OBJECTIVE: A rise in infections with multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-PA) is a significant contributor to increased morbidity and mortality of patients with hematologic malignancies. We report our experience concerning bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in adult patients affected by haematological malignancies. BAL was performed in patients with documented pulmonary diseases not responding to empirical antibiotic and antifungal therapies. Overall, 25 bronchoscopies were performed in 24 patients. We assessed late mortality in 854 individuals who had survived 2 or more years after autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for hematologic malignancies. We initiated a randomized study of amifostine (the organic thiophosphate formerly known as WR-2721) given to patients during myeloablative conditioning therapy for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation.
