Distinct narcolepsy syndromes in Orexin receptor-2 and Orexin null mice: molecular genetic dissection of Non-REM and REM sleep regulatory processes.

Narcolepsy-cataplexy, a neurological disorder associated with the absence of hypothalamic orexin (hypocretin) neuropeptides, consists of two underlying problems: inability to maintain wakefulness and intrusion of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep into wakefulness. Here we document, using behavioral, electrophysiological, and pharmacological criteria, two distinct classes of behavioral arrests exhibited by mice deficient in orexin-mediated signaling. Both OX2R(-/-) and orexin(-/-) mice are similarly affected with behaviorally abnormal attacks of non-REM sleep ("sleep attacks") and show similar deg

Patterns of substance abuse among treatment-seeking pathological gamblers.

Substance abuse patterns were reviewed for a group of patients admitted to the Gambling Treatment Program at the Brecksville Veterans Administration Medical Center. A retrospective chart review of 113 consecutively admitted patients between September 2000 and September 2001 found that 66.4% of pathological gamblers had a lifetime history of substance abuse or dependence at some point in their lives. A history of substance abuse or dependence was less common among gamblers aged 60 and above. In the year prior to admission, 58.1% of those with a history of substance abuse or dependence were acti

Economic stress, coercive family process, and developmental problems of adolescents.

We propose a model of family conflict and coercion that links economic stress in family life to adolescent symptoms of internalizing and externalizing emotions and behaviors. The 180 boys and 198 girls in the study were living in intact families in the rural Midwest, an area characterized by economic decline and uncertainty. Theoretical constructs in the model were measured using both trained observer and family member reports. These adolescents and their parents were interviewed each year for 3 years during the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. Our theoretical model proposes that economic pr

Psychiatric diagnoses of self-reported child abusers.

In order to evaluate lifetime psychiatric diagnoses and prevalence of dyssocial behaviors among self-reported child abusers, three large databases of clinical, community, and family study subjects were examined. Subjects who had acted as parents and who reported any episodes of child battery were compared to those without any history of child battery on prevalence of psychiatric disorders and dyssocial behaviors. Overall, 4% of subjects from the community sample reported child abuse. Abusers not selected through alcoholism treatment were more likely to receive diagnoses of alcoholism, antisoci

Efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions for children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood. Although mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been proposed as promising non-pharmacological treatments, evidence regarding their efficacy in children and adolescents with ADHD remains inconsistent. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted up to December 31, 2025, supplemented by manual screening of reference lists. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which mindfulne

Characteristics of Children and Adolescents with Insomnia and Comorbid Nightmares-A Secondary Analysis of Clinical Samples with an Age Range from 0 to 18 Years.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia disorder in childhood and adolescence has severe implications on overall well-being and development. Age-specific treatments for insomnia disorder with cognitive behavioral interventions (CBT-I) are available and effective. Nightmare disorder also has severe consequences in children and adolescents. However, less is known about children with insomnia (I) and comorbid nightmare disorder (I + N). METHODS: In this retrospective study, data from 499 children and adolescents with insomnia disorder were included. The prevalence of a comorbid nightmare disorder (I + N) was calcu

Radiotherapy-induced basal cell carcinomas of the scalp: are they genetically different?

BACKGROUND: The treatment of tinea capitis using radiotherapy was introduced at the beginning of the twentieth century. In Israel, between 1949 and 1960, approximately 17,000 children underwent radiotherapy treatments for tinea capitis (actual numbers are probably higher due to irradiation in countries of origin as a prerequisite for immigration). Skin cancer presents a major problem for patients who underwent irradiation for the treatment of tinea capitis [aggressive biological behavior, multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), up to 40 lesions in a single patient, with no predisposing conditio

Sex and Genetic Differences in Behavioral Engagement of Crossed High Alcohol-Preferring and Low Alcohol-Preferring Mice.

Excessive levels of alcohol consumption play a major role in numerous alcohol-related harms, including a heightened risk of developing problematic drinking behaviors. Those who develop alcohol use disorder (AUD) often struggle with persistent difficulties in controlling their drinking, experience withdrawal symptoms, and engage in risky behaviors that pose danger to themselves and others. Advances in treating AUD may be supported by identifying specific cognitive and emotional factors that drive excessive alcohol consumption. Recognizing reliable behavioral biomarkers is instrumental in assess

Association of atopic dermatitis with delinquent behaviors in US children and adolescents.

Childhood atopic dermatitis (AD) is associated with chronic itch, pain and sleep disturbance, which may predispose children to high-risk behaviors in their school and home environments. We examined the association between AD and delinquent/high-risk behaviors in children and adolescents. Data were analyzed from The Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth cohort study consisting of 4898 children born in urban cities between 1998 and 2000. A 1-year history of AD was associated with ≥ 75th percentile of mean delinquent behavior scores at age 9 (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) [

Understanding Hand Hygiene Behavior in a Public Hospital in Benin Using the Theoretical Domain Frameworks: The First Step for Designing Appropriate Interventions.

BACKGROUND: Hand Hygiene (HH) is widely recognized to be one of the most successful and cost-effective measures for reducing the incidence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The hand hygiene behavior of hospital healthcare workers (HCWs) is not well-documented in Benin. Therefore, Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) was used to identify the behavioral determinants that may impact HCWs' hand-hygiene compliance in a public hospital. METHODS: A qualitative design comprising face-to-face semi-structured interviews with nine HCWs. The interviews included questions on transmission of infec

The Influence of Antisocial Behavior and Callous-Unemotional Traits on Trajectories of School Engagement and Achievement in South-Korean Children.

Poor educational outcomes are common among children with antisocial behavior problems, including among a subgroup of antisocial children with callous-unemotional traits, who show deficits in empathy, guilt, and prosociality. However, few studies have explored the unique contributions of antisocial behavior and callous-unemotional traits to school outcomes and most prior studies have been conducted in Western countries. The current study thus tested associations between callous-unemotional traits, antisocial behavior, and trajectories of school outcomes among South Korean children. Participants

Sedentary Lifestyle: Overview of Updated Evidence of Potential Health Risks.

One-third of the global population aged 15 years and older engages in insufficient physical activities, which affects health. However, the health risks posed by sedentary behaviors are not well known. The mean daily duration of sedentary behavior is 8.3 hours among the Korean population and 7.7 hours among the American adult population. Sedentary lifestyles are spreading worldwide because of a lack of available spaces for exercise, increased occupational sedentary behaviors such as office work, and the increased penetration of television and video devices. Consequently, the associated health p

The T-type calcium channel antagonist, Z944, alters social behavior in Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rats from Strasbourg.

Abnormalities in social behavior are a co-morbid symptom of idiopathic generalized epilepsies such as childhood absence epilepsy. The Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rats from Strasbourg (GAERS) model is a spontaneously occurring absence epilepsy phenotype closely correlated to that of human absence epilepsies. Similar to the human conditions, GAERS display social abnormalities. Previous studies have only demonstrated social abnormalities in female GAERS, whereas social problems are observed in male and female patients. Seizures in GAERS result in part due to a gain-of-function missense mutation in t

Behavioral and social outcomes in adolescent survivors of childhood cancer: a report from the childhood cancer survivor study.

PURPOSE: Adolescents, regardless of medical history, may face behavioral and social challenges. Cancer and related treatments represent additional challenges for teens navigating the transition from childhood to adulthood. This study was conducted to evaluate behavioral and social outcomes of adolescent childhood cancer survivors using data from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated 2,979 survivors and 649 siblings of cancer survivors to determine the incidence of difficulty in six behavioral and social domains (depression/anxiety, headstrong, attention defic

Comparison of the child and parent forms of the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns in the assessment of children's eating-disordered behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: The assessment of eating-disordered behaviors in middle childhood is challenging. Frequently, both child and parents are queried about the child's eating behavior. However, no direct comparisons between parent and child reports of child eating disturbance have been published. We compared results from the adolescent and parent versions of the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (QEWP-A and QEWP-P, respectively) in a nontreatment sample of overweight and normal weight children. METHOD: The QEWP-A and QEWP-P were administered to 142 overweight (body mass index [BMI] > or = 85t

Mental Health in Young Detainees Predicts Perpetration of and Desistance From Serious, Violent and Chronic Offending.

Mental health problems are common among young offenders but their role in predicting criminal recidivism is still not clear. Early identification and treatment of young offenders at risk of serious, violent, and chronic (SVC) offending is of major importance to increase their chances to develop into a healthy and non-criminal future and protect society from further crime. In the present study, we assessed mental health among 106 young offenders while incarcerated and analyzed their criminal careers up to 15 years after release. We found high rates of mental health issues, especially externaliz

Motives for gambling, cognitive distortions, and irresponsible gambling: Proposal for an explanatory model of gambling addiction in university students.

There are many factors that appear to be directly related to the development of gambling addiction problems, and it is important to understand these relationships from a clinical perspective in order to develop prevention and intervention programs. This research seeks to analyze the relationships these problems have with gambling motives, cognitive distortions and irresponsible gambling behavior, and proposes an explanatory model of gambling addiction. The sample was made up of 258 adults residing in the province of Valencia (59.5% women), with a mean age of 20.95 years (SD = 2.19). A series o

Preventing Harmful Internet Use-Related Addiction Problems in Europe: A Literature Review and Policy Options.

Internet use-related addiction problems are increasingly being recognized on a European scale due to international health organizations considering gaming addiction. In April 2013, the American Psychiatric Association recognized Internet Gaming Disorder in the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and in April 2018, the World Health Organization included Gaming Disorder in the eleventh International Classification of Diseases. However, findings on these problems within this period are lacking in Europe, and a preventive approach is missing globally. A detailed critical l
