OBJECTIVE: To discuss neurological involvement of Behçet's disease and therapeutical possibilities.
PATIENTS: Among 110 patients with Behçet's disease, 16 were found to have neurological involvement. All these patients fulfilled Japanese and International Study Group criteria for diagnosis of Behçet's disease.

Ataxic hemiparesis with cerebellar-like features has been reported following infarction or hemorrhage of the thalamus. We describe five patients with incoordination and corticospinal tract signs in the limbs opposite a dorsolateral thalamic hemorrhage. In four patients the hemorrhage extended superiorly into the lateral ventricle, the adjacent paraventricular region, and the upper and medial parts of the posterior limb of the internal capsule. We report a 50-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed stroke-like symptoms, including disturbance of consciousness and severe left hemiparesis. Clinical data, neuroimaging, and neuropathology of 17 patients with central nervous system tuberculosis were reported. Of this population, 12 were men, 5, women; ages ranged from 23 to 75 years (mean, 46.9). There were three HIV positive patients among them. One of the extremely rare systemic venous anomalies is double left brachiocephalic veins (LBVs). In the current work, a rare association of double LBVs with a vascular ring and normal intracardiac anatomy is described in fetal life with postnatal confirmation using echocardiography and computed tomography. The prenatal diagnosis of such an infrequent lesion is feasible using fetal echocardiography. Despite the smooth prenatal and postnatal course, potential risk during certain interventions or surgeries should be highlighted in parent counseling.

Involvement of the abdominal organs has variable presentations mostly without specific findings. The objective of this pictorial essay was to illustrate the computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of abdominal involvement in systemic amyloidosis. Heterogeneous appearance of the liver, periportal involvement, diffuse low signal intensity of spleen on T2-weighted MRI, and thickened bowel wall may be helpful imaging findings when accompanied by presence or history of chronic inflammatory disease and clinical suspicion for amyloidosis.

The patient presented with syncope, without chest pain and dyspnea. There was no peripheral edema or nervous system signs. The electrocardiogram (ECG) showed QT-interval prolongation with T-wave inversion in anterior and inferior leads. T-wave inversion in the right-sided precordial leads should prompt consideration of right ventricular overload. The patient underwent computed tomography of the chest that demonstrated pulmonary embolism. Ultrasonography of the veins of the lower limbs revealed an isolated calf vein thrombosis.

Hemoperitoneum due to nontraumatic liver rupture is rare. The most common cause of nontraumatic rupture of the liver is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The other causes of nontraumatic liver ruptures are peliosis hepatis, polyarteritis nodosa, systemic lupus erythematosus, preeclampsia, metastatic carcinoma, and other primary liver tumors. In this report, we present the computed tomography findings of spontaneous liver rupture in a 52-year-old male patient due to multifocal HCC, with the diagnosis proven by surgical specimen.

Aneurysms of the intrathoracic subclavian artery are extremely rare. A 74 year-old man was referred to our hospital with an abnormal chest X-ray film. Contrast computed tomography revealed an intrathoracic left subclavian artery aneurysm. Via left 4th posterolateral thoracotomy, the aneurysm was exposed under systemic deep hypothermia and circulatory arrest. The distal arch was replaced with a 26 mm single-branched graft and the left subclavian artery was reconstructed with a 10 mm graft.

This review describes the technique and applications of an emerging bronchoscopic approach utilizing three-dimensional reconstructions of chest computed tomography scans to facilitate electromagnetic guidance to peripheral lung nodules. This approach, electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy, is useful for biopsy, placement of fiducial markers, or dye marking of overlying pleura prior to thoracoscopic wedge resection. This technique offers some potential advantages over other forms of biopsy. The design, application, relative advantages and pitfalls of this system are the subject of this review

We performed thoracoscopic resection of a middle mediastinal noninvasive thymoma in a 69-year-old woman. Chest computed tomography on admission showed a tumor, 75 x 48 x 32 mm in size, and pathological examination revealed a spindle-cell, noninvasive thymoma, of type A according to the World Health Organization classification, and stage I according to the Masaoka staging system. Thymomas are prone to ectopic occurrence, and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of middle mediastinum tumors.

Computed tomography scout view is a mode of operating a CT system. It is generally used to prescribe CT slices and to display slice locations rather than for direct diagnosis. However, we found that a careful study of CT scout view can contribute significantly to the diagnosis. We show seven abdominal, two chest and two head CT, where the study of CT scout view allowed diagnoses to be made that were not readily apparent from the axial slices.

The impact of reflex analgesia via transcutaneous electrical neurostimulation and electrical acupuncture was studied in 46 patients with an abnormal preliminary period by using tests of pain sensations and personal and reactive anxiety, ECG, hysterography, and computer-aided prediction of labor complications. Reflex analgesia was found to contribute to effective abolishment of preliminary pain sensations, to normalization of central nervous system function, autonomic reactions, uterine contractility, to reduction in pharmacological agent use and treatment duration, and to better delivery.

A case of trichinosis involving the cental nervous system is presented. The neurological symptoms developed 20 days after ingestion of the larvae and 3 days after the onset of facial oedema. They consisted of behavioural disorders, tetraparesis, incontinence and oculomotor paralysis. All symptoms progressively regressed. Computed tomography showed transient low-density areas in the white matter. The main manifestations and the physiopathological mechanisms (transport of the parasite through the bloodstream, immuno-allergic reaction) of cerebral trichinosis are discussed.
