Regional differences in fiber tractography predict neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates with infantile Krabbe disease.

BACKGROUND: Krabbe disease is a fatal neurodegenerative disease caused by rapid demyelination of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The only available treatment, unrelated umbilical cord blood transplantation, is effective only if performed before clinical symptoms appear. Phenotypic expressions of disease-causing mutations vary widely, but genotype-phenotype relationships are unclear. Therefore, we evaluated diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography with volumetric analysis as a biomarker of early white matter changes and functional disability in presymptomatic infants. METHODS: W

Differentiation of malignant from benign focal splenic lesions: added value of diffusion-weighted MRI.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to evaluate the added value of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for distinguishing between malignant and benign focal splenic lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 53 patients with 11 malignant and 42 benign splenic lesions who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and DWI. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted for splenic lesions. Two blinded observers evaluated the two image sets--that is, the conventional MR images alone versus the combined conventional MR and DW images--and scored their confidence for malignancy of spl

MRI investigation of radiating pain in the lower limbs: value of an additional sequence dedicated to the lumbosacral plexus and pelvic girdle.

OBJECTIVE: In some cases, sciatica-like symptoms radiating through the buttock, anterior thigh, or leg result from spinal root compression in an extraspinal location or from injury to the pelvic girdle. It has been suggested that adding a coronal STIR sequence dedicated to the lumbosacral plexus and pelvis to the routine MRI protocol can provide a good depiction of disorders of this type. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred nine patients with sciatica-like symptoms of suspected lumbar origin were included in the study. Disorders responsible for symptoms involving extraspinal compression of the

Time-dependent diffusion tensor changes of optic nerve in patients with indirect traumatic optic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Indirect traumatic optic neuropathy (ITON) is a devastating cause of permanent visual loss. Axonal degeneration, the characteristic pathological change of ITON, cannot be assessed by conventional imaging. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been widely used as a sensitive non-invasive imaging technique to obtain information on axonal integrity. PURPOSE: To study time-dependent changes in ITON patients with DTI and to provide imaging evidence for clinical diagnosis and therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled 28 subjects with unilateral ITON who underwent detailed ocular examinat

Non-invasive detection of biliary leaks using Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MR cholangiography: comparison with T2-weighted MR cholangiography.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the added role of T1-weighted (T1w) gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) compared with T2-weighted MRC (T2w-MRC) in the detection of biliary leaks. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with suspected biliary complications underwent routine T2w-MRC and T1w contrast-enhanced (CE) MRC using Gd-EOB-DTPA to identify biliary leaks. Two observers reviewed the image sets separately and together. MRC findings were compared with those of surgery and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiopancreatography.

Extracting structural features of rat sciatic nerve using polarization-sensitive spectral domain optical coherence tomography.

We present spectral domain polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (SD PS-OCT) imaging of peripheral nerves. Structural and polarization-sensitive OCT imaging of uninjured rat sciatic nerves was evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. OCT and its functional extension, PS-OCT, were used to image sciatic nerve structure with clear delineation of the nerve boundaries to muscle and adipose tissues. A long-known optical effect, bands of Fontana, was also observed. Postprocessing analysis of these images provided significant quantitative information, such as epineurium thickness

An automatic deformable registration method to evaluate parotid glands shrinkage during radiotherapy treatment in Tomotherapy.

The aim of this study is to provide a method to track the anatomical alterations of parotid glands during radiation treatment. The method we implemented is based on an intensity-based free-form deformable registration to realign the planning kilo-Voltage CT (kVCT) and the daily Mega-Voltage (MVCT) image sets and on an automatic contour propagation algorithm based on surface construction by triangular mesh. The accuracy of the method was evaluated through visual inspection and comparison with manual contours drawn by expert physicians. The uncertainties of automatic contours were similar to tho

Evaluation of intracranial stenoses and aneurysms with accelerated 4D flow.

The aim of this study was to evaluate intracranial arterial stenoses and aneurysms with accelerated time-resolved three-dimensional (3D) phase-contrast MRI or 4D flow. The 4D flow technique was utilized to image four normal volunteers, two patients with intracranial stenoses and two patients with intracranial aneurysms. In order to reduce scan time, parallel imaging was combined with an acquisition strategy that eliminates the corners of k-space. In the two patients with intracranial stenoses, 4D flow velocity measurements showed that one patient had normal velocity profiles in agreement with

Increased signal intensity of the cochlea on pre- and post-contrast enhanced 3D-FLAIR in patients with vestibular schwannoma.

INTRODUCTION: In the vestibular schwannoma patients, the pathophysiologic mechanism of inner ear involvement is still unclear. We investigated the status of the cochleae in patients with vestibular schwannoma by evaluating the signal intensity of cochlear fluid on pre- and post-contrast enhanced thin section three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR). METHODS: Twenty-eight patients were retrospectively analyzed. Post-contrast images were obtained in 18 patients, and 20 patients had the records of their pure-tone audiometry. Regions of interest of both cochleae (C) and of

Longitudinal quantitative evaluation of lesion size change in femoral head osteonecrosis using three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging and image registration.

It remains controversial whether some lesions of femoral head osteonecrosis regress during the natural course of the disease. With image registration, accurately matched image sets of the same subject can be acquired at different times. We applied image registration to evaluate lesion size change and assessed accuracy and usefulness compared to volume measurements and a conventional method. We also investigated whether lesions regress with this technique and with volume measurements. Baseline and 1 year minimum follow-up scans were conducted on 25 patients (31 hips) without radiological eviden

Diagnostic value of different imaging features for patients with suspected gout: A network meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Microscopic identification of monosodium urate (MSU) crystals is the gold standard for gout diagnosis. However, joint aspiration is not always practical, and imaging is increasingly used in clinical practice. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of imaging features for gout compared with microscopy, using network meta-analysis methodology. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched for studies reporting on the use of imaging modalities to diagnose gout in patients with an unclear diagnosis or suspected gout, which was later confirmed by micr

Deep Resolve Boost in 2D MRI for Neuroradiology: A Comparative Evaluation of Diagnostic Gains and Potential Risks.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Deep Resolve Boost (DRB) applied to accelerated acquisition (ACC) offers the potential to reduce MRI acquisition time and improve image quality. However, studies on the potential impact on artifacts, anatomic delineation, and the depiction of imaging findings are scarce. This study aims to fill this gap and evaluates the clinical performance of DRB-ACC in 2D MRI sequences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 256 paired 2D sequences (T2/turbo inversion recovery magnitude, and FLAIR) were acquired from 200 patients undergoing routine neuroradi

A comprehensive quantitative and qualitative assessment of TGSE-BLADE DWI in postoperative imaging following intracranial tumor resection.

PURPOSE: Postoperative MRI plays a pivotal role in assessing residual disease and planning therapy after intracranial tumor resection. As acute perioperative infarction may mimic enhancing and non-enhancing tumor tissue in follow-up imaging, the initial postoperative MRI examination is essential for this purpose. However, conventional DWI techniques like RESOLVE are often impaired by artifacts from intracranial air. This study compares RESOLVE DWI with TGSE-BLADE DWI within early postoperative scans to improve diagnostic confidence in identifying ischemic changes. METHOD: In a retrospective,

Interactive deep learning for myocardial scar segmentation using cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: Following myocardial infarction, late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) provides a reliable metric for risk stratification and therapeutic planning. However, conventional segmentation methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive, with high inter-observer variability and inconsistent performance in routine clinical practice. This study sought to develop an interactive deep learning system for scar segmentation and quantification. METHODS: The framework was developed and evaluated using LGE-CMR images from 348 patients with chronic my
