COVID-19 Community Transmission and Super Spreaders in Rural Villages from Manabi Province in the Coastal Region of Ecuador Assessed by Massive Testing of Community-Dwelling Population.

Neglected rural communities in Latin America are highly vulnerable to COVID-19 due to a poor health infrastructure and limited access to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) diagnosis. Manabí is a province of the Coastal Region of Ecuador characterized by a high prevalence of rural population living under poverty conditions. In the current study, we present the retrospective analysis of the results of a massive SARS-CoV-2 testing operation in nonhospitalized populations from Manabí carried out from August to September 2020. A total of 4,003 people from 15 cantons were t

How Does Family Communication Relate to Adolescent Dating Violence and Externalizing Behaviors? The Role of Parent-Adolescent Risk Communication and Attitudes toward Violence in a Nicaraguan Sample.

Family plays a critical role for adolescent socialization. Parents in particular can promote either adolescent prosocial or problem behaviors. The purpose of the present study is two-fold. The first is to investigate the main and interaction effects of family communication (i.e., verbal hostility and expressiveness) on adolescent risk behaviors (i.e., dating violence and externalizing behaviors). The second is to test whether family communication is indirectly associated with adolescent risk behaviors through parent-adolescent risk communication and adolescent attitudes toward violence. Understanding the costs and the cost structure of a community-based HIV and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention program: the Woza Asibonisane Community Responses Program in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The Woza Asibonisane Community Responses (CR) Programme was developed to prevent HIV infections and gender-based violence (GBV) within four provinces in South Africa. The Centre for Communication Impact (CCI) in collaboration with six partner non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implemented the programme, which was comprised of multiple types of group discussion and education activities organized and facilitated by each NGO. To date, little information exists on the cost of implementing such multi-objective, multi-activity, community-based programmes. To address this information g

From molecular evolution to the school health room: the role of community-based public health nurses (helsesykepleiere) in one health communication on cross-species influenza transmission in Norway.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b viruses have undergone an unprecedented expansion of host range since 2021, moving from wild birds and poultry into dairy cattle, domestic cats, and other mammals, with sporadic human infections in Europe and North America (Food and Agriculture Organization et al., 2025a; Rolfes et al., 2025). This expansion is underpinned by well-characterised molecular mechanisms of influenza A virus evolution - antigenic drift, gene segment reassortment, and receptor-binding adaptation - that shape the frequency and direction of cross-species s

A community-based participatory research and community health workers-led health education strategy for schistosomiasis control among schoolchildren in Pemba Island, Zanzibar: a cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis remains an intractable public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. While mass drug administration (MDA) has been the cornerstone of control, its limited impact on sustained behavioral change and persistent transmission in high-intensity transmission areas underscores the urgent need for complementary strategies. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach led by community health workers (CHWs), compared to conventional health education, in achieving sustainable schistosomiasis control among schoolchildren in

A lignocellulose-degrading synthetic microbial community alters physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and functional gene potential during green waste-cattle manure co-vermicomposting.

Co-vermicomposting high-lignin green waste with cattle manure can improve nutrient supply and microbial activity; however, this technology remains limited in terms of lignocellulose degradation efficiency and product quality improvement. This study evaluated the effects of 5% calcium superphosphate (SSP), 5% synthetic lignocellulose-degrading microbial communities (SynComs), and their combined addition on vermicompost quality, microbial communities, and the functional potential related to carbohydrate degradation and nitrogen cycling. The results showed that all treatments maintained a neutral

Understanding the role of patient communication protocols in sexually transmissible infections point-of-care testing among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in remote communities: a qualitative study.

Background Untreated sexually transmissible infections (STIs) such as Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae can lead to serious health issues, including pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility in women, increased HIV risk, and emotional distress. Timely testing and treatment are crucial for reducing transmission. Australia's STI Management Guidelines recommend regular STI testing every 6-12months for sexually active individuals aged 15-35 years in high-prevalence, remote areas. However, testing uptake remains low among young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This analys
