carers caring for someone with drug and alcohol dependency: findings from a national qualitative evaluation.

PURPOSE: The cost-of-living crisis witnessed in the UK, in addition to the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, has exacerbated growing concerns about its disproportionate impact on caregivers. All caregivers face unprecedented challenges, but this is further intensified when caring for someone with drug and alcohol dependency which this paper argues are direct social harms. METHODS: This paper presents findings from an external evaluation of three projects from a wider national programme funded by NHS England and Improvement [NHSE/I]. Identified by NHSE/I as a vulnerable community, interv
