The effects of progesterone administration and pre-training on learning & memory, anxiety-like behaviors, and balance impairments following traumatic brain injury in male rats: The role of neuroinflammation.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common complication in human societies. In previous studies, the effects of exercise and sex hormones alone have been shown to prevent the progression of cerebral edema, oxidative stress, and inflammation after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study investigated the effects of combined progesterone and exercise after TBI in male rats. METHOD: In this study, 84 rats were divided into 14 groups (7 groups for behavioral tests and 7 groups for evaluating brain water content and molecular and histological parameters, each group containing 6 rats). Th

Longitudinal Biochemical and Behavioral Alterations in a Gyrencephalic Model of Blast-Related Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Blast-related traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a major cause of neurological disorders in the U.S. military that can adversely impact some civilian populations as well and can lead to lifelong deficits and diminished quality of life. Among these types of injuries, the long-term sequelae are poorly understood because of variability in intensity and number of the blast exposure, as well as the range of subsequent symptoms that can overlap with those resulting from other traumatic events (e.g., post-traumatic stress disorder). Despite the valuable insights that rodent models have provided, there

Relationship between Child Sexual Abuse, Psychiatric Disorders and Infectious Diseases: A Matched-Cohort Study.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) has been strongly associated with a range of psychological and physical problems in childhood and adulthood, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and infectious diseases. Despite the strength of these associations, no studies to date have investigated psychobiological processes that might underlie the relationship between CSA and physical health problems occurring during childhood, such as infectious diseases. The goal of the current study is to evaluate PTSD as a potential mediator between CSA and the occurrence of infectious diseases among children

Antecedents and consequences of acute stress disorder among motor vehicle accident victims.

The aim of this study was to examine differences between motor vehicle accident (MVA) victims diagnosed retrospectively with Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and subsequent Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and MVA victims with only PTSD. A total of 14 ASD subjects and 28 PTSD subjects (matched on age and on sex) were compared on subjects' levels of functioning and symptom severity at three time-points: pre-MVA, 1-4 months post-MVA (initial assessment), and 6 months post initial assessment. Fourteen non-MVA subjects were included as controls in the analyses for pre-MVA differences and presence

Anxiety disorders and suicidal behaviour: an update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The primary aim of this review is to present the main findings from the literature published between January 2006 and May 2007 on anxiety and suicidal behaviour. The secondary aim is to present critical comments on methodological issues, highlighting areas for future research. RECENT FINDINGS: Traditionally, anxiety disorders have not been viewed as independent risk factors for suicidal behaviour, and therefore assessment of anxiety disorders has not been particularly emphasized in clinical enquiries and suicide screening tools. This review identifies evidence suggesting th

Involuntary autobiographical memories as a transdiagnostic factor in mental disorders.

Involuntary autobiographical memories are memories of personal events that come to mind with no preceding retrieval attempts. They have been studied broadly in autobiographical memory for decades and shown to be common and mostly positive in everyday life. Clinical literature has focused on negative intrusive memories of stressful events and tended to neglect other forms of involuntary autobiographical memories. However, recently, there has been an upsurge of research addressing involuntary memories more broadly in clinical disorders, including both stressful and mundane memories, and both rea

Acute stress disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder in victims of violent crime.

OBJECTIVE: In a group of crime victims recruited from the community, the authors investigated the ability of both a diagnosis of acute stress disorder and its component symptoms to predict posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at 6 months. METHOD: A mixed-sex group of 157 victims of violent assaults were interviewed within 1 month of the crime. At 6-month follow-up 88% were reinterviewed by telephone and completed further assessments generating estimates of the prevalence of PTSD. RESULTS: The rate of acute stress disorder was 19%, and the rate of subsequent PTSD was 20%. Symptom clusters bas

Long-Term Maternal Stress and Post-traumatic Stress Symptoms Related to Developmental Outcome of Extremely Premature Infants.

In this study, we examined the relations between the severity of developmental outcomes of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) children and their mothers' stress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, 4-16 years after birth. Israeli mothers (N = 78) of a cohort of extremely premature infants (24-27 weeks) born 4-16 years earlier were asked to report about the medical and developmental condition of their child and their current perceived stress and PTSD symptoms. Results show that mothers of ELBW children with normal development reported the lowest perceived stress compared with moth

Auricular Trauma Protocol for Trauma Spectrum Disorders: Development, Rationale, and Clinical Applications.

The Auricular Trauma Protocol (ATP), developed by Helms, Elkiss, and Pittman, is a six-point auricular acupuncture protocol designed for rapid, field-applicable treatment of trauma spectrum disorders. Initially developed for U.S. military use, ATP has since been applied in civilian contexts for post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, insomnia, and pain. This article reviews the protocol's historical development, theoretical underpinnings in neurobiology, point rationale, and clinical applications, including evidence from case studies and field implementation. The ATP exemplifies a neurobiolog

An Evolutionary Medicine Perspective on Treatment of Pediatric Functional Abdominal Pain.

In a recent issue, Kovacic et al. analyze data from a randomized sham-controlled trial and show that pretreatment vagal efficiency, an index related to respiratory sinus arrhythmia, is a predictor of pain improvement in adolescents with functional abdominal pain when treated with auricular percutaneous electrical nerve field stimulation. The underlying premise is the polyvagal hypothesis, an explanatory framework for the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system, which proposes that functional gastrointestinal disorders can result from a chronic maladaptive state of autonomic neural

How prevalent are anxiety disorders in schizophrenia? A meta-analysis and critical review on a significant association.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of anxiety disorders (AD) in schizophrenia (SZ) is attracting increasing interest. However, published studies have yielded very broad variations in prevalence rates across studies. The current meta-analysis sought to (1) investigate the prevalence of co-occurring AD in SZ by reporting pooled prevalence rates and (2) identify potential sources of variations in reported rates that could guide our efforts to identify and treat these co-occurring disorders in patients with SZ. METHODS: We performed a systematic search of studies reporting prevalence of AD in SZ and related

Common mental health problems among patients accessing care at ayurvedic health centers in Udupi Taluk.

INTRODUCTION: Increased work pressure, lifestyle modifications, and deteriorated living conditions brought on by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can exacerbate mental health concerns such as anxiety, sleeplessness, depression, and stress-related illnesses. Recent studies have shown that a high burden of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, stress, panic attacks, impulsivity, irrational anger, somatization disorder, sleep disorders, emotional disturbance, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal thoughts, may be experienced by COVID-19 survivors

Personalised Speech-Based PTSD Prediction Using Weighted-Instance Learning.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent disorder that can develop in people who have experienced very stressful, shocking, or distressing events. It has great influence on peoples' daily life and can affect their mental, physical, or social wellbeing, which is why a timely and professional treatment is required. In this paper, we propose a personalised speech-based PTSD prediction approach using a newly collected dataset which consists of 15 participants, including speech recordings from people with PTSD and healthy controls. In addition, the dataset includes data before and after

What about heart and mind in the COVID-19 era?

From the time of Hippocratic medicine, heart-brain interactions have been recognized and contributed to both mental and physical health. Heart-brain interactions are complex and multifaceted and appear to be bidirectional. Exposure to chronic and daily stressors such as quarantine, or severe psychological trauma like a significant person in danger of life can affect the cardiovascular system and the emotional experience of the individual, leading to an increased risk of developing a cardiovascular disease or mental illness. Subjects with comorbidities between mental disorders and heart disease

The Relationship Between Perceptions of Response to Disclosure of Childhood Sexual Abuse and Later Outcomes.

This study assessed whether perceptions of others' reactions to disclosure are related to psychological and physical outcomes among individuals with a history of child sexual abuse. Eighty-six female undergraduates completed a series of questionnaires assessing child sexual abuse, nonsexual trauma, depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, somatic symptoms, disclosure, and social reactions to disclosure. Those who reported child sexual abuse endorsed higher levels of psychological and physical symptoms than those who reported a nonsexual traumatic event. Child sexual abuse survivors

Sex-specific vulnerability to single prolonged stress: behavioral alterations and redox imbalance in the developing brain.

Single prolonged stress (SPS) is a validated rodent model for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-like symptoms. While its effects have been extensively characterized in adults, little is known about its impact during the juvenile phase, a critical period for brain maturation. In this study, male and female rats were subjected to SPS at postnatal day 23 and, 7 days later, behavioral outcomes were assessed. Given increasing evidence implicating redox dysregulation in stress-related disorders, we also investigated the redox-related markers in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus, two st

The contribution of self-disclosure as a personal and interpersonal characteristic within the couple relationship to recovery from posttraumatic stress.

OBJECTIVE: Much research has been conducted on the clinical course of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), from the perspective of viewing it as a chronic disorder. In the present study, however, we propose viewing PTSD via the recovery paradigm, based on the sociointerpersonal model for understanding posttrauma, which offers a holistic and multidimensional definition of recovery and prognosis (Maercker & Horn, 2013). Specifically, the contribution to recovery of both self-disclosure as a personality trait and self-disclosure of traumatic experiences within the couple relationship were examin
