Two cases of bilateral renal agenesis (1 pup from each of 2 related bitches) were observed in a purebred Shetland sheepdog breeding colony. Gross postmortem and histopathologic examinations confirmed a diagnosis of bilateral renal agenesis as the cause of death. Two commercial research Beagle breeding colonies began a control program for Filaroides hirthi. All stud dogs and all nonpregnant, nonlactating brood bitches were given two courses, 2-4 weeks apart, of 25 mg/kg body weight albendazole per os twice daily for 5 days. Puppies of treated dams were isolated from puppies of nontreated dams. The proportions of infected puppies of puppies killed in 1979 were 45% and 78% from the two colonies. After 1979, the proportions were 0.2% and 24%. One colony may have had a problem with albendazole toxicity; the problem was stopped by changing the diet.

Albinism was observed in natural populations of the montane vole, Microtus montanus nanus, in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. The authors present a retrospective study of 82 cases of farmer's lung disease in the Aveyron department. Following an outbreak of proliferative pneumonia in a guinea pig breeding colony and subsequet treatment with Tylan, a litter of guinea pigs was found to have multiple urogenital and ocular anomalies. Subsequent mating of the parents produced no abnormal offspring. Chromosome typing on the litter showed no abnormalities. Slow release formulations of hexabutyldistannoxane (TBTO) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were tested for the control of Biomphalaria tenagophila in 52 urban sites in Rio de Janeiro. TBTO acted faster and lasted longer than PCP and at 15 g/m(2) it eliminated snails from 76% of the treated sites for 1 year. Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) primarily describes ulceration in the terminal esophagus, nonglandular squamous mucosa, glandular mucosa of the stomach, and proximal duodenum. EGUS is common in all breeds and ages of horses and foals. This article focuses on the current terminology for EGUS, etiologies and pathogenesis for lesions in the nonglandular and glandular stomach, diagnosis, and a comprehensive approach to the treatment and prevention of EGUS in adult horses and foals.

On sexually matured male rabbits of Shinhilla breed kept in round-the-clock illumination within 5 months, dynamic of changes of structure of pineal gland was investigated. It was found the gradual, progressing in time loss of pinealocytes amount, arising due to their apoptosis, which points out hypolinealism development. Round-the-clock illumination should be considered as the factor promoting accelerated aging of pineal gland.

Primary photosensitization was observed in 11/78 cross-breed calves. The skin lesions were diffuse dermatitis with thickening and wrinkling with areas of alopecia. The severe photosensitivity dermatitis was associated with cocoa shell ingestion. The lesions resolved after removal of the cocoa shells from the feed ration and prevention of exposure to sunlight. Cocoa shells may contain photodynamic agents that cause photosensitization in calves.

There are several pigmentary disturbances which occur in the horse, some of which are primary inherited conditions related to the breed, while others are acquired. All are related to the amount of melanin present in the epidermis, dermis or hair and the activity of melanocytes in these areas may be independent of each other. Within this section, a general discussion of leukoderma and leukotrichia is presented along with a few specific conditions recognized as abnormalities of pigmentation.

Dorsal laminectomy was used to treat 30 dogs with cervical intervertebral disk disease. A variety of breeds were represented, and all animals weighted 15 kg or less. Myelography was utilized to locate each solitary disk herniation. All 30 cases progressed to complete recovery which indicates that dorsal laminectomy may be performed with success in small dogs with intervertebral disk disease.
