Deep-Learning-Enabled Microwave-Induced Thermoacoustic Tomography Based on ResAttU-Net for Transcranial Brain Hemorrhage Detection.

OBJECTIVE: Hemorrhagic stroke is a leading threat to human's health. The fast-developing microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography (MITAT) technique holds potential to do brain imaging. However, transcranial brain imaging based on MITAT is still challenging due to the involved huge heterogeneity in speed of sound and acoustic attenuation of human skull. This work aims to address the adverse effect of the acoustic heterogeneity using a deep-learning-based MITAT (DL-MITAT) approach for transcranial brain hemorrhage detection. METHODS: We establish a new network structure, a residual attention

Mechanistic study of ultrasound-assisted chromatography using plastic and stainless steel columns.

Based on the previous ultrasound-assisted chromatography (UAC) studies on plastic and stainless steel (SS) columns, this study explores the UAC mechanism by comparatively analyzing ultrasound effects on plastic and SS columns with C18 stationary phase when separating a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) under various ultrasound intensities. The results showed a substantial difference in H values between the PEEK and SS columns under the influence of ultrasound agitation. Specifically, for the pyrene peak, as the ultrasonic intensity increased from 0% to 100% of 900 W, the H val

Vocal tract allometry in a mammalian vocal learner.

Acoustic allometry occurs when features of animal vocalisations can be predicted from body size measurements. Despite this being considered the norm, allometry sometimes breaks, resulting in species sounding smaller or larger than expected for their size. A recent hypothesis suggests that allometry-breaking mammals cluster into two groups: those with anatomical adaptations to their vocal tracts and those capable of learning new sounds (vocal learners). Here, we tested which mechanism is used to escape from acoustic allometry by probing vocal tract allometry in a proven mammalian vocal learner,

Reflux symptoms and vocal characteristics in adults with non-organic voice disorders.

BACKGROUND: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is prevalent and can lead to voice disorders, but its diagnosis is difficult, because of limited correlations between clinical symptoms and organic pathology. Various tools and methods have been explored to aid a diagnosis of LPR. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between reflux symptoms, acoustic-, perceptual-, and physical vocal characteristics, glottal function index (GFI), and vocal handicap index (VHI) in adults with non-organic voice disorders. METHODS: Data of 51 adults with non-organic voice disorders were collected, using a retrospecti

Diagnostic radiological examinations and risk of intracranial tumours in adults-findings from the Interphone Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation is among the few well-established brain tumour risk factors. We used data from the Interphone study to evaluate the effects of exposure to low-dose radiation from diagnostic radiological examinations on glioma, meningioma and acoustic neuroma risk. METHODS: Brain tumour cases (2644 gliomas, 2236 meningiomas, 1083 neuromas) diagnosed in 2000-02 were identified through hospitals in 13 countries, and 6068 controls (population-based controls in most centres) were included in the analysis. Participation across all centres was 64% for glioma

Sex difference in cognitive behavioral alterations and barrel cortex neuronal responses in rats exposed prenatally to valproic acid under continuous environmental enrichment.

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that can affect social interactions and sensory-motor behaviors. The present study investigates the effect of environmental enrichment (EE) on behavioral alterations and neuron responses associated with the barrel cortex of young adult female and male rats exposed prenatally to valproic acid (VPA). Pregnant female rats were pretreated with either saline or VPA (500 mg/kg, IP) on day 12.5 of gestation. Male and female pups were exposed to either EE or standard-setting (non-enrichment) conditions for 1 month (between postnatal day [PND] 30 and

Glycerol-in-SEBS gel as a material to manufacture stable wall-less vascular phantom for ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging.

Styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) copolymer-in-mineral oil gel is an appropriate tissue-mimicking material to manufacture stable phantoms for ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging. Glycerol dispersion has been proposed to further tune the acoustic properties and to incorporate hydrophilic additives into SEBS gel. However, this type of material has not been investigated to produce wall-less vascular flow phantom for these imaging modalities. In this paper, the development of a wall-less vascular phantom for ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging is reported. Mixtures of glycerol/TiO2-in-SEB

Statistical Learning and the Effect of Starting Small in Developmental Dyslexia.

Purpose Impairments in statistical learning abilities of individuals with developmental dyslexia (DD) have been demonstrated in word segmentation and in visual artificial grammar learning (AGL) tasks, but so far, little attention has been devoted to the AGL abilities of this population in the acoustic verbal domain. This study aimed to test whether adolescents with dyslexia have difficulties in extracting abstract patterns from auditory sequences of nonsense syllables based on a finite state grammar relative to typically developing (TD) peers. We also tested whether incremental presentation of

A Longitudinal Evaluation of Speech Rate in Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech.

Purpose Individuals with primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) have apraxia of speech (AOS) in which disruptions in articulation or prosody predominate the speech pattern, referred to, respectively, as phonetic or prosodic subtypes. Many develop aphasia and/or dysarthria. Past research has demonstrated that simple temporal acoustic measures are sensitive to the presence of AOS. The aim of this study was to describe the change in temporal acoustic measures over time and assess if specific patterns of AOS or co-occurring aphasia or dysarthria impact the rate of change over time. Method D

Ultrasound examination of coelomic viscera through the plastron in stranded green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas).

Many projects have been developed in the last years for the conservation of sea turtles. Young green turtles (Chelonia mydas) often nest on the Brazilian coast. Because they nest in beaches along the coastline and islands, green turtles are susceptible to fishing and accidental ingestion of anthropogenic debris. Early detection of ingested debris is crucial for the survival of rescued sea animals. Ultrasound (US) has emerged as a viable imaging technique for visceral examination in veterinary medicine. Previous studies have suggested the left and right cervicobrachial, axillary, pre- and post-

Accuracy and Precision of an Optoacoustic Prototype in Determining Endotracheal Tube Position in Children.

BACKGROUND: Confirmation of endotracheal tube (ETT) tip position and timely identification and correction of malposition is an essential component of care for endotracheally intubated and mechanically ventilated children. We evaluated the ability of a prototype optoacoustic medical device to determine ETT tip position. We hypothesized that the precision of optoacoustic assessment of ETT tip position would be comparable to chest radiography. METHODS: We recruited children aged newborn to 16 y who were admitted to the pediatric ICU requiring tracheal intubation and undergoing a chest radiograph

Brainstem-cortical functional connectivity for speech is differentially challenged by noise and reverberation.

Everyday speech perception is challenged by external acoustic interferences that hinder verbal communication. Here, we directly compared how different levels of the auditory system (brainstem vs. cortex) code speech and how their neural representations are affected by two acoustic stressors: noise and reverberation. We recorded multichannel (64 ch) brainstem frequency-following responses (FFRs) and cortical event-related potentials (ERPs) simultaneously in normal hearing individuals to speech sounds presented in mild and moderate levels of noise and reverb. We matched signal-to-noise and direc

Precise Motor Control Enables Rapid Flexibility in Vocal Behavior of Marmoset Monkeys.

Investigating the evolution of human speech is difficult and controversial because human speech surpasses nonhuman primate vocal communication in scope and flexibility [1-3]. Monkey vocalizations have been assumed to be largely innate, highly affective, and stereotyped for over 50 years [4, 5]. Recently, this perception has dramatically changed. Current studies have revealed distinct learning mechanisms during vocal development [6-8] and vocal flexibility, allowing monkeys to cognitively control when [9, 10], where [11], and what to vocalize [10, 12, 13]. However, specific call features (e.g.,

A New Hypothesis on the Frequency Discrimination of the Cochlea.

OBJECTIVE: Medial olivocochlear efferent (MOCE) neurons innervate outer hair cells (OHCs) of the cochlea, which in turn leads to basilar membrane motion. We hypothesized that MOCE-induced alterations in basilar membrane motion, independent of traveling waves, is responsible for the cochlear frequency discrimination of sound. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven guinea pigs underwent bilateral otoscopic and audiologic evaluations under general anesthesia. The study comprised two parts. Part I (n=11) included spontaneous otoacoustic emission (SOAE) recordings with or without contralateral pure-tone ac

Mechanically Loading Cell/Hydrogel Constructs with Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound for Bone Repair.

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been shown to be effective for orthopedic fracture repair and nonunion defects, but the specific mechanism behind its efficacy is still unknown. Previously, we have shown a measurable acoustic radiation force at LIPUS intensities traditionally used for clinical treatment and have applied this force to osteoblastic cells encapsulated in type I collagen hydrogels. Our goal in this study is to provide insight and inform the appropriate design of a cell therapy approach to bone repair in which osteoblasts are embedded in collagen hydrogels, implanted int

Modulating central gain in tinnitus: changes in nitric oxide synthase in the ventral cochlear nucleus.

A significant challenge in tinnitus research lies in explaining how acoustic insult leads to tinnitus in some individuals, but not others. One possibility is genetic variability in the expression and function of neuromodulators - components of neural signaling that alter the balance of excitation and inhibition in neural circuits. An example is nitric oxide (NO) - a free radical and potent neuromodulator in the mammalian brain - that regulates plasticity via both pre-synaptic and postsynaptic mechanisms. Changes in NO have previously been implicated in tinnitus generation, specifically in the
