Fragile X syndrome (FXS), caused by a single gene mutation on the X chromosome, offers a unique opportunity for investigation of gene-brain-behavior relationships. Recent advances in molecular genetics, human brain imaging, and behavioral studies have started to unravel the complex pathways leading to the cognitive, psychiatric, and physical features that are unique to this syndrome. In this article, we summarize studies focused on the neuroanatomy and neuroendocrinology of FXS. A review of structural imaging studies of individuals with the full mutation shows that several brain regions are en

Botulism is a neuroparalytic illness caused by toxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, an obligate anaerobe found commonly in the environment. Intoxication with toxin type E is associated exclusively with eating animal foods of marine (salt or fresh water) origin. Persons who eat raw or fermented marine fish and mammals are at high risk for botulism from type E toxin. On July 17, 2002, the Alaska Division of Public Health investigated a cluster of suspected botulism cases among residents of a fishing village in Alaska. This report summarizes the findings of the outbreak investi

The aim of the present study was to analyze mass spectra of scorpions belonging to the genus Parabuthus (Pocock 1890) by means of matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) and to construct a species-specific venom code for species identification. The venom compositions of sixteen Parabuthus species, occurring in southern Africa, were characterized using representative peaks in the molecular mass range of 6400-8400 Da. This mass range is characteristic for the typical long-chain neurotoxins influencing sodium channels. Only a few of these peptides have been

Forty-nine avian Escherichia coli isolates isolated from different outbreak cases of septicemia (24 isolates), swollen head syndrome (14 isolates) and omphalitis (11 isolates), and 30 commensal isolates isolated from poultry with no signs of illness were characterized by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR technique and their serotypes were determined. The ERIC-PCR profile allowed the typing of the 79 isolates into 68 ERIC-types and grouped the isolates into four main clusters (A-D), with the omphalitis isolates being grouped with the commensals and separated from the se

Twenty-five recombinant (mosaic) HIV-1 genomes were detected among 151 samples comprising 118 non-B subtype sequences and 33 samples containing subtype B sequences. Seven of the 25 mosaic patterns were similar to characterized circulating recombinant forms (two A/E, four A/G, and one D/F) and one was a MAL-like A/D recombinant. Eighteen of the recombinants had evidence of subtype A sequences in at least one region of their genome. One sample was found to contain a novel recombinant form (pol F, env K). Two samples could not be characterized unambiguously as recombinant forms and a further one

An epidemiologic investigation was conducted in response to a case of Legionella pneumonia in a scientist working at a federal research facility. A survey of 80 individuals working at the facility revealed that 13 (16%) had sustained prior infections with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lps1) as measured by anti-Lps1 antibodies. Antibody-positive individuals' offices clustered around an air cooling tower and a heating, ventilation, and air conditioner unit (odds ratio = 5). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, individuals of non-white race (adjusted odds ratio = 8) and smokers (ad

The aim of this study was to investigate by computed tomography (CT) whether asbestosis, diffuse pleural thickening and/or pleural plaques are statistically associated. We also tried to find criteria to differentiate between diffuse and circumscribed pleural thickening. From 231 exposed workers, only those subjects whose radiograph showed neither bilateral calcified pleural plaques nor small pulmonary opacities higher than 1/1 grade according to the 1980 International Labour Office (ILO) Classification were considered. Scans were assessed for the presence of subpleural curvilinear lines, septa

We conducted a locomotor disability survey on a heavily mined Taliban-controlled province of Afghanistan to document the problem of locomotor disability and to assess the need for orthopaedic rehabilitation devices in a study population of 12065. Global prevalence of locomotor disability was 23/1000 (95% CI: 20-26). )War-related injuries were the leading cause of disability, affecting almost exclusively adult males. Leading causes of disability among women and children were medical and poliomyelitis. Devices most needed were lower limb ortheses (8.2 devices/1000 people; 95% CI: 5.9-10.4) and o

Familial clustering of cancer causes a problem whether significant differences exist from one person to the next in cancer susceptibility. Such clustering could occur simply by the chance occurrence of common environmental exposure, but in rare families, clustering is caused by discrete genetic factors, some being recessive and some being dominant inheritance with mendelian segregation. In this review article, heritable cancers are listed and discussed. Recent laboratory developments, such as the study on chromosome fragile sites and restriction enzyme-fragment length-polymorphism, to find the

BACKGROUND: Genetic clusters related to Type 2 diabetes (T2D) have differential impact on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), although the underlying mechanisms, such as proteomic perturbation, remain unexplored. We conducted a network Mendelian randomisation (MR) study to identify proteomic mediators linking T2D genetic clusters and CVDs.
METHODS: We assessed the associations between genetic liability to T2D and eight genetic clusters (N = 2 535 601) with 12 CVDs (N ≤ 1 946 349). For significant pairs, we performed a two-step MR (mediation) to identify proteins mediating these associations. Inve

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent reproductive endocrine disorder in women. While the role of androgens in PCOS is well-recognized, the underlying mechanisms warrant further investigation. In this study, we identified potential hub androgen-related genes (ARGs) in PCOS and established diagnostic and classification models to find novel biomarkers for PCOS therapy. Five datasets (GSE34526, GSE80432, GSE95728, GSE124226, and GSE137684) were retrieved from GEO, followed by data normalization and batch effect removal. To identify hub genes, a PPI network was constructed based on diffe

INTRODUCTION: Problem-based learning (PBL) has been a cornerstone of medical education since its introduction at McMaster University in the 1960s. Since the public release of ChatGPT in November 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) tools have increasingly been applied to PBL and case-based learning (CBL) contexts, yet the research landscape at this intersection remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to map the growth trajectory, thematic structure, and collaboration networks of AI-PBL/CBL research from 2019 to 2026.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of Scopus and Web of Science was conduc
