Microvasculature in systemic sclerosis.

The considerable amount of consistent data obtained with different techniques regarding the nailfold capillary morphology and function in SSc sheds increasing light on the natural history and the different evolutive patterns of SSc microangiopathy. These data also provide a strong support for a nosologic spectrum of entities like SSc, CREST syndrome, UCTD and prescleroderma RP. From a practical point of view, a more accurate semiologic analysis of RP should provide interesting clues for the clinical management of patients consulting for that vasomotor disturbance. In the next few years, one ca

[The ultrastructural morphogenetic bases of the adult respiratory distress syndrome].

Sequential study of the submicroscopic pathological events characterising the natural history of the adult respiratory distress syndrome has … proteins pass into the alveolus. Finally, in the third stage, the persisting stimulus of pulmonary capillaries leads on the one hand to the formation of hyaline membranes and, on the other, to a reactive lung response in the form of interstitial fibrinogenesis and hyperplasia of granular pneumocytes.

Pathogenesis of proteinuria in idiopathic minimal change disease: molecular mechanisms.

Minimal change disease (MCD) is the most common type of nephrotic syndrome in children and adolescents. The pathogenesis of proteinuria in this condition is currently being reassessed. Following the Shalhoub hypothesis, most efforts have been placed on identifying the putative circulating factor, but recent advancement in podocyte biology has focused attention on the molecular changes at the glomerular capillary wall, which could explain the mechanism of proteinuria in MCD. This report critically reviews current knowledge on the different postulated mechanisms at the glomerular capillary wall

Simultaneous determination of five tetracycline and macrolide antibiotics in feeds using HPCE.

This work demonstrates the potential of HPCE in the analysis of antibiotics in a complex matrix such as feedstuffs. Using 20 mM citric acid-40 mM Na(2)HPO(4) buffer (pH 2.65), the five antibiotics, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxycycline, tilmicosin, and tylosin were successfully separated at 30 kV in a 64.5 cm x 75 microm id capillary. Good repeatability, stability, and reliability of the method were supported by <10% CV with mean recoveries of >70%, and the limit of detection of the five analytes was 0.5-1 mg/kg. It was for the first time that a capillary electrophoretic method was employ

Experience with photocoagulation in Behçet's disease.

Between 1973 and 1987 we examined both eyes of 300 patients with the uveoretinitis-type lesions characteristic of Behçet's disease. Of the 556 eyes whose fundus could be examined, 38 eyes (6.8%) in 33 patients (11%) had developed retinal capillary nonperfusion, branch retinal vein occlusion, or retinal or disc neovascularization. These eyes were treated by photocoagulation, primarily to forestall vitreous hemorrhage and the development of neovascular glaucoma, as well as to decrease the macular edema resulting from vein occlusion. The treatment, which was well tolerated, was successful in clos

Changes in the pulpal vasculature during inflammation.

The reaction and vascular changes of pulpal vessels in experimentally induced acute and chronic pulpitis in dog teeth were investigated using corrosion resin casts and scanning electron microscopic examination. Following a cavity preparation without water cooling, increased permeability of blood vessels occurred in the primary stage of acute pulpitis. This was evidenced by the extravasation of resin in the vascular resin casts. This phenomenon was found initially in the venular network and in the post capillaries of the capillary network located under the dentin. In the resin casts of the vasc…

[Early morphologic changes in the myocardium after a wound of the heart complicated by hemopericardium (experimental study)].

The myocardia of 20 dogs with penetrating injuries of the right ventricles were studied morphologically and histochemically. Microcirculatory disorders found in the myocardium included overfilled venous and capillary bed that eventually led to capillary stasis, interstitial edema, hemorrhagic foci, arteriolosclerosis. For the first time focal disseminated injuries of cardiomyocytes of a segmental, zonal, and contractural type were detected. In line with these lesions, earlier cardiomyocytic changes were found, such as margination of nuclear chromatin, clarification of karyoplasm, interfibrilla

Angiogenic activity as a marker of neoplastic and preneoplastic lesions of the human bladder.

Angiogenic activity has been assessed in biopsy specimens from 49 patients with transitional cell carcinoma, benign prostatic hypertrophy and vesicoureteral reflux. Over 95% of the specimens containing malignant and premalignant transitional epithelium stimulated capillary proliferation on rabbit iris. In contrast, less than 10% of normal tissues had this effect. Sixty-one per cent of specimens with inflammatory round cells were angiogenic but this was reduced to 10% by preincubation with rabbit antihuman lymphocyte serum. Cystitis cystica also induced capillary proliferation even if incubated

Labyrinthine otosclerosis and sensorineural deafness. Pathologic findings of the spiral ligament.

In severe labyrinthine otosclerosis, spiral ligament changes occur predominantly adjacent to the stria vascularis, and consist of a decrease or loss of the capillary-perilymph system. It is suggested that this results in increased concentrations of metabolic products in the cochlear fluids that can no longer be absorbed effectively. If vascular shunts form they might represent collateral channels, with the flow of blood from the cochlea into the otosclerotic focus, bypassing the deficient capillary network in the spiral ligament. The zone of dense collagenization is described as a widening of

Optimized therapeutic potential of Yinchenhao decoction for cholestatic hepatitis by combined network meta-analysis and network pharmacology.

BACKGROUND: Cholestatic hepatitis is recognized as a significant contributor to the development of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. As a well-known classic formula for the treatment of cholestatic hepatitis, Yinchenhao decoction (YCHD) is widely used in countries in Asia, including China, Japan, and Korea. However, in recent years, a risk of liver injury has been reported from Rheum palmatum L. and Gardenia jasmonoides J.Ellis which are the main ingredients of YCHD. Therefore, the question arises whether YCHD is still safe enough for the treatment of cholestatic hepatitis or whether an optimized

Spatiotemporal dynamics of surfactant-driven secondary invasion in Gaussian pore networks.

Capillarity-dominated two-phase displacement in porous media can continue beyond the initial invasion-percolation (IP) breakthrough when surfactants progressively modify interfacial properties and reopen pathways previously sealed by capillary barriers. We study this post-breakthrough secondary invasion, in which adsorption-driven reductions in interfacial tension and wettability shifts lower the capillary-pressure entry thresholds of yet-uninvaded throats, enabling further displacement under a fixed inlet pressure. To capture this mechanism, we develop a time-dependent pore-network framework

Exercise Training Stimulates the Release of Glutathione Peroxidase 1 (GPX1)-Enriched Extracellular Vesicles That Promote Angiogenesis.

An acute bout of high intensity exercise can transiently increase circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) that possess beneficial molecular cargo. However, no studies to date have comprehensively evaluated plasma quantity, protein content, and function of EVs collected from blood after multiple bouts of endurance exercise. Here we demonstrate that 4 weeks of voluntary wheel running increases plasma EV quantity when collected immediately after the last bout of training in mice. These EVs (ExerVs) are enriched in oxidoreductases, including the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1). Repeat

Calcium-activated chloride channels in pericytes and their role in regulating organ blood flow.

Pericytes are mural cells of the microvasculature, characterised by a distinctive 'bump-on-a-log' morphology and elongated processes extending along the abluminal surface of capillary and pre- and post-capillary segments. They are widely distributed across organs and exhibit functional heterogeneity. Contractile pericytes directly regulate local blood flow, whereas non-contractile pericytes contribute to electrical signalling by generating depolarising or hyperpolarising events that propagate to upstream vessels and coordinate tissue perfusion. These functions are closely linked to intracellul

Physical activity reverses the aging induced decline in angiogenic potential in the fast locomotory muscles of mice.

Fast locomotory muscles, which are responsible for generating the highest power outputs, are more vulnerable to aging than slow muscles. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of middle age and voluntary physical activity on capillarization and angiogenic potential in fast locomotory muscles. Middle-aged (M-group) and young (Y-group) wild-type FVB female mice were randomly assigned to either the sedentary or trained group undergoing 8-week spontaneous wheel running (8-sWR). Capillary density (assessed via immunohistochemical capillary staining and Western immunoblotting) of the fast lo

Experimental and Computational Synthesis of TiO2 Sol-Gel Coatings.

During the experimental formation of sol-gel coatings, the colloid dispersions go through a drying process, and the structure of the coatings is formed as a result of complex chemical, colloidal, and capillary interactions. While computer simulations provide guidelines to tune and even design the nanomaterials synthesis, simulations of coating structure formation are hitherto unknown in the literature. Based on real experiments, we establish here a ReaxFF reactive force field-based molecular dynamics simulation protocol in order to investigate and determine the role of the experimental conditi

Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease: a clinical review.

Pulmonary vasculopathy presents as a spectrum of diseases affecting the precapillary pulmonary arterioles, the capillaries and the venules. Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is classified under group 1 pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) as subgroup 1.5 (PAH with features of capillary/venous involvement), and represents a progressive and fatal spectrum of pulmonary vascular disorders. PVOD and pulmonary capillary haemangiomatosis (PCH) can be clinically indistinguishable and often coexist, along with the same risk factors and genetic alterations; they are referred to together as PVOD/P…
