Influencing factors of physical exercise behavior among Chinese female university students: a configurational analysis based on fsQCA.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates how combinations of factors lead to high physical activity levels among Chinese female university students. METHODS: Grounded in Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), we developed an "Individual-Behavior-Environment" triadic reciprocity framework. Using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), we performed a configurational analysis of physical activity behaviors among 115 Chinese female university students. The study assessed six antecedent conditions across three dimensions: capability cognition (exercise self-efficacy, perceived value of exercise), mo

Valproic acid triggers a sex-independent autism-like deficits, gut-brain axis, and neurodegenerative changes in the autism model of Wistar rats.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors. Its higher prevalence in males underscores the importance of understanding potential sex-specific differences. Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) is a widely used preclinical model to induce ASD-like traits in rodents; however, few studies have systematically compared neurobehavioral outcomes in both sexes. Here, we aimed to investigate sex-specific variations in developmental, behavioral, and physiologica…

Exploring self-regulation deficits in sensory over-responsivity disorder: A preschool comparative analysis.

Sensory Over-Responsivity Disorder (SORD) is characterized by extreme sensitivity to everyday sensory input, which can interfere with childr … r self-regulation was strongly associated with greater SORD severity, elevated ADHD symptoms, lower social interaction and increased emotional and sensory reactivity. These findings suggest that self-regulation difficulties are a core feature of SORD, even in the absence of comorbid psychiatric disorders. Early identification and interventions targeting self-regulat …

Spontaneous Calcium Transients Recorded from Striatal Astrocytes in a Preclinical Model of Autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is known as a group of neurodevelopmental conditions including stereotyped and repetitive behaviors, besides social and sensorimotor deficits. Anatomical and functional evidence indicates atypical maturation of the striatum. Astrocytes regulate the maturation and plasticity of synaptic circuits, and impaired calcium signaling is associated with repetitive behaviors and atypical social interaction. Spontaneous calcium transients (SCT) recorded in the striatal astrocytes of the rat were investigated in the preclinical model of ASD by prenatal exposure to valproic a…

Maternal prenatal lead levels and neonatal brain volumes: Testing moderations by maternal depressive symptoms and family income.

There is considerable evidence that prenatal lead exposure is detrimental to child cognitive and socio-emotional development. Further evidence suggests that the effects of prenatal lead on developmental outcomes may be conditional upon exposure to social stressors, such as maternal depression and low socioeconomic status. However, no studies have examined associations between these co-occurring stressors during pregnancy and neonatal brain volumes. Leveraging a sample of 101 mother-infant dyads followed beginning in mid-pregnancy, we examined the main effects of prenatal urinary lead levels on

Psilocybin increases emotional empathy in patients with major depression.

Empathy plays a crucial role in interpersonal relationships and mental health. It is decreased in a variety of psychiatric disorders including major depression. Psilocybin, a promising candidate for treating depression, has been shown to acutely increase emotional empathy in healthy volunteers. However, no study has investigated this effect and its relevance for symptom improvement in a clinical population. This study examines the enduring effects of psilocybin-assisted therapy on empathy in depressed patients using a randomized, placebo-controlled design. Fifty-one depressed patients were ran

Differential effects of adult attachment in cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic therapy in social anxiety disorder: A comparison between a self-rating and an observer rating.

Different measures of attachment are usually weakly correlated. In a subsample of an RCT comparing short-term cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic therapy (PDT), we examined the association between attachment and outcome using two attachment measures. The sample comprises 148 patients with social anxiety disorder who were treated in the SOPHO-NET trial. Pretreatment attachment was assessed using the Adult Attachment Prototype Rating (AAPR) and the Bielefeld Questionnaire of Client Expectations (BQCE). Regression models were used to predict the therapeutic alliance (HAQ) at ses

Theory of mind in users of anabolic androgenic steroids.

RATIONALE: Anabolic androgenic steroids are used to improve physical performance or increase lean muscle mass. About one-third of users develop a dependency syndrome, which is characterized by elevated rates of psychopathology, cognitive impairments, and aggressive and antisocial behaviors. The mechanisms behind these intra- and interpersonal problems are not known. OBJECTIVE: To examine theory of mind (ToM), i.e., the ability to infer the mental state of others, in users of anabolic androgenic steroids. Reduced ToM may be one factor underlying the interpersonal problems that have been report

An Uneasy Pleasure: Representing the Dangers of Skin-to-skin Contact in Eighteenth-century London 'The William Bynum Prize Essay'.

This article considers the social function of contagious disease as moderator of class relationships in England during the first half of the eighteenth century and takes into account the ways in which the 'communicability' of the plague, great pox (syphilis) and smallpox (variola) was used by authors to crystallise social interaction and tension along class lines. The essay begins by examining the representation of the plague, syphilis and smallpox in the medical tradition, before shifting its attention to the practice of maritime quarantine, as laid out by Richard Mead in his Short Discourse …

Camus's L'étranger and the first description of a man with Asperger's syndrome.

The continued discussion about the meaning of Camus's famous novel, L'étranger, provoked a re-reading, and this, in turn, led to its clinical analysis and further investigation. The book rests entirely on the thoughts, words and actions of its central character, Meursault, and these were found to show impairment of social relationships, communication and interaction, with other traits diagnostic of the Asperger's subgroup of the autism spectrum disorder. It was then found that Camus had based Meursault on his close friend Galindo, and a search was therefore made for evidence of Galindo's chara

Oxytocin and Eating Disorders: A Narrative Review on Emerging Findings and Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The hypothalamic neuropeptide oxytocin regulates reproductive behavior and mother-infant interaction, and conclusive studies in humans indicate that oxytocin is also a potent modulator of psychosocial function. Pilot experiments have yielded first evidence that this neuropeptide moreover influences eating behavior. METHODS: We briefly summarize currently available studies on the involvement of the oxytocin system in the pathophysiology of eating disorders, as well as on the effects of oxytocin administration in patients with these disorders. RESULTS: Brain administration of oxyto

Topiramate Combined with Cognitive Restructuring for the Treatment of Gambling Disorder: A Two-Center, Randomized, Double-Blind Clinical Trial.

Gambling disorder (GD) is a prevalent condition for which no pharmacological treatment has yet been approved, although there is evidence that topiramate can reduce impulsivity in GD and craving in various addictive behaviors. The goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of topiramate combined with cognitive restructuring for GD in a two-center, randomized, double-blind clinical trial. Participants were individuals seeking outpatient treatment for GD (n = 30), treated with either topiramate or placebo combined with a brief cognitive intervention, over a 12-week period, the dose o

Racial/ethnic subgroup differences in outcomes and acceptability of an Internet-delivered intervention for substance use disorders.

The Therapeutic Education System (TES), an Internet version of the Community Reinforcement Approach plus prize-based motivational incentives, is one of few empirically supported technology-based interventions. To date, however, there has not been a study exploring differences in substance use outcomes or acceptability of TES among racial/ethnic subgroups. This study uses data from a multisite (N = 10) effectiveness study of TES to explore whether race/ethnicity subgroups (White [n = 267], Black/African American [n = 112], and Hispanic/Latino [n = 55])moderate the effect of TES.
