Neuronal responses of the rabbit brainstem during performance of the classically conditioned nictitating membrane (NM)/eyelid response.

Through the use of a chronic microdrive recording system, neuronal unit activity was recorded throughout the brainstem of the rabbit during performance of the classically conditioned nictitating membrane (NM) extension/eyeblink response using an acoustical conditioned stimulus (CS) and a corneal airpuff unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Regions which exhibited neuronal responses near the onset of the learned response were found to be relatively localized to: the abducens, accessory abducens, and facial nuclei (the motoneurons known to innervate the muscles responsible for expression of the conditi

A Conversation About the Ethics of Past and Future Memory Care Models: Perspectives from the First Two European Dementia Villages.

Dementia care organizations face a range of daunting environmental changes and challenges. Internationally, there is a long history of efforts to improve quality of care and life for individuals with dementia. In a time of particular attention to the images of older adults confined to a single or shared room in a care facility due to COVID-19, autonomy becomes the overarching problem, not only because in general institutions limit the freedom of frail elders, but because the existential conditions that create the need for long term care such as chronic disease, cognitive decline, and the need

Third Trimester-Equivalent Alcohol Exposure Induces Alterations in Locomotor Activity, Anxiety and Risk-Related Behaviors, and Susceptibility to Mechanical Allodynia in Adulthood in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can lead to the development of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), which are neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by behavioral dysregulation, learning deficits, and cognitive inflexibilities. Alcohol exposure is harmful at all stages of human gestation, including the third trimester. This developmental window-characterized by rapid brain growth, myelination, and neural circuit formation-may be particularly vulnerable, yet the long-lasting behavioral and sensory consequences of exposure during this period remain poorly understood. Chronic Social Defeat During Adolescence Induces Short- and Long-Term Behavioral and Neuroendocrine Effects in Male Swiss-Webster Mice.

Chronic stress exposure during adolescence is a significant risk factor for the development of depression. Chronic social defeat (CSD) in rodents is an animal model of depression with excellent ethological, predictive, discriminative, and face validity. Because the CSD model has not been thoroughly examined as a model of stress-induced depression within the adolescence stage, the present study analyzed the short- and long-term behavioral and neuroendocrine effects of CSD during early adolescence. Therefore, adolescent male Swiss-Webster (SW) mice were exposed to the CSD model from postnatal da

Growing Older in the Shadow of Childhood Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse: Women's Reflections on Parenthood Experiences Throughout the Life Course.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The long-term effect of intrafamilial sexual abuse for the survivors' parenting rarely focuses on older women who are mothers of adult children. The aim of this study was to explore the parenthood experiences of aging women survivors of intrafamilial sexual abuse, using the life course perspective as a conceptual framework. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Interpretive phenomenological analysis was used to analyze the narratives of 19 older women survivors of intrafamilial sexual abuse. RESULTS: The narratives revealed 4 themes: (a) "How did I raise those kids? I reall

Blockade of Serotonin 5-HT6 Receptor Constitutive Activity Alleviates Cognitive Deficits in a Preclinical Model of Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common inherited disorder caused by mutations of the NF1 gene that encodes the Ras-GTPase activating protein neurofibromin, leading to overactivation of Ras-dependent signaling pathways such as the mTOR pathway. It is often characterized by a broad range of cognitive symptoms that are currently untreated. The serotonin 5-HT6 receptor is a potentially relevant target in view of its ability to associate with neurofibromin and to engage the mTOR pathway to compromise cognition in several cognitive impairment paradigms. Here, we show that constitutively active 5

[Minimal cerebral dysfunctions and ADHD in adulthood].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is of great importance not only in children but also in adults; however, despite extensive research there are still many unsolved questions with respect to the diagnosis. Patients not only suffer from attention deficits and hyperactivity but also a variety of other problems, such as dyspraxia, problems with stimulus discrimination, dysgrammatism, legasthenia, or motor coordination problems. Furthermore, there are also psychopathological disorders, such as problems with memory, formal thinking, emotional modulation, drive and vegetative stability,

Challenges in the development of rodent models of mild traumatic brain injury.

Approximately 75% of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are classified mild (mTBI). Despite the high frequency of mTBI, it is the least well studied. The prevalence of mTBI among service personnel returning from Operations Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Enduring Freedom (OEF) and the recent reports of an association between repeated mTBI and the early onset of Alzheimer's and other types of dementias in retired athletes has focused much attention on mTBI. The study of mTBI requires the development and validation of experimental models and one of the most basic requirements for an experimental model is th

T-type channel blockade impairs long-term potentiation at the parallel fiber-Purkinje cell synapse and cerebellar learning.

CaV3.1 T-type channels are abundant at the cerebellar synapse between parallel fibers and Purkinje cells where they contribute to synaptic depolarization. So far, no specific physiological function has been attributed to these channels neither as charge carriers nor more specifically as Ca(2+) carriers. Here we analyze their incidence on synaptic plasticity, motor behavior, and cerebellar motor learning, comparing WT animals and mice where T-type channel function has been abolished either by gene deletion or by acute pharmacological blockade. At the cellular level, we show that CaV3.1 channels

Spinal glia modulate both adaptive and pathological processes.

Recent research indicates that glial cells control complex functions within the nervous system. For example, it has been shown that glial cells contribute to the development of pathological pain, the process of long-term potentiation, and the formation of memories. These data suggest that glial cell activation exerts both adaptive and pathological effects within the CNS. To extend this line of work, the present study investigated the role of glia in spinal learning and spinal learning deficits using the spinal instrumental learning paradigm. In this paradigm rats are transected at the second t

Research on Remaining Useful Life Prediction of Control Rod Drive Mechanism Rotor Components in Floating Nuclear Reactor.

Aiming at the difficult problem of predicting the running state of the rotor of a Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM) in a floating nuclear reactor, this paper proposes a Remaining Useful Life (RUL) prediction method based on Variational Mode Decomposition and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (VMD-BiLSTM). Firstly, a bench experiment of the CRDM is carried out to collect the full operational cycle (full-stroke) vibration signals of the CRDM. Secondly, the collected data are decomposed based on the VMD, and the typical vibration signals at different stages of the experiment are used to verif

Flexible multilevel nonvolatile biocompatible memristor with high durability.

Current protein or glucose based biomemristors have low resistance-switching performance and require complex structural designs, significantly hindering the development of implantable memristor devices. It is imperative to discover novel candidate materials for biomemristor with high durability and excellent biosafety for implantable health monitoring. Herein, we initially demonstrate the resistance switching characteristics of a nonvolatile memristor in a configuration of Pt/AlOOH/ITO consisting of biocompatible AlOOH nanosheets sandwiched between a Indium Tin Oxides (ITO) electrode and a pla

Placental CRH as a Signal of Pregnancy Adversity and Impact on Fetal Neurodevelopment.

Early life is a period of considerable plasticity and vulnerability and insults during that period can disrupt the homeostatic equilibrium of the developing organism, resulting in adverse developmental programming and enhanced susceptibility to disease. Fetal exposure to prenatal stress can impede optimum brain development and deranged mother's hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis) stress responses can alter the neurodevelopmental trajectories of the offspring. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and glucocorticoids, regulate fetal neurogenesis and while CRH exerts neuroprotective a

A retrospective study of clinical features and outcome in patients with refractory or recurrent hepatoblastoma: A single institution experience.

BACKGROUND: Hepatoblastoma (HB) is the most common childhood primary hepatic malignancy. The overall survival rate in patients with HB has reached more than 80% over the past decades. The poor prognostic and high-risk HB have been defined, but the treatment and cure of refractory or relapsed HB is still an arduous task. METHODS: The complete records of HB in patients under the age of 18 at the MacKay Memorial Hospital between 1990 and 2019 were examined. RESULTS: The treatment results for 11 patients with refractory or relapsed HB are presented. The multi-modality treatment records were revi

[Drugs during pregnancy--effects on the mother and next generation].

Drug abuse during pregnancy is a growing problem in all developed countries of the world. Drug-abusing women have irregular menstrual cycle often resulting in amenorrhea. However, the irregular cycle does not mean that the drug-abusing women cannot become pregnant and in that case they expose to the effects of the drug not only themselves but also their fetus. The drug easily crosses the placental barrier into the fetal body and to the maternal milk and affects both pre- and postnatal development of the child. After the cessation of the drug exposure the child has similar withdrawal symptoms a

Efficacy and acceptability of dienogest among patients with endometriosis in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting women of reproductive age and often associated with pain, impaired fertility, and reduced quality of life. Management requires long-term strategies, with medical treatment preferred over repeated surgery. Treatment selection must balance efficacy, cost, patient preference, and safety. Dienogest is a progestin shown to be effective, but real-world data in Thai women remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dienogest in this population. METHODS: This single-arm, real-world prospective observational study w
