Unveiling regions associated with acute and late breast side-effects from breast radiotherapy using voxel-wise image-based data mining analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Side-effects after breast cancer treatment, including radiotherapy (RT), can drastically affect a patient's quality of life. This study aims to identify anatomical regions where RT dose is related to breast side-effects using the voxel-wise image-based data mining (IBDM) technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of 922 patients included in the REQUITE study and who underwent RT after breast-conserving surgery were analysed. All patients were treated supine. We analysed breast pain, oedema, atrophy, induration, and nipple retraction, scored before and after RT by clinician

Butyrate-engineered yeast activates Nppa and Sgcg genes and reduces radiation-induced heart damage via the gut-heart axis.

Radiotherapy is a method of treating cancer through radiation aimed at killing cancer cells or inhibiting their growth. However, radiotherapy has numerous side effects because it kills tumors while causing damage to normal cells or tissues. The literature shows that radiation can cause damage to heart tissue. This study found that engineered yeast that produced butyrate can maintain small intestinal barrier function by recovering GPR109A to reduce intestinal damage caused by abdominal irradiation in mice. We unexpectedly found that engineered yeast could mitigate irradiation-induced heart dama

Quantifying the impact of bladder complications following gynecological cancer treatment: systematic review and meta-regression.

OBJECTIVE: Gynecological cancer treatments, including radiotherapy (RT) and chemotherapy, leads to various bladder complications. The anatomical proximity of the treatment site to the urinary bladder primarily explains the complications following RT, while chemotherapy contribute to bladder dysfunction through systemic mechanisms. This study systematically reviews the nature, extent, and prevalence of bladder complications among women treated for these malignancies, underscoring the influence of treatment modalities on bladder function. METHODS: A comprehensive search of databases including E

Acute and Late Radiation-Related Toxicity After Treatment of Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer With Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Compared With 3-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy in the RAPIDO Trial.

PURPOSE: Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) aims to lower radiation-related toxicity by delivering more conformal radiation therapy compared with 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT). This study investigated whether IMRT (including volumetric modulated arc therapy) resulted in less acute and late radiation-related toxicity and better treatment compliance compared with 3D-CRT in the phase 3 RAPIDO trial. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), treated with short-course radiation therapy followed by consolidation therapy (total neoadju

Evolving Role of PET Imaging in Assessing Vascular and Central Nervous System Complications of Radiation Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer.

Radiation therapy for head and neck cancer is a cornerstone of treatment but can come with significant and lasting complications. Reduced vascularity and fibrosis heighten the risks of stroke, infection, and diminished quality of life. Advances in imaging technologies, such as fluorodeoxyglucose PET and sodium fluoride-PET, have emerged as critical tools for diagnosing and monitoring vascular inflammation and calcification, enabling earlier interventions and improved patient management. This review examines the pathophysiology of RT-induced damage, with a focus on vascular and connective tissu

Whole Abdominal Pencil Beam Scanned Proton FLASH Increases Acute Lethality.

PURPOSE: Ultrahigh dose-rate FLASH radiation therapy has emerged as a modality that promises to reduce normal tissue toxicity while maintaining tumor control. Previous studies of gastrointestinal toxicity using passively scattered FLASH proton therapy (PRT) have, however, yielded mixed results, suggesting that the requirements for gastrointestinal sparing by FLASH are an open question. Furthermore, the more clinically relevant pencil beam scanned (PBS) FLASH PRT has not yet been assessed in this context, despite differences in the spatiotemporal dose-rate distributions compared with passively

Perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage as a rare delayed complication of radiation therapy in a patient with parotid basaloid squamous cell carcinoma.

In this case report, we address a rare entity of parotid cancer: basaloid squamous cell carcinoma, which was surgically unresectable and had thus far only been treated with radiation therapy. Following twenty years of continuous remission, our patient presented with an acute perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage. The cause of the acute perimesencephalic subarachnoid hemorrhage was a delayed complication of radiation therapy.

Consequences of hyposalivation in relation to cancer treatment and early management of radiation-induced caries: case reports.

Given the prevalence of head and neck carcinoma and the salivary changes induced by the oral side effects of radiotherapy, such patients are at higher risk/susceptibility of developing dental caries. Radiation-caries is often under-treated in patients undergoing cervicofacial radiotherapy, yet these lesions can increase the risk of osteoradionecrosis due to necessary subsequent dental extractions. Moreover, xerostomia is accompanied by difficulties with speech, chewing and swallowing. The prevention and/or early management of radiation-induced carious lesions is essential in preventing oral co
