Screening for negative emotions and analysis of related factors among general surgery inpatients: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse psychological states in surgical patients can impact outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate mood disorders and associated factors in general surgery inpatients using the Huaxi Emotional Distress Index (HEI). METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed HEI scores of 20,398 adult patients hospitalized for elective surgery at a tertiary hospital in China (2018-2021). Univariable and multivariable logistic regression identified factors linked to moderate/severe mood disturbances. RESULTS: Factors linked to moderate/severe mood disturbances were identified throu

Asthma medication adherence, control, and psychological symptoms: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nonadherence to therapies and psychological disorders are associated with poor asthma control. This study aims to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms, asthma control, and adherence to inhalers and to investigate whether there is an association of anxiety and depressive symptoms with adherence to inhalers and asthma control. METHODS: We measured anxiety and depressive symptoms using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale in patients with asthma. Asthma Control Test and the 10-Item Test of Adherence to Inhalers Scale were used to assess levels of asthma contr

Posttraumatic stress symptoms in adolescents and young adults with a chronic somatic disease: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with a chronic somatic disease (CD) have a 3-fold higher risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than healthy controls. In addition, elevated post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) have a negative impact on CD severity, treatment adherence, health problems and functional impairment. However, a more detailed understanding of this comorbidity is lacking. METHODS: AYA with type 1 diabetes mellitus, juvenile idiopathic arthritis or cystic fibrosis (12-21 years of age) and elevated anxiety and/or depression symptoms, as well as their reference pe

A structured telephone-delivered intervention to reduce problem alcohol use (Ready2Change): study protocol for a parallel group randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current population surveys suggest around 20% of Australians meet diagnostic criteria for an alcohol use disorder. However, only a minority seek professional help due to individual and structural barriers, such as low health literacy, stigma, geography, service operating hours and wait lists. Telephone-delivered interventions are readily accessible and ideally placed to overcome these barriers. We will conduct a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to examine the efficacy of a standalone, structured telephone-delivered intervention to reduce alcohol consumption, problem severity and r

Psychological pain responses in athletes and non-athletes with low back pain: Avoidance and endurance matter.

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctional psychological pain responses, namely fear-avoidance (FAR), including catastrophizing and helplessness, as well as endurance-related responses (ER), including thought suppression and overactivity, have been shown to be risk factors for persistent low back pain (LBP). Literature suggests that athletes may differ from non-athletes regarding psychological responses to pain. OBJECTIVES: This study set out to compare FAR and ER between athletes and non-athletes with LBP. It was hypothesized that athletes would report less frequent FAR and more frequent ER, and that both FA

Space to Act, Think, and Create.

My career began with the exciting beginnings of cognitive psychology. It took me to memory, mental representations, categorization, spatial cognition, language, event cognition, stories, discourse, visualizations, comics, gesture, joint action, creativity, design, and more. On the way I enjoyed collaborations with friends and students in many areas and many countries. I am slowing down just as brain, AI, computational models, and big data are taking over the field, bringing new methods and new ways of thinking and, with that, new talent and inspired minds.

The impact of an ostomy on sexuality.

Creation of an ostomy results in physiological and psychological changes that affect sexuality. Major physiological complications for men include erectile dysfunction and ejaculatory difficulties. For women, dyspareunia is the most common physiological complication. The presence of an ostomy can alter a person's body image, which, in turn, influences the desire for sexual activity. Sexuality concerns should be addressed with all patients undergoing ostomy placement. The PLISSIT model, which outlines four stages of interventions used in sexual counseling, can be used to guide nursing care.

Pathological and nonpathological dissociation: the relevance of childhood trauma.

Although previous research has implicated a history of childhood trauma in the development of dissociative tendencies, insufficient cognizance (in this context) has been taken of the distinction between pathological and nonpathological dissociation. In this study, the relationship between childhood trauma and both pathological and nonpathological dissociation was investigated in a sample of 100 Australian adults. Pathological dissociation was positively predicted by dimensions of childhood trauma, but no such relationship was found for nonpathological dissociation (psychological absorption). T

A prospective study of life events, social support, and psychological symptomatology during the transition from high school to college.

Life events, perceived social support, and psychological symptoms were studied prospectively among older adolescents during the transition from high school to college. These variables were reciprocally related to one another in patterns which changed over a period of 6 months. The findings are supportive of a transactional model of stress that emphasizes reciprocal, rather than linear, paths of influence. Further, the study highlights the importance of studying stress and social support during life transitions that may constitute periods of greater vulnerability to life events.

Sound as a bell: a deep learning approach for health status classification through speech acoustic biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Human health is a complex, dynamic concept encompassing a spectrum of states influenced by genetic, environmental, physiological, and psychological factors. Traditional Chinese Medicine categorizes health into nine body constitutional types, each reflecting unique balances or imbalances in vital energies, influencing physical, mental, and emotional states. Advances in machine learning models offer promising avenues for diagnosing conditions like Alzheimer's, dementia, and respiratory diseases by analyzing speech patterns, enabling complementary non-invasive disease diagnosis. The s

Foraging models explain human exploration in uncertain tasks.

Different fields have fundamentally different models of how decisions are made. Psychology and neuroscience tend to assume that decisions are made by calculating and comparing the values of all options. In ethology, conversely, decisions tend to be binary regardless of the number of options: Decision-makers calculate the value of continuing to exploit some option and explore only when this value drops below a threshold. Because these fields use incompatible methods, it remains unclear which view better describes human decision-making. We find that humans use compare-to-threshold computations e

Understanding Variation in Longitudinal Data Using Latent Growth Mixture Modeling.

OBJECTIVE: This article guides researchers through the process of specifying, troubleshooting, evaluating, and interpreting latent growth mixture models. METHODS: Latent growth mixture models are conducted with small example dataset of N = 117 pediatric patients using Mplus software. RESULTS: The example and data show how to select a solution, here a 3-class solution. We also present information on two methods for incorporating covariates into these models. CONCLUSIONS: Many studies in pediatric psychology seek to understand how an outcome changes over time. Mixed models or latent growth mo

A Lasso and a Regression Tree Mixed-Effect Model with Random Effects for the Level, the Residual Variance, and the Autocorrelation.

Research in psychology is experiencing a rapid increase in the availability of intensive longitudinal data. To use such data for predicting feelings, beliefs, and behavior, recent methodological work suggested combinations of the longitudinal mixed-effect model with Lasso regression or with regression trees. The present article adds to this literature by suggesting an extension of these models that-in addition to a random effect for the mean level-also includes a random effect for the within-subject variance and a random effect for the autocorrelation. After introducing the extended mixed-effe

From partner synchrony to corner support: interpersonal co-regulation and performance recovery in DanceSport and boxing.

Sport psychology has often treated performance regulation as predominantly intrapersonal, yet competitive recovery can also be shaped by relational information. This Conceptual Analysis introduces the Relational Co-Regulation and Performance Recovery (RCPR) Model, a perturbation-centered framework for explaining how partner- and coach-generated inputs may alter recovery after within-competition disruption. Crucially, relational regulatory input is defined independently of success: an observable signal is a regulatory attempt because of its timing, content, and plausible task function, not beca

Bee larvae ameliorate andropause-like symptoms via a hormone-independent, antioxidant mechanism.

Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH), also known as the male menopause, is characterized by a decline in sexual function as well as various physical and psychological symptoms, including anxiety. Although bee larvae have historically been utilized as a traditional food and medicine, their efficacy and physiological mechanisms of action against male menopausal symptoms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of bee larvae (BL) on sexual and anxiety-like behaviors using two rodent models of the male menopause: aged rats and castrated mice. In the aged rat model (64 weeks old), dietar
