Cochleovestibular findings linked to COVID-19: A scoping review for clinical care planning in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: On 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared an outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) to be a global health emergency. Research has focused on the impact and response to life-threatening symptoms of COVID-19 across the lifespan; however, there is a need to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on the cochleovestibular system, as viral infections are known to impact this system. This is particularly important for contexts where resources are limited and prioritisation of resources requires strong risk versus benefit evaluations. OBJECTIVE:

Stress- and smoke free pregnancy study protocol: a randomized controlled trial of a personalized eHealth intervention including heart rate variability-biofeedback to support pregnant women quit smoking via stress reduction.

BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking and stress during pregnancy are associated with adverse health effects for women themselves and are risk factors for adverse developmental outcomes of the unborn child. Smoking and stress seem to be intertwined in various ways. First, the majority of smoking pregnant women is of lower socio-economic status, which is associated with higher levels of perceived stress. Second, smoking women often report to smoke because they feel stressed. Third, quitting smoking often increases perceived stress levels initially. Therefore, effective interventions are needed to suppor

Post-COVID-19 assessment in a specialist clinical service: a 12-month, single-centre, prospective study in 1325 individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Post-COVID-19 complications require simultaneous characterisation and management to plan policy and health system responses. We describe the 12-month experience of the first UK dedicated post-COVID-19 clinical service to include hospitalised and non-hospitalised patients. METHODS: In a single-centre, observational analysis, we report the demographics, symptoms, comorbidities, investigations, treatments, functional recovery, specialist referral and rehabilitation of 1325 individuals assessed at the University College London Hospitals post-COVID-19 service between April 2020 and A

HELP@APP: development and evaluation of a self-help app for traumatized Syrian refugees in Germany - a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Syrians represent the largest group among refugees in Germany. Many of them were exposed to sequential traumatizing events including war, escape and post-migration stressors, which significantly increase the risk to develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress and other mental disorders. However, there is a lack of adequate treatment options for traumatized refugees in Germany. Moreover, their access to psychosocial care is often restricted due to legal regulation, language barriers, and unclear cost coverage. We therefore aim to develop a low-threshold supportive self-help app for Syr

The effect of a multidisciplinary co-management program for the older hip fracture patients in Beijing: a "pre- and post-" retrospective study.

UNLABELLED: Hip fracture becomes a major public health issue with the growing aging population. This study evaluated a multidisciplinary co-management program for older hip fracture patients and found it significantly improved the best practice indicators. It provided preliminary evidence to support the use of such intervention in hip fracture management. PURPOSE/INTRODUCTION: Hip fracture leads to high morbidity and mortality in older people. A previous study found a significant disparity in hip fracture management in Beijing Jishuitan Hospital (JSTH) compared to best practice care in the Un

Mapping diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus vaccine coverage in Africa, 2000-2016: a spatial and temporal modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Routine childhood vaccination is among the most cost-effective, successful public health interventions available. Amid substantial investments to expand vaccine delivery throughout Africa and strengthen administrative reporting systems, most countries still require robust measures of local routine vaccine coverage and changes in geographical inequalities over time. METHODS: This analysis drew from 183 surveys done between 2000 and 2016, including data from 881 268 children in 49 African countries. We used a Bayesian geostatistical model calibrated to results from the Global Burden

Exclusive breastfeeding prenatal intentions among HIV-positive mothers in Blantyre, Malawi: a correlation study.

BACKGROUND: Exclusive breastfeeding is an important component of child survival and prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in resource-poor settings like Malawi. In Malawi, children under the age of six months are exclusively breastfed for an average duration of 3.7 months. This falls short of the recommendations by the World Health Organization as well as the Malawi Ministry of Health that mothers exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of the child's life. Understanding factors that influence exclusive breastfeeding duration among HIV-positive mothers is important in promo

Fertility preservation trends, perspectives, and reflections in gender diverse adults across the life course.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the fertility preservation (FP) utilization rate among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) patients at the Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic (TISCC) within the Mayo Clinic? SUMMARY ANSWER: The rate of utilization of FP services by TGD patients at Mayo Clinic's TISCC was determined to be 6.62%. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: TGD patients encounter several barriers when pursuing FP, which may contribute to a lower utilization rate of these services. These barriers include financial constraints and lack of insurance coverage, as well as societal and healthcare prov

Interactive Internet-Based Motivational Interviewing Training for HIV Counseling Support Staff to Improve Health Communication in HIV Care Interactions: Protocol for Training Development and a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV counseling support staff (CSS) play a crucial role in HIV care outcomes, providing essential access to HIV test counseling, linkage-to-care support, adherence counseling, peer support, and navigation. Effective training in evidence-based interventions like motivational interviewing (MI) is imperative to maximize the impact of CSS in enhancing HIV care outcomes. MI is a collaborative, goal-oriented communication method aimed at bolstering an individual's motivation and movement toward specific goals by eliciting and exploring personal arguments for change. MI has demonstrated ef

Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating a Care Management Model for Patients With Neuromuscular Diseases: Protocol for a Participatory Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) are often progressive conditions that can reduce quality of life and life expectancy and require long-term caregiving. As patients age, caregivers face increasing demands, often resulting in significant caregiver burden. Treatment and care are complex, and a coordinated, family-centered approach is indicated. The current care situation for individuals with NMDs and their families in Switzerland is poorly understood, and there is no standardized NMD care management available. OBJECTIVE: The proposed study aims to assess the current care practices for i

Features of mHealth Apps for Tobacco Cessation Important to Black Adults: Discrete Choice Experiment.

BACKGROUND: Although mobile health (mHealth) apps for tobacco cessation augment traditional cessation methods and have contributed to increases in cessation rates, Black adults are underrepresented in mHealth app studies for tobacco cessation. As a result, their mHealth app preferences are not well-known. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to identify features of mHealth apps for cessation that are important to Black adults who use tobacco products. METHODS: We developed an online discrete choice experiment with 12 pairs of hypothetical mHealth apps for tobacco cessation. Inclusion criteria included be

Effect of Branched-Chain Amino Acid Supplementation Alone or Combined With Tryptophan or Methionine on Appetite Control and Related Health Outcomes in Older Adults: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are essential amino acids for protein metabolism. Preclinical research in mice suggested that BCAA intake relative to other amino acids, in the context of a high-carbohydrate diet, was associated with hyperphagia, obesity, and reduced lifespan. These effects were not attributed to BCAAs alone, nor did they manifest through canonical mechanistic target of rapamycin-insulin-like growth factor 1 pathways; rather, they resulted from indirect effects of other amino acids, notably tryptophan, on appetite. As population aging and obesity-related chronic

A preoperative package of care for osteoarthritis, consisting of weight loss, orthotics, rehabilitation, and topical and oral analgesia (OPPORTUNITY): a two-centre, open-label, randomised controlled feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis of the knee is a major cause of disability worldwide. Non-operative treatments can reduce the morbidity but adherence is poor. We hypothesised that adherence could be optimised if behavioural change was established in the preoperative period. Therefore, we aimed to assess feasibility, acceptability, and recruitment and retention rates of a preoperative package of non-operative care in patients awaiting knee replacement surgery. METHODS: We did an open-label, randomised controlled, feasibility trial in two secondary care centres in the UK. Eligible participants were

Rare Case of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Midline Dorsum of Tongue: Diagnostic and Management Dilemma.

INTRODUCTION: Deployment and retention of a sufficient number of skilled and motivated human resources for health (HRH) at the right place and at the right time are critical to ensure people's right to access a universal quality of health care. Vision Tokyo 2010 Network, an international network of HRH managers at the ministry of health (MoH) level in nine Francophone African countries, identified maldistribution of a limited number of healthcare personnel and their retention in rural areas as overarching problems in the member countries. The network conducted this study in Senegal to identify

eHealth Interventions to Address Sexual Health, Substance Use, and Mental Health Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: Systematic Review and Synthesis of Process Evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) face disproportionate risks concerning HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, substance use, and mental health. These outcomes constitute an interacting syndemic among MSM; interventions addressing all 3 together could have multiplicative effects. eHealth interventions can be accessed privately, and evidence from general populations suggests these can effectively address all 3 health outcomes. However, it is unclear how useable, accessible, or acceptable eHealth interventions are for MSM and what factors affect this. OBJECTIVE: We undertook
