A Thermopile Sensor Revealed That the Average Peripheral Wrist Skin Temperature of Patients with Major Depressive Disorder at 09:00 Is 2.9 °C Lower than That of Healthy People.

Many patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) feel worse in the morning than in the evening. To clarify the differences in morning physiological characteristics between patients with MDD and healthy participants, a wearable device that measures peripheral wrist skin temperature and heart rate (HR) was adopted. The device incorporates a thermopile sensor to measure peripheral wrist skin temperature using infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface. In total, 30 patients diagnosed with MDD and 24 healthy individuals were recruited. From 00:00 to 12:00, participants wore a wrist-worn de…

Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Targeting Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex and Orbitofrontal Cortex on Somatic Symptoms in Patients With Major Depressive Disorder: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Controlled Clinical Trial.

AIM: There is a lack of research on transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the treatment of somatic symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD) and the suitable stimulating brain region. We investigated the efficacy of tDCS targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) versus orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) on depressive somatic symptoms and somatic anxiety in patients with MDD and aimed to identify the appropriate stimulating brain regions. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled study, a total of 70 patients diagnosed with MDD were randomly allocated into DL…

Comparative efficacy of multiple non-invasive brain stimulation to treat major depressive disorder in older patients: A systematic review and network meta-analysis study based on randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is prevalent among older patients and is frequently associated with cognitive decline and a reduced quality of life. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques show promise for treating MDD, but their comparative efficacy and safety older populations remain unclear. This study aimed to compare the efficacy and cognitive effects of various NIBS techniques in treating MDD in older patients. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science core databases from inception to March 2024. Seventeen randomized controlled tr…

Clinical characteristics and potential association to Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies in patients with major depressive disorder who received maintenance electroconvulsive therapy: a retrospective chart review study.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining remission after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is clinically relevant in patients with depression, and maintenance ECT has been introduced in patients who fail to maintain remission after ECT. However, the clinical characteristics and biological background of patients who receive maintenance ECT are poorly understood. Thus, this study aimed to examine the clinical background of patients who underwent maintenance ECT. METHODS: Patients with major depressive disorder who underwent ECT followed by maintenance ECT (mECT group) and those who did not (acute ECT [aECT] group…

Antidepressant and Anxiolytic-Like Effects of the Stem Bark Extract of Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance and Its Components in a Mouse Model of Depressive-Like Disorder Induced by Reserpine Administration.

There is an urgent need to find antidepressants that can be administered for long periods without inducing severe side effects to replace conventional antidepressants that control monoamine levels, such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). We sought to determine the antidepressant effects of Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance (F. rhynchophylla Hance, FX) and its components on a reserpine-induced mouse model. One hour after oral administration of FX (30, 50, and 100 mg/kg), esculin (50 mg/kg), esculetin (50 mg/k

The efficacy and safety of sulforaphane as an adjuvant in the treatment of bipolar depressive disorder: Study protocol for a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and disabling psychiatric disorder. The treatment of BD still remains a significant clinical challenge due to the complex nature of the disease. Nutraceutical therapy as adjunctive role is a promising therapy for BD. Sulforaphane (SFN), a broccoli extract, was reported to be effective for emotional problems and cognitive impairment. However, clinical research of SFN in the treatment of BD was rare. Therefore, this study is designed to evaluate the adjuvant role of SFN in the treatment of BD. METHODS: This is a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-

N-acetylcysteine as add-on to antidepressant medication in therapy refractory major depressive disorder patients with increased inflammatory activity: study protocol of a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: A subgroup of depressed patients with increased inflammatory activity was shown to be more susceptible to develop Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD). Earlier studies with anti-inflammatory drugs have shown benefits in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), but the effects are expected to be higher in patients with increased inflammatory activity. Supplementation of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) to ongoing antidepressant therapy may positively influence outcome of depression treatment in these patients. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the efficacy of NAC supplementat…

Functional alterations of fronto-limbic circuit and default mode network systems in first-episode, drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder: A meta-analysis of resting-state fMRI data.

BACKGROUND: The neurobiological mechanisms of depression are increasingly being explored through resting-state brain imaging studies. However, resting-state fMRI findings have varied, perhaps because of differences between study populations, which included the disorder course and medication use. The aim of our study was to integrate studies of resting-state fMRI and explore the alterations of abnormal brain activity in first-episode, drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder. METHODS: Relevant imaging reports in English were searched, retrieved, selected and subjected to analysis by …

Engineering a chitosan-based nanoemulsion for non-invasive CNS-targeting approach: dual neuroprotection against epileptic and depressive disorders.

The frequent comorbidity of epilepsy and depression presents a major therapeutic challenge, with current therapies limited by systemic side effects and poor blood-brain barrier penetration. This study aimed to develop a non-invasive, dual-therapy topical nanoemulsion for combined (additive), rather than formally demonstrated synergistic, neuroprotection. A Quality-by-Design optimized chitosan-lipid nanoemulsion co-encapsulating ashwagandha extract and citicoline was engineered. The formulation exhibited favorable characteristics: nanoscale size (~ 145 nm), positive zeta potential (+ 35.9 mV),
