Ocular thrombosis associated with antiphospholipid antibodies.

Four patients with isolated acute ocular ischemic syndromes also had circulating antiphospholipid antibodies. Two patients had vaso-occlusive retinopathy and two, anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (which was successive in one). Extensive clinical laboratory evaluation identified vascular risk factors in two patients. One patient had essential thrombocytosis, confirmed by bone marrow biopsy; the other had stable hypertension and a history of coronary artery disease. These cases suggest that small vessel thrombosis in situ may be a mechanism for antiphospholipid-associated ocular and cerebral i

Effect of photocoagulation on ocular blood flow.

The effect of panretinal photocoagulation on ocular blood flow was studied in pigmented rabbits by means of labeled microsphere impaction and in monkeys by indocyanine-green-dye clearance. In the rabbits, one eye of each animal was photocoagulated and the follow eye of the same animal was used as the control. Twenty-six rabbits received full-scatter panretinal photocoagulation (300 +/- 20 burns, one half burn apart) and an additional 32 rabbits received partial-scatter panretinal photocoagulation (150 +/- 20 burns, one burn apart). After full-scatter photocoagulation there was a significant de

[Visual complications of mitral leaflet prolapse (author's transl)].

Among ten patients with acute ischemic cerebral accident and mitral leaflet prolapse, two women presented with visual disturbances consistent with embolism in the ophthalmic or posterior cerebral circulation. These observations emphasize the importance of thorough cardiovascular assessment in all patients with acute cerebral or ocular ischemia, and we suggest that echocardiography should be part of routine investigation of such patients.

Choroidoretinal vascular anastomoses.

Three cases of choroidoretinal anastomosis had unusual etiologic and hemodynamic features. In two cases the anastomoses, one caused by ocular histoplasmosis and one by diabetic maculopathy, shunted retinal venous drainage into the choroid. In the third case, the congenital arterial choroidoretinal anastomosis should probably be termed retinochoroidal arteriovenous anastomosis. Prospective photographic and fluorangiographic studies of these patients suggest that our understanding of many basic features of retinal-choroidal circulatory hemodynamics is incomplete.

[The significance of ciliary circulation in the development of iris neovascularisation (author's transl)].

Three cases of peripapillary choroidal filling defects demonstrated by fluorescein angiography are presented. In two cases the defect was interpreted as an occlusion of a posterior ciliary artery. One of these patients had neovascularization of the iris and ischemia of the upper half of the retina. Later a contralateral hemiplegia developed. The other patient had no other known vascular disease of the eye except occlusion of the posterior ciliary artery by giant cell arteritis. One patient had underfilling of the peripapillary choroid which was interpreted as insufficiency of the ciliary circu

The value of retinal microvascular features in predicting risk stratification and long-term prognosis of patients with acute coronary syndrome.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the retinal blood flow characteristics in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) utilising Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). It aims to correlate these characteristics with Grace risk stratification and long-term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), while also examining the relationship between microvascular changes, risk stratification, and long-term prognosis in ACS patients. METHOD: 122 ACS patients (122 eyes) underwent coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI), with a

The Protective Effect of Topical PACAP38 in Retinal Morphology and Function of Type 2 Diabetic Retinopathy.

The continuously growing diabetes population is a significant concern with type 2 diabetic retinal disease (T2DRD), which is a leading cause of permanent blindness. However, the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of T2DRD has not yet been fully understood. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) was first isolated from the ovine hypothalamus based on its stimulating effect on the adenylate cyclase enzyme in anterior pituitary cells. PACAP38 (PACAP with 38 amino acids) activates anti-apoptotic pathways, inhibits pro-apoptotic signaling, and creates an anti-inflammatory e

A comprehensive monocentric ophthalmic study with Gaucher disease type 3 patients: vitreoretinal lesions, retinal atrophy and characterization of abnormal saccades.

BACKGROUND: The differentiation between Gaucher disease type 3 (GD3) and type 1 is challenging because pathognomonic neurologic symptoms may be subtle and develop at late stages. The ophthalmologist plays a crucial role in identifying the typical impairment of horizontal saccadic eye movements, followed by vertical ones. Little is known about further ocular involvement. The aim of this monocentric cohort study is to comprehensively describe the ophthalmological features of Gaucher disease type 3. We suggest recommendations for a set of useful ophthalmologic investigations for diagnosis and fol

[Multimodal Approaches for the Analysis of Retinal Functional Disorders―Focusing on Retinal Detachment].

Microstructural and functional restoration of the retina after reattaching a retinal detachment were assessed by electroretinography (ERG), optical coherence tomography (OCT), adaptive optics (AO) fundus imaging, and laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG). As a representative study, an intentional retinal detachment created during macular translocation surgery by a 360° retinotomy, reducing the cone ERGs by 12% was compared to the preoperation values. Six months after successful reattachment surgery, the amplitudes of the a- and b-waves of the focal macular ERGs (FMERGs) elicited by a 15° spot recove

A comprehensive review on automated diabetic retinopathy detection and classification using fundus image.

PURPOSE: Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a vision-threatening complication in diabetic patients. It harms retinal vessels and may lead to blindness. Detection at an early stage and its classification can prevent the risk of vision loss. However, fundus image-based manual screening of DR is a time-consuming and complex process. METHODS: In recent years, many automated techniques for DR detection have been developed to screen and diagnose the disease condition at an early stage. These techniques are explored using the keywords diabetic retinopathy, fundus image, ophthalmology with machine learning…

A hybrid approach for diabetic retinopathy stages classification using spatial and textural features.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a medical condition in which high blood sugar levels damage the retina's blood vessels. Existing Solutions for multi-class DR identification are computationally intensive and also suffer from low accuracy. There is an immense need for an automated, computationally efficient approach for monitoring DR progression in diabetic patients. The study proposed Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), Decision Tree (DT), and Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) models for the classification of retinal images into five DR classes (No, Mild, Moderate, Proliferate, and Severe) usin

Unraveling the effects of FLASH and conventional irradiation on retinal pigment epithelial cells: in vitro and in vivo studies.

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a fundamental monolayer of pigmented cells that supports visual function, situated between the neural retina and choroidal blood vessels. Radiotherapy is a common treatment for ocular tumors such as uveal melanoma; however, the RPE is inevitably exposed to radiation during treatment. FLASH radiotherapy, characterized by ultra-high dose-rates, has emerged as a promising approach to minimize normal tissue toxicity while maintaining tumor control. Despite its potential, few preclinical studies have explored the effects of FLASH irradiation on the RPE, and n
