Video capsule endoscopy is a safe and noninvasive, well-endurable method of the direct visual inspection of the whole of the small intestine. The most frequent indications for video capsule endoscopy are the diagnostics of latent gastro-intestinal bleedings, angiodysplasias, Crohn disease, celiac disease, syndromes of hereditary polyposis and tumors of the small intestine. Gallstone ileus is an uncommon complication of cholelithiasis, with a high morbidity and mortality rate - usually related to the delayed diagnosis of intestinal obstruction. Diagnosing gallstone ileus needs a high index of suspicion. A case of a gallstone ileus is reported. The clinical presentation, radiological features, intraoperative findings, operative procedure and literature review are presented.

Meckel's diverticulum occurs in about 1-3% of general population. The majority of them are asymptomatic and incidentally found at laparotomy. The most common complication due to Meckel's diverticulum in adults is intestinal obstruction. The frequency of symptoms decreases with age. Enteroliths are rarely formed in a Meckel's diverticulum and are known to cause intestinal obstruction. These should be considered in the differential diagnosis of radioopaque shadows in the plain abdominal films. We describe a rare presentation of Meckel's diverticulum in an elderly woman.

OBJECTIVES: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is defined as an abnormally high bacterial population level in the small intestine. Intestinal motor dysfunction associated with hypothyroidism could predispose to bacterial overgrowth. Luminal bacteria could modulate gastrointestinal symptoms and interfere with levothyroxine absorption. The aims of the present study were to assess the prevalence and clinical pattern of bacterial overgrowth in patients with a history of overt hypothyroidism and the effects of bacterial overgrowth decontamination on thyroid hormone levels.

An epidemiological study of gastrointestinal helminths of dogs (Canis familiaris) in two veterinary clinics in Ibadan, Nigeria, was conducted between January 2001 and December 2002. Faecal samples collected from 959 dogs were processed by modified Kato-Katz technique and then examined for helminth eggs. The results of the study showed that 237 (24.7%) of the dogs examined were infected with different types of helminths. A 27-year-old Thai man presented with chronic watery diarrhea for 2 years. The diagnosis of capillariasis was made by enteroscopy after negative repeated stool tests. Here, the authors reported the first case of abnormal endoscopic finding of intestinal capillariasis. It showed segmental erythematous and swelling of proximal jejunal mucosa with an area of superficial erosion covered by exudates. The parasitic eggs were identified in jejunal content and worms were identified in jejunal mucosa. He was successfully treated with albendazole.
