The views and experiences of nurses and midwives in the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Global progress towards HIV prevention and care is contingent upon increasing the number of those aware of their status through HIV testing. Provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling is recommended globally as a strategy to enhance uptake of HIV testing and is primarily conducted by nurses and midwives. Research shows that provider-initiated HIV testing and counseling implementation is sub-optimal. The reasons for this are unclear. OBJECTIVES: The review aimed to explore nurses' and midwives' views and experiences of the provision and management of provider-initiated HIV testi

Phenotypic profile of pulmonary aspergillosis and associated cellular immunity among people living with human immunodeficiency virus in Maiduguri, Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: Aspergillus causes many forms of pulmonary infectious diseases ranging from colonization (noninvasive) to invasive aspergillosis. This largely depends on the underlying host's lung health and immune status. Pulmonary aspergillosis (PA), especially the invasive form, occurs as opportunistic to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as a result of cluster of differentiation (CD)4+ lymphopenia. The majority of patients with comorbid HIV and aspergillosis go undiagnosed. This study aimed to isolate, identify the etiologies, and determine the prevalence of PA among HIV-infected persons with

Longitudinal data resource from the Wellbeing of Older People cohort of people aged >50 years in Uganda and South Africa from 2009 to 2019.

BACKGROUND: The population of people aged ≥60 years continues to increase globally, and has been projected by the United Nations Population Division to increase to 21% of the total population by 2050. In addition, the number of older people living with HIV has continued to increase owing to the introduction of antiretroviral therapy as a treatment for HIV-infected people. Most of the older people living with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa, an area that faces the biggest burden of HIV globally. Despite the high burden, there are limited reliable data on how HIV directly and indirectly affects th

The association between lack of male circumcision and risk for HIV infection: a review of the epidemiological data.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Whether male circumcision reduces the risk of acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection remains controversial. STUDY DESIGN: As there have now been a number of studies conducted that have examined this issue, we undertook to review their findings. Thirty epidemiological studies identified in the literature that investigated the association between male circumcision status and risk for HIV infection were reviewed. RESULTS: Eighteen cross-sectional studies from six countries reported a statistically significant association, four studies from four countri

Gender-Specific Combination HIV Prevention for Youth in High-Burden Settings: The MP3 Youth Observational Pilot Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Nearly three decades into the epidemic, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remains the region most heavily affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with nearly 70% of the 34 million people living with HIV globally residing in the region. In SSA, female and male youth (15 to 24 years) are at a disproportionately high risk of HIV infection compared to adults. As such, there is a need to target HIV prevention strategies to youth and to tailor them to a gender-specific context. This protocol describes the process for the multi-staged approach in the design of the MP3 Youth pilot study, a

Comparison of SARS-CoV-2 entry inhibitors based on ACE2 receptor or engineered Spike-binding peptides.

With increasing resistance of SARS-CoV-2 variants to antibodies, there is interest in developing entry inhibitors that target essential receptor-binding regions of the viral Spike protein and thereby present a high bar for viral resistance. Such inhibitors could be derivatives of the viral receptor, ACE2, or peptides engineered to interact specifically with the Spike receptor-binding pocket. We compared the efficacy of a series of both types of entry inhibitors, constructed as fusions to an antibody Fc domain. Such a design can increase protein stability and act to both neutralize free virus a

A preliminary survey on the use of ART among blood donors in Shenzhen China and its implications to blood safety.

IMPORTANCE: The recent introduction of the AIDS pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP/PEP) medication has sparked fear of the possible increase of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Treponema pallidum (TP) transfusion-transmission risk due to the potential administration of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in blood donors. However, the extent to which ART drugs are currently being utilized by blood donors in China remains to be clarified. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of ART drug use in individuals who attempted to donate blood but were eventually rejected due to anti-HIV and/

Assessment of growth hormone dynamics in human immunodeficiency virus-related lipodystrophy.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) lipodystrophy (LIPO) is characterized by increased visceral adiposity, peripheral fat atrophy, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. GH concentrations are known to vary inversely with excess weight and body fat but have not been investigated in HIV lipodystrophy. Twenty-one subjects with HIV LIPO, 20 HIV-infected nonlipodystrophy subjects (NONLIPO), and 20 control (C) subjects were prospectively recruited for this study and compared. Subjects in the three groups were all male, age-matched [median, 47 yr old (interquartile range, 37-50) LIPO; 41 (37-44) NONLIP

Human immunodeficiency virus-related lymphoma treatment with intensive combination chemotherapy. French-Italian Cooperative Group.

PURPOSE: An increased risk of high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is observed in patients who are seropositive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Treatment of such patients is complicated by their underlying acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Intensive strategies such as those used in non-HIV-related lymphoma may be poorly tolerated. However, patients without severe AIDS may derive significant benefits from such an approach. In a prospective multicenter study, treatment outcomes were assessed in 141 cases of HIV-seropositive lymphomas submitted to aggressive chemotherapy. PATIENTS

Trends in asymptomatic STI among HIV-positive MSM and lessons for systematic screening.

The burden of STIs is particularly high in HIV-infected MSM patients. A recent increase in STIs prevalence has been noticed in the US and western European countries. We aim to assess trends in asymptomatic STIs following the publication of recommendations for STIs screening, i.e. Chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (NG). Seventeen centers located in the Paris area participated in the study. All asymptomatic HIV-infected MSM patients attending a follow up consultation were proposed to participated in the study. Asymptomatic patients were included over 2 periods: period 1 from April to December 2015 an

Integrated HIV testing, prevention, and treatment intervention for key populations in India: a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: To achieve reductions in HIV incidence, we need strategies to engage key population at risk for HIV in low-income and middle-income countries. We evaluated the effectiveness of integrated care centres in India that provided single-venue HIV testing, prevention, and treatment services for people who inject drugs (PWID) and men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: We did baseline respondent-driven sampling surveys in 27 sites across India, and selected 22 of these (12 PWID and ten MSM) for a cluster randomised trial on the basis of high HIV prevalence and logistical considerations.
