Radial Mandibular Coronoidectomy in a Basset Hound as a Treatment for Temporomandibular Joint Dysplasia.

A -year-old Basset Hound, previously diagnosed with temporomandibular joint dysplasia, presented with a 6-month history of pain during mastication and frequent open-mouth locking episodes. Oral examination under sedation revealed displacement of the mandible to the left and jaw fixation in an open position. Computed tomography images of the head performed in open and closed positions before and after surgery were obtained. A left partial coronoidectomy was performed using a radial TPLO saw blade, removing bone impingement between the coronoid process and zygomatic arch. The dog was eating soft

Pneumatic Soft Actuator Capable of Visuo-tactile Sensing toward an In Vitro Tongue Simulator.

The deformation of the food bolus by the human tongue represents a manipulation process in which deformable objects are brought to a desired state by sensing their shape and adjusting tongue movements accordingly. This study introduces a soft actuator equipped with a visuo-tactile sensor that enables both surface shape sensing and actuation toward an in vitro tongue simulator to elucidate the mechanism of this manipulation. The proposed soft actuator employs a mechanism in which a deformable object is pressed against the palate by a pneumatically inflated balloon to form it. Shape sensing is a

A Review of Recent Progress in Synthetic Polymer Surface Coatings for the Prevention of Biofilm Formation.

Bacterial adhesion and the subsequent formation of biofilms and biofouling have significant economic and health impacts across all sectors. They are especially impactful in industrial corrosion, healthcare, food processing, agriculture, and waste and drinking water. Synthetic polymers that resist bacterial adhesion are adaptable to a wide range of applications in all of these fields. While there are many bacteria-resistant polymers, some of the best performing include polyethylene glycol (PEG), poly(oxazoline) (POZ), and zwitterionic polymers, with zwitterionic polymers showing the most promis

Biochemical and medical aspects of vitamin B1 research.

Vitamin B1 is an indispensable food factor for the human and animal body. In animals, vitamin B1 is found in the form of thiamine and its phosphate esters - thiamine mono-, di- and triphosphate, as well as an adenylated derivative - adenosine thiamine triphosphate. At present, the only vitamin B1 form with biochemical functions being elucidated is thiamine diphosphate, which serves as a coenzyme for several important enzymes involved in carbohydrate, amino acid, fatty acid and energy metabolism. Here we review the latest developments in the field of vitamin B1 research in animals. Transport, m

Food for Thought: Optical Sensor Arrays and Machine Learning for the Food and Beverage Industry.

Arrays of cross-reactive sensors, combined with statistical or machine learning analysis of their multivariate outputs, have enabled the holistic analysis of complex samples in biomedicine, environmental science, and consumer products. Comparisons are frequently made to the mammalian nose or tongue and this perspective examines the role of sensing arrays in analyzing food and beverages for quality, veracity, and safety. I focus on optical sensor arrays as low-cost, easy-to-measure tools for use in the field, on the factory floor, or even by the consumer. Novel materials and approaches are high

Sialic acid metabolism of oral bacteria and its potential role in colorectal cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

Sialic acid metabolism in oral bacteria is a complex process involving nutrient acquisition, immune evasion, cell surface modification, and the production of metabolites that contribute to bacterial persistence and virulence in the oral cavity. In addition to causing various periodontal diseases, certain oral pathogenic bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum, can induce inflammatory reactions and influence the immunity of host cells. These associations with host cells are linked to various diseases, particularly colorectal cancer and Alzhe

Advancing detection of fungal and mycotoxins contamination in grains and oilseeds: Hyperspectral imaging for enhanced food safety.

Grains and oilseeds, including maize, wheat, and peanuts, are essential for human and animal nutrition but are vulnerable to contamination by fungi and their toxic metabolites, mycotoxins. This review provides a comprehensive investigation of the applications of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technologies for the detection of fungal and mycotoxins contamination in grains and oilseeds. It explores the capability of HSI to identify specific spectral features of contamination and emphasized the critical role of sample properties and sample preparation techniques in HSI applications. Additionally, it

Microbiota-Liver Diseases Interactions.

Gut microbiota regulates essential processes of host metabolism and physiology: synthesis of vitamins, digestion of foods non-digestible by the host (such as fibers), and-most important-protects the digestive tract from pathogens. In this study, we focus on the CRISPR/Cas9 technology, which is extensively used to correct multiple diseases, including liver diseases. Then, we discuss the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), affecting more than 25% of the global population; colorectal cancer (CRC) is second in mortality. We give space to rarely discussed topics, such as pathobionts and mult

Dietary Strategies for Relieving Stress in Pet Dogs and Cats.

A variety of physical, emotional, and mental factors can induce a stress response in pet dogs and cats. During this process, hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) and sympathetic-adrenal medulla (SAM) axes are activated to produce a series of adaptive short-term reactions to the aversive situations. Meanwhile, oxidative stress is induced where there is an imbalance between the production and scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Oxidative damage is also incorporated in sustained stress response causing a series of chronic problems, such as cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases, im

Epinephrine Administered in Anaphylaxis: The Evolution of 0.3 mg Dosage.

BACKGROUND: Despite epinephrine's historical use for over a century and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for EpiPen's use in 1987 to treat anaphylaxis, little information exists regarding selection of the 0.3 mg adult dose. A review of literature was conducted to provide a historical retrospective regarding the evolution of the dosage selected for today's EpiPen. The first adrenal gland extract, isolation of the epinephrine active ingredient, observation of physiological effect, selection of the intramuscular route for administration, the dosage range recommended by independent phys

Pathogenesis and treatment of depression: Role of diet in prevention and therapy.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in depression, which is related to, among other things, the COVID-19 pandemic. Depression can be fatal if not treated or if treated inappropriately. Depression is the leading cause of suicide attempts. The disease is multifactorial, and pharmacotherapy often fails to bring satisfactory results. Therefore, increasingly more importance is attached to the natural healing substances and nutrients in food, which can significantly affect the therapy process and prevention of depressive disorders. A proper diet is vital to preventing depression a

Electrochemical and Optical Sensors for the Detection of Chemical Carcinogens Causing Leukemia.

The incidence and mortality due to neoplastic diseases have shown an increasing tendency over the years. Based on GLOBOCAN 2020 published by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), leukemias are the thirteenth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world, with 78.6% of leukemia cases diagnosed in countries with a very high or high Human Development Index (HDI). Carcinogenesis is a complex process initiated by a mutation in DNA that may be caused by chemical carcinogens present in polluted environments and human diet. The IARC has identified 122 human carcinogens, e.g., benzene,

Scurvy and food selectivity in childhood: a case report.

Despite its rarity, symptomatic micronutrient deficiency remains a public health problem. Scurvy is the differential diagnosis for bleeding disorders and hematological and rheumatological diseases, especially in patients with eating disorders. However, it is unrelated to autism spectrum disorders or other neurodevelopmental disorders. A previously healthy 10-year-old boy living in São Paulo, Brazil, had a history of significant food selectivity unrelated to autism spectrum disorder, resulting in symptomatic ascorbic acid deficiency (scurvy). This resulted in pain and purpuric lesions on the lo

Modification of Deoxynivalenol by a Fungal Laccase Paired with Redox Mediator TEMPO.

Mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol introduce a health risk to the food supply and are costly to manage or avoid. Technologies for reducing or eliminating the toxicity of deoxynivalenol could be useful in a variety of processes, such as in preserving the value as animal feed of byproducts of ethanol production. We characterized transformation products of deoxynivalenol that were formed by the combination of a fungal laccase paired with the chemical mediator 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO), using chromatography, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Extracellular vesicles derived from Trichinella Spiralis larvae promote the polarization of macrophages to M2b type and inhibit the activation of fibroblasts.

Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a globally distributed food-borne parasite that can coexist with the host for a long time after infection. Trichinella-derived secretions can regulate the immune response and fibroblasts of the host, but the specific mechanisms involved are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of T. spiralis larvae-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their key miRNAs in the process of T. spiralis-host interaction. In this study, we found that the EVs of T. spiralis larvae, as well as miR-1-3p and let-7-5p, expressed in T. spiralis larva

Transcriptional Response to a Dauer-Inducing Ascaroside Cocktail in Late L1 in C. elegans.

The dauer diapause stage in C. elegans is a non-feeding alternative to the L3 larval stage that is highly resistant to harsh environmental conditions. The decision to enter dauer is a two-step process. First, L1 larvae encounter adverse conditions such as lack of food or overcrowding and decide to enter the L2d rather than the L2 stage. Second, L2d worms that continue to experience disadvantageous conditions decide to enter dauer instead of L3. Here, we have used RNA-seq to characterize the transcriptional response to a cocktail of dauer-inducing ascaroside pheromones at the late L1 stage as w

Vaso-occlusive crisis in sickle cell disease: a vicious cycle of secondary events.

Painful vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) remains the most common reason for presenting to the Emergency Department and hospitalization in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Although two new agents have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating SCD, they both target to reduce the frequency of VOC. Results from studies investigating various approaches to treat and shorten VOC have so far been generally disappointing. In this paper, we will summarize the complex pathophysiology and downstream events of VOC and discuss the likely reasons for the disappointing results using mo

Bioactive Peptide Tempe Made from Mucuna pruriens (L) DC as an Inhibitor of Angiotensin-I-Converting Enzyme (ACE) in a Digestion Simulation.

Mucuna pruriens (L) DC tempe is a food that functions as an inhibitor of the angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE). The purpose of this research was to study the activity of M. pruriens tempe peptides during the digestive process in vitro with pepsin-pancreatin, and absorption of peptides in the small intestine using the inverted intestinal sac method. Our results show that M. pruriens had the highest ACE-inhibiting activity after digestion in vitro after fermentation for 72 h (F72). F72 peptide absorption (%) and ACE-inhibitory activity of the absorbed peptides did not significantly differ be

Duodenal bile acids as determinants of intestinal mucosal homeostasis and disease.

The duodenal epithelium plays a pivotal role in the uptake and transport of dietary nutrients while simultaneously acting as physical and biochemical barrier to protect against harmful bacteria and antigens. In the case of functional dyspepsia (FD), the duodenum is of particular interest, due to observed local immune involvement and the proximity to the stomach and exposure to acidopeptic secretions. Recent observations in FD pathophysiology, including those reported by Beeckmans et al in this issue of the journal, have identified a loss of barrier function in the duodenal epithelium, an alter

A Study of the Participation of NMDA Glutamate Receptors in the Mechanisms of Specific Anterograde Amnesia Reversion.

We studied the involvement of NMDA glutamate receptors in the mechanisms of anterograde amnesia. It was found that repeated training of amnestic animals treated with D-cycloserine, a potent agonist of the glycine site of NMDA receptors, did not lead to consolidation of long-term memory, while expression of short-term memory was more pronounced in comparison with control animals that received saline before repeated training. It was shown that D-cycloserine in amnestic snails did not affect the food reactions caused by the presentation of a conditioned stimulus during the reminder (without combi
