Eye lens color: formation and function.

Aromatic amino acids are photooxidized by near-ultraviolet light to colored products that are bound very tightly to protein amino groups. The resulting colored proteins absorb near-ultraviolet light more strongly and are rendered more hydrophobic than the untreated compounds, and they fluoresce at 440 nanometers when excited at 360 nanometers. Coloration in the lenses of diurnally active animals (including man) may be caused by this reaction, and senile cataracts may result. Such changes in many other proteins (as in the skin and retina) could lead to more serious consequences.

Metal complexes of mycobactin P and of desferrisideramines.

Crystalline gallium mycobactin P and chromic mycobactin P have been prepared. The chromic compound, unlike other metallic complexes of mycobactin P, does not detectably exchange its metal with ferric iron; it competitively antagonizes the growth-promoting action of mycobactin P towards Mycobacterium johnei. Mycobactin P, desferrioxamine B and desferrichrysin form coloured 1:1 complexes with ammonium vanadate. The vanadyl complexes of the water-soluble desferrisideramines are formed in aqueous solution. Two distinct forms occur at pH7 and pH3; these are slowly interconvertible when the pH is ch

Structure-disrupting ions: detection of qualitative change in an enzyme.

Preparations of erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase from normal individuals show similar degrees of inhibition by neutral salts. Preparations from Caucasian subjects with different hereditary deficiency syndromes differ from each other and from normal subjects, indicating a qualitative difference in these specific "deficient" enzymes. Sensitivity to neutral salts may be a means of detecting an amino acid substitution.

Elevated carbon dioxide in exhaled breath induces false-positive DOB results during Helicobacter pylori detection with ¹³C-urea breath test using infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The urea breath test (UBT) detects Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) by measuring 13CO₂ in exhaled air after the ingestion of a 13C-urea metabolized by bacterial urease. However, the influence of CO₂ concentrations in exhaled breath on UBT results remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying exhaled CO₂ levels on the outcomes of infrared spectroscopy-based ¹³C-UBT. METHODS: Six volunteers confirmed to be H. pylori-negative via ¹³C-UBT and stool antigen assay were enrolled. All participants completed overnight fasting and oral rinsing before specimen collection

A green SPE sorbent based on butterfly pea anthocyanin extract immobilized on Amberlite XAD-1600N for Pb(II) determination by FAAS.

Lead contamination in seafood poses a significant risk to human health, necessitating reliable and environmentally sustainable analytical methods for routine Pb(II) monitoring. In this study, a sustainable solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was developed for the preconcentration and determination of Pb(II) using a bio-derived chelating resin prepared by immobilizing anthocyanins extracted from Clitoria ternatea (butterfly pea) flowers onto Amberlite XAD-1600N. Pb(II) retained on the functionalized resin was eluted and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Key operational

Unveiling Ciprofloxacin Protonation Isomers: an Integrated Approach with Mass Spectrometry, Ion Mobility Spectrometry and Infrared Ion Spectroscopy.

Ciprofloxacin is a widely studied fluoroquinolone antibiotic and serves here as a relevant test case for molecules exhibiting multiple protonation isomers (protomers) with abundances that vary depending on the ionization conditions using mass spectrometry (MS). Understanding the protonation behavior of such molecules during positive-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) or matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) is interesting from a perspective of fundamental ion chemistry, but also crucial in achieving efficient ionization, detection, and accurate identification in an analytical cont

Fecal iron quantification in a randomized controlled trial of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ATCC 202195 in newborns in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics may enhance host iron bioavailability, offering a strategy to address iron deficiency. Fecal iron may be a useful noninvasive biomarker of such effects in infants. OBJECTIVE: To examine the use of fecal iron quantification in a randomized placebo-controlled trial (RCT) of neonatal administration of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum ATCC 202195 (LP202195), with or without fructooligosaccharide (FOS), in Dhaka, Bangladesh. METHODS: Fecal iron quantification using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was optimized using standards and reference materials, and pilot-tested usin

The unusual formaldehyde-induced activation of [NiFe]-hydrogenase: Implications from protein film electrochemistry and infrared spectroscopy.

Here we investigate how formaldehyde (HCHO), a known strong inhibitor of [FeFe]‑hydrogenases and a mild inhibitor of [NiFe]‑hydrogenases, may exert more complex effects on this group of metalloenzymes, which reversibly catalyze the 2H+/H₂ reaction. We investigated the [NiFe]‑hydrogenase Hyd-2 from E. coli using protein film electrochemistry, a technique that enables the measurement of enzyme activity when the enzyme is adequately adsorbed on the electrode. The effect of HCHO on the electrocatalytic performance of Hyd-2 is highly dependent on the buffer pH and the direction of catalysis. During

Efficient encapsulation of a model drug in chitosan cathodic electrodeposition: Preliminary analysis using FTIR, UV-vis, and NMR spectroscopy.

This study investigates the preliminary efficacy of drug encapsulation in chitosan hydrogels by cathodic electrodeposition for the encapsulation of the aromatic dye methyl orange to enhance drug delivery in biological systems. Chitosan, a biocompatible and transparent polymer, is known for its ability to effectively encapsulate and transport therapeutic agents, which is critical for sustained and targeted drug release. Methyl orange was selected as a model drug to study the effects of deposition and immersion times on encapsulation efficiency. The effects of deposition and immersion times on e

L-cysteine mediated rapid separation of Hg2+ and MeHg+ by anion-exchange HPLC.

Owing to the on-going emission of Hg into the global environment, new insight into their bioinorganic chemistry in mammals is urgently required to better understand their adverse health effects and analytical methods to quantify Hg2+ and MeHg+ in environmental samples are needed. Analytical separations can help to address both of these needs. While Hg2+ and MeHg+ have been most frequently separated by cation and reversed-phase (RP) HPLC, we here report on using anion-exchange (AEX) HPLC in conjunction with a flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS) to observe the retention behavior of these
