STAT6: A review of a signaling pathway implicated in various diseases with a special emphasis in its usefulness in pathology.

Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 6 (STAT6), belonging to a family of seven similar members is primarily stimulated by interleukin(IL)-4 and IL-13, and acts as a T helper type 2 (Th2)-inducing factor. Thus, it is implicated in the pathophysiology of various allergic conditions, such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, eosinophilic esophagitis and food allergies, but also in tumor microenvironment regulation. Furthermore, certain forms of lymphomas, notably the Hodgkin lymphoma group, the primary mediastinal and primary central nervous system lymphoma, as well as some follicular and T

Gallbladder wall thickening in patients with IgG4-related diseases, with special emphasis on IgG4-related cholecystitis.

OBJECTIVES: Gallbladder (GB) wall thickening sometimes occurs in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), a condition for which the name, IgG4-related cholecystitis, was proposed. We examined the radiological findings of the GB in patients with IgG4-related diseases and clinical features of patients with GB wall thickening and presented a hypothesis of its pathogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GB wall thickening was defined by thickness ≥ 4 mm. GB wall thickness was examined in 258 patients with IgG4-related disease. Clinical and imaging findings of 200 patients with AIP with and without G

Pathophysiological Aspects of the Development of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm with a Special Focus on Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Genetic Associations.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a complex degenerative vascular disease, with considerable morbidity and mortality rates among the elderly population. The mortality of AAA is related to aneurysm expansion (the enlargement of the aortic diameter up to 30 mm and above) and the subsequent rupture. The pathogenesis of AAA involves several biological processes, including aortic mural inflammation, oxidative stress, vascular smooth muscle cell apoptosis, elastin depletion, and degradation of the extracellular matrix. Mitochondrial dysfunction was also found to be associated with AAA formation. Th

Socially distanced teaching: The mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on special education teachers.

Little is known about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on special education teachers. Of 468 surveyed across the United States, 38.4% met clinical criteria for generalized anxiety disorder, a rate 12.4 times greater than the U.S. population, and 37.6% for major depressive disorder, a rate 5.6 times greater than the population. Race/ethnicity, gender, or school funding was not related to mental health. The impact of the pandemic was moderate to extreme on stress (91%), depression (58%), anxiety (76%), and emotional exhaustion (83%).

Beyond the School Walls: Keeping Interactive Learning Environments Alive in Confinement for Students in Special Education.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying safety measures, including confinement, has meant an unprecedented challenge for the world population today. However, it has entailed additional difficulties for specific populations, including children and people with disabilities. Being out of school for months has reduced the learning opportunities for many children, such as those with less academic resources at home or with poorer technological connectivity. For students with disabilities, it has entailed losing the quality of the special attention they often need, in addition to a more limited un

Electron microscopy reveals novel external specialized organs housing bacteria in eagle ray tapeworms.

Nutritionally-based mutualisms with bacteria are known to occur in a wide array of invertebrate phyla, although less commonly in the Platyhelminthes. Here we report what appears to be a novel example of this type of association in two geographically disparate and phylogenetically distant species of tapeworms of eagle rays-the lecanicephalidean Elicilacunosus dharmadii off the island of Borneo and the tetraphyllidean Caulobothrium multispelaeum off Senegal. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the grooves and apertures on the outer surfaces of both tapeworms open into exp

Sacral neuromodulation for faecal incontinence - 10 years experience and long-term outcomes of a specialized centre.

INTRODUCTION: Sacral neuromodulation/sacral nerve stimulation (SNM/SNS) has become the most successful method for treatment of faecal incontinence (FI) in the last 10 years. The high efficiency of SNM is based on the electrical stimulation of the external anal sphincter and moreover the mechanism of action of SNS can be explained by the modulation of somatovisceral reflexes and perceptions of afferent information. Therefore the mechanism of action is more complex in contrast to other methods of treatment. In the Czech Republic, the SNM was implemented for the first time in 2010 with the financ

Catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia in patients with electrical storm, with a special focus on patients with Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports on the benefits of catheter ablation (CA) in patients with electrical storm (ES). None of these publications included patients with Chagas disease (ChD). Our aims are to analyze (1) all the cases of ES treated with CA and (2) the subgroup of patients with ChD. METHODS: Prospective analysis of consecutive patients with ES due to monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) treated with CA. RESULTS: We included 38 patients: 28 males; median age of 63.5 (IQR 55-71) years old; ejection fraction (LVEF) 0.30 (0.25-0.40). Sixteen patients (42.1%) had ChD. The patients

Maresin 1, a specialized proresolving mediator, stimulates intracellular [Ca2+ ] and secretion in conjunctival goblet cells.

Mucin secretion from conjunctival goblet cells forms the tear film mucin layer and requires regulation to function properly. Maresin 1 (MaR1) is a specialized proresolving mediator produced during the resolution of inflammation. We determined if MaR1 stimulates mucin secretion and signaling pathways used. Cultured rat conjunctival goblet cells were used to measure the increase in intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+ ]i ) concentration and mucin secretion. MaR1-increased [Ca2+ ]i and secretion were blocked by inhibitors of phospholipase C, protein kinase C, Ca2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II, an
