OBJECTIVE: Acute radiation proctitis is a relevant complication of pelvic radiation. The purpose of this study was to investigate two markers of gut inflammation as non-invasive diagnostic tools to evaluate acute radiation proctitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients who underwent radiotherapy for prostate cancer took part in this prospective study. Radiation-induced toxicity was evaluated weekly during radiotherapy in compliance with the CTC toxicity criteria. Trauma patients present with and have the potential to develop an array of systemic and metabolic disturbances. Adult respiratory distress syndrome has been identified as a life-threatening development, especially in trauma patients. A systematic approach to care utilizing the acronyms FASTHUG and BANDAIDS, along with incorporating lung protective strategies, provides avenues to decrease mortality related to adult respiratory distress syndrome. A case study presentation, pathophysiology related to symptoms, interventions, and clinical outcomes are presented.

We describe the anaesthetic management of a pair of thoracopagus twins of 14 months of age undergoing complex cardiac evaluation. Synchronous ventilation of the twins, needed for the ECG-gated magnetic resonance imaging-angiography, was achieved through a Carlens (Y) adaptor during procedures and transport. The complex logistical implications are obvious. We also describe the first use of bispectral index monitor for detection of cross-circulation in conjoint twins.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationships between gastric and oesophageal pH estimated by 24-hours pH-metry.

To investigate the effects of blood pressure (BP) on kidney function, we reviewed 116 patients who had a median follow-up of 40.5 months. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acid gastro-oesophageal reflux is one of the most important causes of chronic cough. The response to acid suppression in these patients is not as good as in patients with heartburn but improvement with antireflux surgery has been reported, suggesting the involvement of a non-acidic gastric component in the refluxate.
