Neurotrophin-3 modified bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells combined with polycaprolactone scaffold can treat denervation-induced muscle atrophy in rats by regulating FasL.

We investigated the effects and mechanisms of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3)-modified bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) combined with a polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold to repair denervation-induced muscle atrophy following sciatic nerve injury (SNI) in rats. An established SNI rat model was utilized to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of BMSCs, pcDNA3.1-NT-3, and NT-3-modified BMSCs scaffold complexes. Functional recovery of peripheral nerves was assessed through serial sciatic functional index (SFI) measurements. Histopathological analyses evaluated nerve regeneration and gastrocnemius muscl

Pregnancy induces degenerative and regenerative changes in the autonomic innervation of the female reproductive tract.

The uterus is supplied with an extensive system of adrenergic nerves. The neurobiological properties of this innervation have been investigated in a series of studies primarily using the guinea-pig as model. The guinea-pig uterus is supplied from three different sources: the paracervical plexus, containing short adrenergic neurons; the inferior mesenteric ganglion; and a cranial source, probably the aorticorenal plexus, via nerves in the uterine suspensory ligaments. The nerve density is higher in the tubal end of the uterine horn and in the cervix than in the main part of the uterine horn. Th

Update of pediatric soft tissue tumors with review of conventional MRI appearance-part 1: tumor-like lesions, adipocytic tumors, fibroblastic and myofibroblastic tumors, and perivascular tumors.

There are numerous soft tissue tumors and tumor-like conditions in the pediatric population. Magnetic resonance imaging is the most useful modality for imaging these lesions. Although certain soft tissue lesions exhibit magnetic resonance features characteristic of a specific diagnosis, most lesions are indeterminate, and a biopsy is necessary for diagnosis. We provide a detailed update of soft tissue tumors and tumor-like conditions that occur in the pediatric population, emphasizing each lesion's conventional magnetic resonance imaging appearance, using the recently released 5th edition of t

Skin flaps for the gynaecologist.

Skin flaps are becoming more frequently indicated in gynecologic surgical practice, especially in oncologic surgery. It is imperative that the gynecologic surgeon of today be well informed in the many physiologic processes of wound healing, also those factors that delay and those that promote wound healing. Knowledge of the detailed anatomy of abdomen, pelvis, vulva, peritoneum and ano-rectal area is essential. An appreciation of the specific muscular attachments, action, blood supply, collateral circulation and nerve supply are important prerequisites. Also, a working knowledge of the tissue

Acute compartment syndrome after open forearm fracture--scale of the problem and case report.

Acute compartment syndrome is caused due to a sudden increase in the tissue pressure in a given fascial compartment. Missed and undiagnosed or not treated in time can lead to irreversible damage to limb muscles and nerves due to ischemia mechanism. This paper presents a case of a patient with an open forearm fracture treated conservatively in plaster.

[The morphological features of the nervous and vascular components of communication systems in the cervix uteri].

The investigation has indicated the presence of adrenergic and cholinergic autonomic nerve terminals (ANT) in the tissues of squamous cell carcinomas of the cervix uteri in a tumor growth area and contralaterally. Heterogeneity of the local neuromediator background in the tumor growth area and contralaterally may be explained, by studying the specific features of the cell microenvironment of ANT.

Communicating hydrocephalus and lysosomal inclusions in mannosidosis.

A 32-year-old man with mannosidosis had a gait disorder develop that was associated with communicating hydrocephalus. The gait disorder improved with ventriculoperitoneal shunting, but proximal muscle weakness remained. Biopsy specimens of muscle and nerve disclosed typical lysosomal inclusions in both tissues, as well as selective loss of unmyelinated axons.

Bioactive keratin-pectin methacrylate multifilament nerve conduits for functional regeneration across segmental nerve defects.

Repair of critical peripheral nerve injuries requires bioactive conduits that provide structural guidance while supporting cellular regeneration. Here, we engineered a biomimetic hydrogel conduit comprising methacrylated pectin (PecMA) functionalized with human hair-derived keratin to integrate fascicle-mimetic architecture with biochemical cues. Keratin was extracted using a urea-based reduction strategy and conjugated to PecMA via thiol-ene chemistry, yielding a dual-crosslinkable bioink. A custom multifilament extrusion platform enabled fabrication of aligned fascicle-like conduits. In vitr

Noninvasive imaging reveals cardiac sympathetic reinnervation in pathologic hearts and suppressed norepinephrine transporter function in healthy hearts after carbon ion irradiation in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac stereotactic radiation therapy is a potential treatment for refractory ventricular tachycardia. We previously reported that carbon ion irradiation, with a higher dose concentration than x-rays, restored gap junction proteins and denervated excess sympathetic nerves in a rabbit heart model. However, histologic analysis is limited to endpoint evaluations, requiring in vivo functional assessments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of heavy ion therapy on mitochondrial and sympathetic nerve function in a rabbit model of hypercholesterolemia (HC), showing symp

Creatine promotes the repair of peripheral nerve injury by affecting macrophage polarization.

The present study aimed to explore whether creatine promotes the repair of peripheral nerve injury and its possible mechanism. In vitro: RAW264.7 cells were used to investigate the role of proteins related to the JAK2/STAT1 pathway in the polarization of macrophages treated with creatine. In vivo: A sciatic nerve crush model was used. After the injury, IL-4 or creatine was injected. The recovery of motor function was assessed by the rotarod test and sciatic function index at 2, 6, 10, and 16 days after injury. At 16 days after injury, the ultrastructure of the nerve tissue was observed under a…
