Pediatric acute liver failure (PALF) is a life-threatening disorder characterized by acute hepatocellular injury occurring in children without recognized underlying liver disease. The clinicopathologic evaluation of PALF requires a different approach from that in adults. The diagnostic considerations differ depending on the age, personal and family history, geographical region, and clinical presentation. Distinct entities such as gestational alloimmune liver disease, herpes simplex virus infection, and metabolic disorders should be considered in neonates with acute liver failure, while acetami…

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) esophagitis is a relatively rare form of infectious esophagitis. Typically, patients with viral esophagitis are immunocompromised. HSV esophagitis in an immunocompetent patient is uncommonly reported. The objective of this case report is to discuss symptoms, investigations, imaging, and treatment of HSV esophagitis in a healthy adolescent male. A previously healthy 17-year-old male presented to the ED of our facility with a 5-day history of fever, odynophagia, lethargy, and 2 episodes of emesis that failed to resolve with antibiotic treatment. Investigations revealed…

Several viruses, including human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), are thought to replicate in the placenta. However, there is little understanding of … transmitted viruses in SGHPL-4 cells we found some limitation to replication of Zika virus, but not herpes simplex virus. Thus, limited replication of some, but not all, vertically transmitted viruses may be a feature of trophoblast cells.

The search for a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine has spanned nearly four decades without much success. A much needed paradigm shift can be found in the abnormally high levels of intrinsic disorder in the outer shells of HIVs, the hepatitis C virus (HCV), and herpes simplex viruses (HSVs), for which successful vaccines have not been established. On the other hand, this feature (high levels of intrinsic disorder in the outer shells) is completely absent in classic viruses for which effective vaccines are found, such as the rabies virus. The motions arising from the disordered outer sh…

Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) play key roles in the pathogenesis of different human diseases, but the cross-talk between FGFs and other c … s not restricted to keratinocytes and functionally relevant, since FGFs promoted the replication of herpes simplex virus I (HSV-1), lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, and Zika virus. Most importantly, inhibition of FGFR signaling blocked HSV-1 replication in cultured human keratinocytes and in mice. These results suggest the use of FGFR kinase inhibitors for th …

Fuchs uveitis syndrome is a chronic, typically unilateral, ocular condition characterized by an asymptomatic mild inflammatory syndrome that can result in cataract and secondary glaucoma. Diagnosis is largely clinical because the etiology remains obscure. Fuchs uveitis syndrome is most likely the result of different insults or pathogenic mechanisms, including infections, autoimmune diseases, hereditary and sympathetic dysfunction. According to the infectious theory, the infection of herpes simplex virus, ocular toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, rubella virus, and other viruses have been implicat…

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is an emerging pandemic threat to humans that can be fatal in newborns. Advances in digital health systems and n … of ZIKV in the presence of the closely related dengue virus and other neurotropic viruses, such as herpes simplex virus type 1 and human cytomegalovirus. The NBC platform technology has the potential to be used in the development of point-of-care diagnostics for pathogen detection and disease management in developed and developing countries.

Over the last 10 years there have been only a handful of publications dealing with the oral virome, which is in contrast to the oral microbiome, an area that has seen considerable interest. Here, we survey viral infections in general and then focus on those viruses that are found in and/or are transmitted via the oral cavity; norovirus, rabies, human papillomavirus, Epstein-Barr virus, herpes simplex viruses, hepatitis C virus, and HIV. Increasingly, viral infections have been diagnosed using an oral sample (e.g. saliva mucosal transudate or an oral swab) instead of blood or urine. The results…

Serious bacterial and viral infections occurring in early infancy are important factors affecting morbidity and mortality. Recognition of sepsis by healthcare professionals is vital and allows initiation of appropriate early treatment which can be life-saving and improve outcomes for these infants greatly. This article outlines the leading causes of sepsis, for example, group B Streptococcus (GBS), Escherichia coli and herpes simplex virus. We discuss the non-specific ways in which an infant with a serious infection may present to health professionals and highlight crucial features to look for…

Peripheral injury of the facial nerve is a frequent disorder. It is a stressful situation for the patient and it is functionally hazardous f … he diagnosis. The pathophysiology of BP remains unclear, but seems to be due to the reactivation of Herpes simplex virus type 1 within the intrapetrous pathway of facial nerve. The treatment remains controversial but, for most of the authors, consists of early administration of corticosteroids with or without antiviral agents. Ninety percent of the patients reco …

Exposure to UV radiation is recognized to suppress cell-mediated immunity and therefore could adversely affect the course of a viral infection. Rodent models of viral infection confirm this possibility but the situation in human subjects is not so clear, apart from two exceptions. These are herpes simplex, in which sunlight exposure can cause reactivation, and certain papillomavirus types in which sunlight exposure can lead to the development of nonmelanoma skin cancer. In both cases, there are UV response elements in the viral genomes that alter the normal interactions between the viruses and…

Shortly after his return to the Netherlands from a trip to Ontario, a part of Canada where infection with West-Nile virus has been reported, a 69-year-old man became increasingly confused and generally unwell, accompanied by fever. The clinical picture was compatible with viral encephalitis and this was supported by EEG findings and the results of the cerebrospinal-fluid examination. MRI of the brain did not contribute to the diagnosis. The patient was treated with aciclovir because herpes simplex encephalitis was suspected, and he recovered from his illness within a few days. The EEG normalis…

OBJECTIVE: To present two cases of post-infectious encephalitis of the brain stem (ETC) in infancy, which is very infrequent at this age.
C … ETC is rarely seen in infancy. A high degree of suspicion and early treatment of ETC caused by the herpes simplex virus is necessary, since there is usually a high mortality or serious neurological sequelae.

Herpes simplex Virus type 1 (HSV-1) was inoculated into 48 rabbits by 3 different routes: 10 rabbits were dosed by mouth, 18 rabbits injected in the tongue and 14 injected in the perineurium of the facial nerve at its entrance into the stylomastoid foramen. Some of the animals were killed after a week and others after three weeks. Facial palsy was produced in none of the cases. Seroconversion was demonstrated in the peripheral blood of 100% of the inoculated animals. Cultures of macerate of the facial nerve and geniculate ganglion, as well as of the ipsilateral medulla, were negative. DNA from…
