Evidence of P2Y-purinoceptor mediated bladder neck smooth muscle post-contractile relaxation in the male mini-pig.

The functional role of non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) nerves in the autonomic control of the male mini-pig bladder neck was investigated in the present study. Electrical stimulation of muscle strips from male mini-pig bladder neck showed biphasic response with initial phasic contraction followed by post-contractile relaxation. Electrical stimulation in the presence of four autonomic blockers (atropine 10(-6) M, propanolol 10(-6) M, phentolamine 10(-6) M) showed suppression of 68 +/- 15% of the contractile response (P < 0.05, n = 8) but no significant change in the relaxation response. Neuromodulation in NORSE/FIRES.

Neuromodulation is emerging as a promising adjunctive strategy for the management of new-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) and febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES), conditions characterized by high morbidity, frequent treatment resistance, and a substantial risk of chronic epilepsy. This chapter presents a systematic review of reported neuromodulation interventions in NORSE/FIRES, including vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), responsive neurostimulation (RNS), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rT

Nanogrooved Elastomeric Diaphragm Arrays for Assessment of Cardiomyocytes under Synergistic Effects of Circular Mechanical Stimuli and Electrical Conductivity to Enhance Intercellular Communication.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality, necessitating advancements in in vitro cardiac tissue engineering platforms for improved disease modeling, drug screening, and regenerative therapies. The chief challenge to recapitulating the beating behavior of cardiomyocytes is creation of the circular stress profile experienced by hollow organs in the natural heart due to filling pressure and integrated strategies for intercellular communication to promote cell-to-cell connections. We present a platform featuring addressable arrays of nanogrooved polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dia

Assessment of TENS-Evoked Tactile Sensations for Transradial Amputees via EEG Investigation.

Most of current prostheses can offer motor function restoration for limb amputees but usually lack natural and intuitive sensory feedback. Many studies have demonstrated that Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is promising in non-invasive sensation evoking for amputees. However, the objective evaluation and mechanism analysis on sensation feedback are still limited. This work utilized multi-channel TENS with diverse stimulus patterns to evoke sensations on four non-disabled subjects and two transradial amputees. Meanwhile, electroencephalogram (EEG) was collected to objectively

Visualization of the electrical activity of the cauda equina using a magnetospinography system in healthy subjects.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a method to measure cauda equina action fields (CEAFs) and visualize the electrical activities of the cauda equina in a broadly aged group of healthy adults. METHODS: Using a 124-channel magnetospinography (MSG) system with superconducting interference devices, the CEAFs of 43 healthy volunteers (22-64 years of age) were measured after stimulation of the peroneal nerve at the knee. Reconstructed currents were obtained from the CEAFs and superimposed on the X-ray image. Conduction velocities were also calculated from the waveform of the reconstructed currents. RESULTS:

Brain alterations with deep brain stimulation: New insight from a neuropathological case series.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on human brain tissue alterations caused by deep brain stimulation described glial and reactive inflammatory changes. In the current pathoanatomical study, we extended the analysis to signs of axonal changes and the influence of concomitant disease. METHODS: Brains of 10 patients with Parkinson's disease or essential tremor and a total of 18 electrodes were systematically examined up to 7.5 y after surgery. RESULTS: In general, tissue that had long-term contact with the electrode material exhibited astrogliosis in all, T-lymphocytes in 93%, and multinucleated gia

Ischaemia-induced injury in glycogen-depleted skeletal muscle. Selective vulnerability of FG-fibres.

The effect of preischaemic glycogen-depletion on the development of skeletal muscle injury was investigated in rats subjected to tourniquet hind-limb ischaemia. Glycogen depletion was performed by direct electrical stimulation of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle during ischaemic conditions. The metabolite load during the subsequent 2.5 h of ischaemia was modified by allowing, or not allowing, a short reperfusion period after termination of the electrical stimulation. The extent of injury was evaluated morphologically after 5 or 15 h of reperfusion, by the combination of an intravital

Use of anal sphincter electromyography during operations on the conus medullaris and sacral nerve roots.

The mechanical activity of the anal sphincter can be translated into electrical activity and recorded on graph paper or an oscilloscope. The activity of the anal sphincter may be extrapolated to activity of the external urethral sphincter because both are striated muscles innervated by the pudendal nerve that arises from S-2, S-3, and S-4. Stimulation of these nerves causes contraction of the sphincter muscles, and a deflection of the recording device occurs. This technique was employed intraoperatively in monitoring operations on the conus medullaris and sacral nerve roots in 10 patients with

Motor responses of the urinary bladder and skeletal muscle in botulinum intoxicated rats.

1. Type A or type D botulinum toxin administered to rats did not produce a generalized paralysis of skeletal muscles at the time of ventilatory arrest. However, if survival was extended by artificial ventilation complete blockade of neuromuscular transmission developed 6.5 hr after 100 MLD of type D and 5 hr after 1000 MLD of type A toxin. The onset of paralysis of a muscle was shortened by repetitive stimulation of the motor nerves.2. There was no consistent blockade of parasympathetically innervated viscera in animals dying after type A toxin. Animals given type D toxin displayed mydriasis a

Expiratory-gated Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS) does not Further Augment Heart Rate Variability During Slow Breathing at 0.1 Hz.

As cardiac vagal control is a hallmark of good health and self-regulatory capacity, researchers are seeking ways to increase vagally mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV) in an accessible and non-invasive way. Findings with transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) have been disappointing in this respect, as its effects on vmHRV are inconsistent at best. It has been speculated that combining taVNS with other established ways to increase vmHRV may produce synergistic effects. To test this idea, the present study combined taVNS with slow breathing in a cross-over design. A total

Phasic, Event-Related Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation Modifies Behavioral, Pupillary, and Low-Frequency Oscillatory Power Responses.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) has been proposed to activate the locus ceruleus-noradrenaline (LC-NA) system. However, previous studies failed to find consistent modulatory effects of taVNS on LC-NA biomarkers. Previous studies suggest that phasic taVNS may be capable of modulating LC-NA biomarkers such as pupil dilation and alpha oscillations. However, it is unclear whether these effects extend beyond pure sensory vagal nerve responses. Critically, the potential of the pupillary light reflex as an additional taVNS biomarker has not been explored so far. Here, we appl

Mapping the modulating effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on voxel-based analyses in patients with first-episode major depressive disorder: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

INTRODUCTION: Seed-based analysis has shown that transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) can modulate the dysfunctional brain network in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the voxel-based neuropsychological mechanism of taVNS on patients with first-episode MDD is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of an 8-week course of taVNS on patients with first-episode MDD. METHODS: Twenty-two patients with first-episode MDD accepted an 8-week course of taVNS treatment. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI)

Role of peripheral nerve stimulation in treating chronic neuropathic pain: an international focused survey of pain medicine experts.

Interventional pain management (IPM) options for refractory neuropathic pain (NP) have recently increased with availability of peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) equipment and expertise. Given a lack of high-quality evidence and guidelines on this topic, we sought to understand the perception of physicians with expertise in treating NP regarding IPM and the role of PNS. We emailed a survey in March 2022 to international NP experts including pain medicine physicians, researchers, and leaders of 11 professional pain societies. No representatives from vendors of PNS systems were included in the d

Localisation and stimulation of the parietal eye field.

Localisation of the human parietal eye fields (PEF) has not been as well studied as the human frontal eye fields (FEF). Stimulation studies in rhesus monkeys have suggested the localisation of the PEF to be within the intraparietal sulcus. Functional MRI studies have demonstrated this region to be highly active and potentially connected in saccadic and gaze shifting tasks. Here, we present a case of a patient with left versive seizures evaluated with SEEG, in whom electrical stimulation within the right intraparietal sulcus resulted in horizontal and downward conjugate eye movements contralate

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation in epilepsy patients enhances cooperative behavior in the prisoner's dilemma task.

The vagus nerve constitutes a key link between the autonomic and the central nervous system. Previous studies provide evidence for the impact of vagal activity on distinct cognitive processes including functions related to social cognition. Recent studies in animals and humans show that vagus nerve stimulation is associated with enhanced reward-seeking and dopamine-release in the brain. Social interaction recruits similar brain circuits to reward processing. We hypothesize that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) boosts rewarding aspects of social behavior and compare the impact of transcutaneous VN

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Pediatric Patients: A Systematic Review of Clinical Treatment Protocols and Stimulation Parameters.

BACKGROUND: Noninvasive transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) has promising therapeutic potential in a wide range of applications across somatic and psychiatric conditions. Compared with invasive vagus nerve stimulation, good safety and tolerability profiles also support the use of tVNS in pediatric patients. Potential neurodevelopment-specific needs, however, raise concerns regarding the age-appropriate adjustment of treatment protocols and applied stimulation parameters. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to review registered trials and published studies to synthesize existing tVNS

Understanding Mental Health Needs and Gathering Feedback on Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation as a Potential PTSD Treatment among 9/11 Responders Living with PTSD Symptoms 20 Years Later: A Qualitative Approach.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) remains one of the most prevalent diagnoses of World Trade Center (WTC) 9/11 responders. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a potential treatment for PTSD, as it can downregulate activity in the brain, which is known to be related to stress responses and hyperarousal. To understand barriers and facilitators to engagement in mental health care and the feasibility and acceptability of using the taVNS device as a treatment for PTSD symptoms, a focus group was conducted among patients from the Queens WTC Health Program who had elevated

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) given for poor feeding in at-risk infants also improves their motor abilities.

PURPOSE: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that may improve oromotor skills when paired with feeding in at-risk infants, but effects on other motor function and how motor function relates to white matter (WM) microstructure are unknown. METHODS: In this prospective study, infants failing oral feeds and slated for gastrostomy tube (G-tube) placement received taVNS paired with bottle feeding daily for 2-3 weeks. The effects of taVNS-paired feeding on general and specific head movements were investigated using the Specific Test o
