Western diet consumption by host vertebrate promotes altered gene expression on Aedes aegypti reducing its lifespan and increasing fertility following blood feeding.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in low- and middle-income countries is linked to an increase in Western diet consumption, characterized by a high intake of processed foods, which impacts the levels of blood sugar and lipids, hormones, and cytokines. Hematophagous insect vectors, such as the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, rely on blood meals for reproduction and development and are therefore exposed to the components of blood plasma. However, the impact of the alteration of blood composition due to malnutrition and metabolic conditions on mosquito biology remains und

Beta-glucans induce cellular immune training and changes in intestinal morphology in poultry.

INTRODUCTION: Beta-glucans are known as biological response modifiers due to their ability to activate the immune system. This research aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of feeding beta-glucans from various sources on the immune status and intestinal morphology of chickens. METHODS: To this end we used in vitro and in vivo set-ups. In the in vitro set-up the chicken macrophage cell line HD-11 was used to measure the response of the chicken immune cells to beta-glucans extracted from algae and mushrooms on immune-related gene expression and associated activities. Additionally, we cond

Characterisation and mobilisation of IncA/C plasmid-mediated antibiotic resistance in Edwardsiella ictaluri.

OBJECTIVES: Edwardsiella ictaluri is an important pathogen in farmed raised catfish. Recently, we showed that resistance to tetracycline and florfenicol in the E. ictaluri MS-17-156 strain isolated from channel catfish was facilitated by acquisition of a 135 kb plasmid (named pEIMS-171561). METHODS: We described the genetic structure of pEIMS-171561. Plasmid copy number and stability within E. ictaluri strain MS-17-156 was determined. We also investigated the in vitro and in vivo transferability of pEIMS-171561 using catfish as a model for in vivo transfer. RESULTS: pEIMS-171561 belonged to

Serotonin 5-HT1B receptors mediate the antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects of ventromedial prefrontal cortex deep brain stimulation in a mouse model of social defeat.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) delivered to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) induces antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like responses in various animal models. Electrophysiology and neurochemical studies suggest that these effects may be dependent, at least in part, on the serotonergic system. In rodents, vmPFC DBS reduces raphe cell firing and increases serotonin (5-HT) release and the expression of serotonergic receptors in different brain regions. METHODS: We examined whether the behavioural responses of chronic vmPFC DBS are mediated by 5-HT1A or 5-HT1B receptors through

Association of timing of congenital diaphragmatic hernia repair with survival and morbidity for patients not requiring extra-corporeal life support.

BACKGROUND: While physiologic stabilization followed by repair has become the accepted paradigm for management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), few studies have examined the effect of incremental changes in operative timing on patient outcomes. We hypothesized that later repair would be associated with higher morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Data were queried from the CDH Study Group (CDHSG) from 2007-2020. Patients with chromosomal or cardiac abnormalities and those who were never repaired or required pre-repair extra-corporeal life support (ECLS) were excluded. Time to repair was

Agrochemical contaminants in six species of edible insects from Uganda and Kenya.

Edible insects are currently promoted worldwide as an alternative animal protein source, but they are mostly still harvested from the wild where they are predisposed to contamination with agrochemicals. This study analysed six species of edible insects (Ruspolia differens, Rhynchophorus phoenicis, Schistocerca gregaria, Oryctes sp, Pachnoda ephippiata and Acanthoplus sp) collected from different habitats and/or reared in the laboratory in Kenya and Uganda for safety from agrochemical contaminants using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The residue levels were statistically compar

Metabolic benefits of novel histamine H3 receptor ligands in the model of excessive eating: The importance of intrinsic activity and pharmacokinetic properties.

AIMS: One of the therapeutic approaches in the treatment of obesity is the use of histamine H3 receptor ligands. Histamine plays a significant role in eating behavior because it causes a loss of appetite and is considered to be a satiety signal released during food intake. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Histamine ligands were selected based on the preliminary studies which included determination of intrinsic activity and selected pharmacokinetic parameters. Female Wistar rats were fed palatable feed for 28 days and simultaneously the tested compounds were administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 10

Developmental 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin exposure of either parent enhances the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis in neonatal mice.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a rare, but potentially fatal intestinal inflammatory condition most often arising in premature infants. Infants provided formula are also at greater risk of developing this disease. Although the majority of formula-fed, preterm infants do not develop NEC, up to 30% of infants with the disease do not survive. Thus, identifying additional, currently unrecognized factors, which may predispose a specific infant to NEC development would be a significant clinical advancement. In this regard, we have previously reported that offspring of female or male
