Infections after oesophageal surgery are studied on sixty patients who received perioperatively two antibiotics (cefoxitin and amikacin). Postoperative infection rate is 62% (pneumopathies: 27%, leakage of cervical anastomoses: 17%). Different parameters which can induce postoperative infection are analyzed. The only significative data are the duration of total parenteral nutrition and of intensive care stay. The commonest isolated organisms are gram negative bacilli (61%) and streptococci (30%). Yeasts infections are frequent, and significantly correlated with antibiotic treatment duration.

To evaluate the results of single and multinodular thyropathies surgical treatment, 1.300 cases operated on from january 1974 to december 1987 were reviewed. 842 patients (64.7%) were female; the average age was 41 +/- 2.4 year. A deficiency of exogenous and endogenous carnitine is present in those pathologies in which the most important clinical sign is represented by weakness and steatosis. We have studied the serum levels of carnitine in 14 children with hepatic disease (8 with acute HAV hepatitis, 2 with acute HBV hepatitis, 2 with toxic hepatitis, 2 with chronic hepatitis). Brain tumors are the second most common childhood malignancy. Between 1975 and 1985, 462 newly diagnosed patients were treated at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; 207 (45%) tumors arose in the posterior fossa and 255 (55%) appeared supratentorially. Experimental infection with Salmonella stanley was produced by oral, intravenous and intramuscular routes in day-old chicks. The earliest evidence of the presence of the organisms was in duodenal mucosa six hours after oral infection. The concentration of digoxin-like immunoreactive substance was measured by immunoassay in umbilical venous blood from six normal and 19 fetuses with a variety of cardiac and noncardiac disorders. Fetal blood was obtained either by percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (n = 13) or at delivery (n = 12). Three women received digoxin for fetal indications. We have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to evaluate 22 patients with various clinical and/or radiographic findings potentially associated with intraspinal pathology whose evaluation would have necessitated myelography or computed tomography scanning in the past.
