Using a Nature-Based Mindfulness Intervention to Improve Mental Health in Nurse Anesthesia Students: A Pilot Study.

Resident registered nurse anesthetists (RRNAs) face high levels of depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) due to the academic, clinical, and financial demands of graduate anesthesia education. Nature-based mindfulness, which integrates nature exposure with mindfulness practices, has shown promise in reducing psychological distress but remains underexplored among RRNAs. This single-arm pilot, pre-/posttest study evaluated the effectiveness of a nature-based mindfulness intervention (NBMI) on DAS in a cohort of third-year RRNAs in the southeastern United States. The 8-week intervention included g

The development of an integrative surf therapy program for trauma survivors: A conceptual model and case illustration.

Psychological trauma can fundamentally disrupt an individual's sense of safety and bodily autonomy, straining existing mental health resources and calling for innovative therapeutic approaches. This article introduces "Tools from the Waves," an integrative surf therapy program designed to enhance emotional resilience, lower the risk of developing PTSD, and help survivors manage or reduce their current symptoms. The 15-week intervention integrates therapeutic surfing with psychoeducational guidance, and group therapy. Therapeutic surfing functions as a "bottom-up" somatic intervention, utilizin

Design and impact of systems for artificial sensory feedback in lower-limb prostheses.

INTRODUCTION: The loss of motor function due to lower limb amputation may be compensated by a prosthetic leg. To improve their functionality, systems for artificial sensory feedback have been proposed, but have yet to reach widespread clinical use. This review aims to provide an overview of the design and impact of such systems. AREAS COVERED: Based on a systematic literature search in the Pubmed and Embase databases (21 September 2025), we analyzed 63 studies proposing a total of 81 feedback systems. When categorized according to the feedback variable, pre-processing techniques (discretizati

System responsiveness and health literacy in return-to-work challenges for individuals with chronic low back pain: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: This study explores how individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP) experience and navigate return-to-work (RTW) processes and identifies their suggestions for improving coherence in RTW processes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen outpatients from a Spine Clinic, all of whom were either currently or recently on long-term sick leave (exceeding 30 days) due to CLBP, participated in three semi-structured interviews and four focus group sessions. The data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted through a health literacy (HL) perspective. RESULTS: Four overarchi

Repressed Anxiety: A Concept Analysis.

This concept analysis aims to clarify the uncertain and underexplored concept of repressed anxiety, addressing its complexities and ambiguities to better inform nursing practice, research, and the development of clinical interventions. The Walker and Avant method of concept analysis was applied to literature across psychology, nursing, and sociology. Articles were reviewed using search terms such as "repressed anxiety," "repression," "defense mechanism," and "emotional suppression." Antecedents, characteristics, and consequences of repressed anxiety were identified, and model and borderline ca

Circadian rhythms and depression: A narrative review of human research.

Depression is a serious mental and psychological disorder, characterized by a high incidence rate, high disability rate and high recurrence rate. It is a major problem that urgently needs to be solved in the field of global public health. Circadian rhythms regulate various physiological and behavioral processes in the human body. Previous studies have shown that there is a close connection between circadian rhythmicity and depression. Factors such as shift work, jet lag, social jet lag, chronotypes, and light at night exposure are all related to the occurrence and development of depression. An

A New Perspective on Clinical Scale Validation: Leveraging Sentence Embeddings for Pre-Validation Semantic Analysis.

Traditional clinical scale development is a lengthy and resource-intensive process, particularly during the empirical validation phase. This paper proposes a paradigm shift by introducing a computational pre-validation framework that leverages sentence embedding models to assess semantic properties of scale items prior to data collection. By transforming items into high-dimensional vector representations and analyzing their relationships within an MTMM-like structure, our method identifies potential item ambiguity, evaluates construct coherence, and tests discriminant validity at an early stag

Pathogens Associated with Domestic Cats (Felis catus), Their Public Health Impact on Children, and Implications of Urban Management.

Domestic cats (Felis catus) are ubiquitous companion animals that provide substantial psychological and social benefits to children and adults alike, but they also serve as reservoirs and vectors for a wide range of zoonotic pathogens. Close physical contact between cats and children, frequent use of shared environments such as homes, playgrounds, and sandboxes, and still-developing hygiene behaviours increase opportunities for exposure to protozoa, helminths, bacteria, fungi, and ectoparasite-borne agents. This review synthesizes current evidence on key feline-associated zoonoses of pediatric

Measuring beliefs about free will: a critical review of the Free Will Inventory.

This review critically evaluates the Free Will Inventory (FWI), a 29-item self-report instrument assessing beliefs about free will, determinism, and dualism, by situating it within broader philosophical and psychological frameworks and prior attempts to measure free will beliefs. To identify relevant peer-reviewed studies, a structured literature search using systematic principles was conducted to locate research that has validated or critiqued the FWI. The review also considers how free will belief is conceptualised and operationalised within the FWI, and the implications this has for interpr

Taking a Closer Look at Teacher Support and Children's Mental Health: The Mediating Role of Self-Concept and the Moderating Role of Area.

Ample evidence has recognized the importance of teacher support for children's mental health. However, less is known about the factors that may play a role in the association between teacher support and children's mental health. In the present study, we examined the mediating role of self-concept and the moderating role of area (i.e., rural vs. urban area) in the relationship between teacher support and children's mental health (i.e., depression and anxiety). We used a sample of Chinese elementary students who enrolled in grades 3 to 6 (N = 525, aged 8-13, 44.54% girls). Results showed that ch

[Anamnesis and examination of an elderly patient.].

Based on their own clinical experience and literature data, the authors present the features of collecting anamnesis of the disease and examining elderly and senile patients. Practical methods of interviewing an elderly patient with age-related memory disorders (collecting an anamnesis of the disease at the same time as the anamnesis of life), hearing (being in the patient's field of vision, avoiding high tones in the voice, speaking clearly, slowly, in silence, the doctor's face should be clearly visible to the patient) are proposed. Antecedent and consequence of using O2O delivery applications: social anxiety, loneliness, and a moderated mediation model.

Online-to-offline delivery applications (ODAs), which link the mobile Internet to local physical businesses, offer prompt delivery of a wide range of items, including but not limited to food delivery. Frequent use of ODAs can be problematic. While the use of ODAs has been connected to physical health issues (e.g., unhealthy diet and sedentary behavior), its association with mental health concerns (e.g., social anxiety and loneliness) remains insufficiently addressed. Consequently, this study aims to explore the relationships among ODA usage, social anxiety, and loneliness by developing and val

How Is Happiness Related to Prosocial Tendencies Among Adolescents From High/Low Household Income Groups? The Protective Mechanism of Social Functioning.

Literature reveals that people who feel happy are more inclined to demonstrate prosocial behaviour. Considering the development of social functioning during adolescence, this study aims to investigate the psychological mechanism underlying the relationship between happiness and prosocial tendencies among adolescents with high- and low-income from a perspective of social functioning (i.e., peer trust and social competence). A sample of 2042 Chinese adolescents (1039 girls, Mage = 15.00, SD = 1.85) were surveyed. Results indicated that peer trust mediated the positive association between happine

Perceptions of justice actors on juvenile fundamental rights and rehabilitation in Vietnam: findings from a multi-institutional survey.

This study explores the perceptions of justice and governance professionals in Vietnam regarding the protection of fundamental rights and the implementation of community-based reintegration measures for juvenile offenders. Drawing on a cross-sectional survey of 285 respondents-including police officers, prosecutors, legal aid providers, commune officials, and other local-level actors-the research investigates three key dimensions: the perceived objectives of juvenile justice, support for a specialized juvenile justice system, and the perceived necessity of 22 child-centered, community-based in

Identity categories and the dilemma of calling police about family violence.

The under-reporting of family violence is a global problem. Multiple barriers to help-seeking have been identified, including some associated with social identities like race, age and gender. This discursive psychology study examines identity and help-seeking in social interaction. We analysed 200 calls classified by police call-takers as family harm using conversation analysis and membership categorization analysis. We found that callers oriented to a locally generated identity category 'the one who called police' as problematic. Callers sought anonymity or proposed cover stories to avoid bei

Integrating Holistic Communication into Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Hospice and Palliative Care: An Approach Based on Peplau's Theory.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) has shown promising results in alleviating psychological and existential suffering among individuals with serious illnesses. In parallel, nursing offers a robust theoretical framework to guide therapeutic communication in this context. This article explores the application of Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations (PTIR) as a foundation for holistic communication in PAT, particularly in hospice and palliative care. We examine how PTIR's core concepts (person, health, environment, and nursing) along with its articulation of therapeutic roles, phases of the

Gratitude predicts best friends' aggressive behaviors but not depressive symptoms: A dyadic study of Chinese early adolescents.

Gratitude has been empirically linked to psychological and behavioral adjustment outcomes during early adolescence. However, the role of gratitude in relation to friends' adjustment outcomes remains unclear, particularly in more interdependent-oriented cultures. To address this gap, this 1-year longitudinal study applied the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model to simultaneously examine whether gratitude would predict adolescents' and their best friends' depressive symptoms and aggressive behaviors. The sample consisted of 1342 students within 671 friendship dyads, initially in the fourth grade

Associations Between Generalist Knowledge of Borderline Personality Disorder and Clinician Factors and Attitudes.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is highly stigmatized. It is associated with negative clinician attitudes, which have been shown to improve with training. This study presents data collected at formal trainings in good psychiatric management (GPM) of BPD at several sites in the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Sweden. Three hundred twenty seven clinical professionals completed a 48-question true/false quiz testing knowledge of GPM, with a small subset (N = 33) that also completed a 13-item assessment of attitudes about BPD. Knowledge of GPM did not differ between course participants of
