Biofilms by E. coli is not only the primary cause of recurrent urinary tract infections, but also lead to medical device-associated infections. Ever increasing antibiotic resistance due to biofilms has sparked a search for plant-based replacements. This study examines anti-biofilm potential of essential oils from lemon (Citrus limon), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), and lavender (Lavandula officinalis) against 26 clinical isolates of E. coli. Essential oils (EOs) were extracted by using hydro-distillation and characterized by GC-MS and FT-IR. Biofilms were quantitatively and qualitatively ev

The detrimental impact of blood on the antimicrobial activity of AgNbO3 particles was identified and investigated. It was observed that the impact is more severe in the case of lysed blood. The same phenomenon also operates in the case of commonly used silver salt, AgNO3. The inhibition was shown to be due to hemoglobin, but may be unrelated to the heme moiety. In an attempt to find additives to mitigate the inhibitory effect of hemoglobin, iron ions and the chelating agent, K2EDTA, were initially considered as potential candidates. Including ferric iron on the particles was shown to have a ma

Polyionenes are polymers with antibacterial properties that hold great promise for the development of applications aiming to preserve against microbial surface contamination. In this study, the effect of 6-6 polyionene (PI 6-6) on a model Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, was deciphered using next-generation, label-free shotgun proteomics. Cells were exposed to two sub-minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the polymer before performing comprehensive proteomic analysis. Under these conditions, the abundance of up to 30 % of the proteins detected was significantly modulated compare

Phenolic compounds form the largest group of phytochemical compounds in plants. They comprise nearly 8.000 molecules divided into around ten chemical classes, and more than ten classes have already been shown to have pharmacological potential. In this context, this study tested the in-vitro bioactivity, antimicrobial aspect and vegetal compounds of Artemisia herba-alba using HPLC-DAD test. Data indicated that the hemostatic effect of the chloroform fraction was more pronounced and reached a reducing rate of clotting time of 70.91% for the highest tested dose. The photoprotective effect of this

Fusarium species are filamentous fungi which can cause various invasive and non-invasive conditions in humans, most notably keratitis and onychomycosis. Fusarium genus is divided into species complexes (SC), which are further separated into species. It is recommended to use molecular methods for species complex/species identification due to the difficulties of morphological species diagnosis. Identification of Fusarium strains is crucial since antifungal susceptibility and virulence factors are likely to vary between species. In the present study, it was aimed to identify Fusarium strains by m

Endophytic fungi are well recognized as prolific producers of structurally diverse natural products. In this study, three endophytic fungal isolates - Penicillium singorense MA-S1, MA-S3, and PDA-S2 - were obtained in Sasmuan mangrove forest, which had previously been affected and altered by the lahar from the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo. Morphological characterization and 18S rDNA/ITS sequencing confirmed their taxonomic placement in the Penicillium genus. The three isolates were subjected to fermentation using rice medium, and metabolites were extracted using ethyl acetate. Crude extracts

This study evaluated whether penicillin MICs can predict piperacillin susceptibility in Enterococcus faecalis. Among 427 strains, 10 were resistant to piperacillin. Even strains with penicillin MICs of 4-8 µg/mL may exhibit resistance. These findings suggest that even penicillin MICs within the susceptible range may indicate piperacillin resistance, challenging CLSI guidelines.

Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) M100Ed24 (2024) states that Streptococcus pneumoniae susceptible to oral penicillin can be considered susceptible to various β-lactams, including oral cephalosporins. However, surrogacy guidance is not available for isolates nonsusceptible to oral penicillin. Instead, such isolates require specific MIC testing and interpretations for reporting susceptibility to oral cephalosporins, for which susceptibility testing is limited in most automated systems, and consequently restricts information pertaining to oral cephalosporins at an individual ins

Fluconazole resistance in Candida parapsilosis is an increasing global concern, with resistance rates varying widely and reaching up to 80% in some regions. This trend has led to hospital outbreaks, primarily driven by mutations in the ERG11 gene, especially the Y132F substitution. The clinical relevance of fluconazole resistance remains controversial, as studies have yielded conflicting results regarding its impact on mortality. While some studies described an increased mortality associated with resistant strains, others reported no significant difference. Treatment options are limited: echin
