Structural abnormalities in nucleus accumbens in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although the pathogenesis of panic attacks has been well studied in patients with panic disorder (PD), the neurobiological basis of the long-term fear memories and avoidance behavior that are often observed in PD have not been well investigated. Recent animal studies have suggested that nucleus accumbens (NAcc) plays an important role in neurobiological basis of long-term fear memories and avoidance behavior. METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with PD and 38 matched healthy control subjects (HC) participated in this study. Differences in relative volumes and shape deformations of NAcc…

Women With Borderline Personality Disorder Show Reduced Identification of Emotional Facial Expressions and a Heightened Negativity Bias.

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) frequently display impairments in the identification of emotional facial expressions … faces concurrent with a bias to misclassify faces as angry, and a faster preconscious vigilance for fearful relative to happy facial expressions. Increased severity of borderline symptoms and global psychopathology in BPD patients were associated with reduced ability to identify angry facial expressions and a stronger negativity bias to anger. The find …

Periaqueductal Gray Sheds Light on Dark Areas of Psychopathology.

Neurons in the periaqueductal gray (PAG) integrate negative emotions with the autonomic, neuroendocrine, and immune systems to facilitate responses to threat. Modern functional track tracing in animals and optogenetic and chemogenetic techniques show that the PAG is a rich substrate for the integration of active and passive responses to threat. In humans, the same regions of the PAG that give rise to adaptive anger/fight, fear/panic, depression/shutdown, pain, and predatory behaviors in response to challenging situations or overwhelming threats can become activated pathologically, resulting in…

Physical exercise for people with hereditable thoracic aortic disease. A study of patient perspectives.

PURPOSE: To improve the knowledge about physical exercise in patients with Hereditable Thoracic Aortic Disease, insight to the patient persp … y. Inconsistent professional advice, non-engaging activities, unpredictable health conditions and a fear of exercising were factors that may contribute to inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS: The complexity and existential internal conflict related to physical exercise seemed to be a huge dilemma among persons with Hereditable Thoracic A …

Effects of stress on the auditory system: an approach to study a common origin for mood disorders and dementia.

The concept of stress is a fundamental piece to understand how organisms can adapt to the demands produced by a continuously changing enviro … of sounds. A consequence of these alterations could be the increase in the persistence of auditory fear memory, which could increase the development of mood disorders. Finally, it is important to emphasize that stress is an evolutionary issue that is necessary to understand the mental health of humans in these modern times. This article is a contribut …

Exercise for stroke prevention.

We review evidence concerning exercise for stroke prevention. Plausible biological reasons suggest that exercise would be important in preve … ude logistical barriers, medical comorbidities, stroke-related deficits, negative exercise beliefs, fear of falling, poststroke fatigue, arthropathy/pain and depression. Definitive research is needed to specify efficacious behavioural approaches to increase poststroke exercise. Effective techniques probably include physician endorsement of exercise pro …

A Review of Scales to Measure Social Anxiety Disorder in Clinical and Epidemiological Studies.

To advance research into social anxiety disorder (SAD) and provide efficacious treatments for individuals with SAD, researchers and clinicians must have effective assessment instruments for identifying the disorder in terms of its diagnostic criteria, symptoms, and the presence of specific maintaining factors. This review highlights the main lines of existing adult and youth research on scales that form part of diagnostic instruments that assess SAD, scales that measure social anxiety symptoms, and scales that measure theory-based psychological maintaining factors associated with SAD. The revi

Anxiety in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

Although anxiety is a normal and developmentally appropriate experience of childhood and anxiety disorders are among the most commonly diagnosed disorders, the prevalence of anxiety symptomatology and anxiety disorders in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is not well documented. Most studies have focused on anxiety-related syndromes associated with T1D including fear of hypoglycemia, specific phobia of needles (i.e., needle anxiety), and anxiety related to uptake of new and sophisticated diabetes technology (e.g., continuous glucose monitors, continuous subcutaneous infusion therapy), but th…

A contemporary learning theory perspective on the etiology of anxiety disorders: it's not what you thought it was.

The authors describe how contemporary learning theory and research provide the basis for perspectives on the etiology and maintenance of anxiety disorders that capture the complexity associated with individual differences in the development and course of these disorders. These insights from modern research on learning overcome the shortcomings of earlier overly simplistic behavioral approaches, which sometimes have been justifiably criticized. The authors show how considerations of early learning histories and temperamental vulnerabilities affect the short- and long-term outcomes of experience

Blood-injury phobia: a review.

Natural human uneasiness about blood, injury, or deformity sometimes becomes a specific phobia, which can lead to serious disability if vital medical procedures are refused. Blood-injury phobia usually starts in childhood and is often familial. Unlike other phobic cues, which cause persistent tachycardia, blood-injury phobic cues evoke an initial rise in heart rate followed by vasovagal bradycardia and, frequently, syncope. Although blood-injury phobia may have an evolutionary, genetic, and physiological basis, it can be treated effectively by exposure. The tendency to faint early in exposure

Benzodiazepines in panic disorder and agoraphobia.

Benzodiazepines, particularly alprazolam, are quickly becoming the drugs of first choice in the treatment of many cases of panic and agoraphobia. The reason for this choice is that these drugs are safer to use, quicker in onset of action, easier for the physician to prescribe and more pleasant for the patient to take than the alternatives. Although the treatment of panic disorder and agoraphobia has been best studied with the benzodiazepine alprazolam, it now appears likely that other benzodiazepines, for example diazepam, lorazepam and chlorazepam, may also be effective when correctly used.
