BACKGROUND: Pain, unrelated to the initial thermal trauma itself, can result after burn injury and prolong the recovery/rehabilitation phase of the patient's care. This pain, after discharge from the burn unit, may be acute and self-limiting or chronic and contribute to long-term patient morbidity. The purposes of this study were to compare burn patients who had, after discharge from the burn unit, only acute pain with burn patients who developed chronic, neuropathic pain (CNP) and to determine risks factors for progression from acute to chronic pain in the setting of a burn center.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Phantom limb pain (PLP), the perception of pain in a limb no longer present, is a phenomenon affecting over 80% of amputees. Its prevalence induces severe pain and psychological distress causing a significant decline in the quality of life of amputees. PLP's complex interplay of peripheral and central mechanisms remains the leading cause for limited understanding and management of the condition. Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a multifactorial neuropathic disorder characterized by pain disproportionate to injury. We report a 58-year-old man with CRPS type II of the right lower extremity after traumatic nerve injury, diagnosed via Budapest criteria. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is an interventional treatment for painful vertebral compression fractures caused by osteoporosis and malignant diseases such as multiple myeloma and metastatic bone tumors. We present the first case of PVP performed on a man in his thirties with vertebral compression fractures secondary to acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Within the past decades, epidural steroid injections have been used in the treatment of severe low back pain and sciatica. In reviewing papers for this article an effort is made to concentrate on those that meet commonly accepted research design criteria, such as being blinded, randomized and prospective. Ten patients who had an internal rotation contracture and pain after an anterior repair for recurrent dislocation of the shoulder were treated by release of the subscapularis muscle. For six of the patients, radiographs demonstrated severe osteoarthrotic changes in the shoulder as well.
