Differential place and response learning in horses displaying an oral stereotypy.

Significant similarities exist between the neural and behavioural features of environmentally and drug-induced stereotypy. For example, exposure to dopamine agonists, such as amphetamine, induces stereotypy and causes alterations in midbrain neurophysiology similar to those observed following chronic stress. An additional behavioural feature of these neural changes in the drug-induced phenotype is an enhanced rate of switching from response-outcome (R-O) to stimulus-response (S-R) learning. The aim of the current experiment was to examine R-O and S-R learning in horses displaying environmental

Association of autistic spectrum disorders with dystrophinopathies.

Parents of 85 boys with dystrophinopathies and 51 sibling controls completed the Social Communication Questionnaire, describing child behaviors associated with autism spectrum disorders and a rating of parental stress. Twenty-one boys with dystrophinopathies and no siblings received scores above the cut-point for possible autistic spectrum disorders. Mothers of identified children were given detailed interviews using the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised, and 16 boys (about 19% of the sample) met the criteria for autism spectrum disorders. Significant qualitative abnormalities in reciprocal

The initiation of homeless youth into the street economy.

Homeless youth (HY) who lack employment in the formal economy typically turn to the street economy (e.g., prostitution, drug selling) for survival. Guided by the theory of social control, the present paper explores factors influencing HY's initiation into the street economy. Eighty HY (ages 15-23) were recruited from four community-based organizations. All participated in structured interviews and 25% participated in qualitative interviews. Almost all HY had participated in the street (81%) and formal economies (69%). Five main factors simultaneously influenced initiation into the street econo

An analysis of vocal stereotypy and therapist fading.

A functional analysis for a boy with Down syndrome and autism suggested that vocal stereotypy was maintained by automatic reinforcement. The analysis also showed that instructions and noncontingent attention suppressed vocal stereotypy. A treatment package consisting of noncontingent attention, contingent demands, and response cost effectively reduced vocal stereotypy. The treatment package remained effective even when noncontingent attention was removed, making the procedure easier to implement. Also, the presence of the therapist in the room with the participant was faded systematically. Aft

Behavioral and biochemical effects of amperozide and serotonin agents on nigrostriatal and mesolimbic dopamine systems.

Central dopaminergic system serves two major physiological functions, i.e., motivation activation and motor coordination. The evidence that serotonergic system could modulate these two pathways suggests that serotonin (5-HT) and related agents may possess potential therapeutic values against certain mental or motor disorders caused by dopamine malfunction. This study presents novel modulatory role for serotonergic agents in rat behaviors which have been speculated to be associated with forebrain dopamine system. Three serotonergic agents, including DOI (5-HT2 agonist), ritanserin (5-HT2 antago

Prefrontal cortex lesions cause only minor effects on the hyperlocomotion induced by MK-801 and its reversal by clozapine.

The non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801 elicits a behavioural syndrome in rodents characterized by hyperlocomotion and stereotypies, which is antagonized by antipsychotic drugs. NMDA receptor antagonists increase prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity in rodents, as assessed by electrophysiological and neurochemical measures. The increase in glutamate outflow induced by systemic MK-801 administration in the medial PFC (mPFC) is prevented by the local administration of clozapine (Clz). In the present study, we examine whether a PFC lesion alters the behavioural syndrome induced by MK-801

Waved-1 mutant mice are hypersensitive to the locomotor actions of cocaine.

Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGFalpha) is a well-known regulator of many developmental processes, and is expressed heavily in basal forebrain and striatal regions. When TGFalpha is reduced in Waved-1 (Wa-1) mutant mice, brain anatomy, biogenic amines, stress response, and behavior are normal prior to, but altered following puberty. As an initial screen for possible alterations in nigrostriatal and mesolimbic dopamine (DA) systems, we tested adult Wa-1 mutant mice in an open field, following acute injection with cocaine (15 mg/kg). Wa-1 mice exhibited significantly greater ambulatory dista

Taboo thoughts and doubt/checking: a refinement of the factor structure for obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms.

The purpose of this report was to improve upon earlier factor analyses of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptom categories by minimizing the heterogeneity in the aggressive obsessions category. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted on data from 293 adults with primary OCD. The resulting five factors (Symmetry/Ordering, Hoarding, Doubt/Checking, Contamination/Cleaning, and Taboo Thoughts) are phenomenologically more homogeneous than prior category-based factors and are consistent with those derived in previous item-level analyses.

Midline-shift corresponds to the amount of brain edema early after hemispheric stroke--an MRI study in rats.

Vasogenic brain edema formation is a serious complication in hemispheric stroke. Its space-occupying effect can lead to midline-shift (MLS), cerebral herniation, and death. Clinical studies indicate that quantification of MLS can predict cerebral herniation and subsequent death at early time-points, even before clinical deterioration becomes apparent. The present experimental study was designed to determine the relation between MLS, absolute edema volume, lesion size, and clinical findings in a rat stroke model. Middle cerebral artery-occlusion was performed in 24 rats using the suture techniq

The role of rumination, attentional biases and stress in psychological distress.

This experimental study examines the relationship between rumination and attentional bias. Additionally, the study aims to determine, within a diathesis-stress framework, whether rumination or attentional bias (or both) can prospectively predict psychological distress. Eighty-one participants completed selected measures of rumination and psychological distress at time one, in addition to experimental manipulations of rumination and mood, and measures of mood and attentional bias at time two. Seventy-three participants (90% follow-up) completed final measures of stress and psychological distres

The relationship between executive functioning, central coherence, and repetitive behaviors in the high-functioning autism spectrum.

This study examined the relationship between everyday repetitive behavior (primary symptoms of autism) and performance on neuropsychological tests of executive function and central coherence (secondary symptoms). It was hypothesized that the frequency and intensity of repetitive behavior would be positively correlated with laboratory measures of cognitive rigidity and weak central coherence. Participants included 19 individuals (ages 10-19) with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASD group) and 18 age- and IQ-matched typically developing controls (TD group). There was partial support

Random number generation during sleep deprivation: effects of caffeine on response maintenance and stereotypy.

Neurophysiological and functional imaging studies have demonstrated that frontal regions of the brain are particularly responsive to homeostatic sleep pressure. Previous neuropsychological studies indicate that sleep deprivation causes impairments in prefrontal cortical function. Random number generation (RNG) is thought to provide a sensitive index of executive functions that rely on the prefrontal cortex. The present study tested the hypothesis that sleep deprivation would impair RNG and that caffeine would mitigate this impairment. Healthy young men (n = 21) participated in two 40-h sleep d

Everyday sexism and posttraumatic stress disorder in women: a correlational study.

This study examined the correlations between everyday (nonviolent) sexism and the development of trauma symptoms in women. A total of 382 women completed a subjective measurement of the experience of sexism, a checklist of gender-based stressors (including acts of violence), a measurement of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and a demographic questionnaire. Results indicated a moderately strong relationship between the experience of everyday sexism and PTSD. A stepwise multiple regression revealed that when all variables (test scores, subscale scores, and demographic characteristics) were

[Diagnostic and etiopathogenic aspects of autism].

The Pervasive Developmental Disorders are a very complex and discussed subject both from a clinical point of view and about the etiopathogenesis. Different opinions have generated, in the past, different classification systems based on the underlying theoretical hypothesis. Nowadays the most popular classification systems are the ones contained in the DSM-IV and in the ICD-10. They define these diseases as "conditions characterized by a distortion of base development regarding verbal and non-verbal communication, the reciprocal and social ability of interaction and the imaginative activity." I

Effects of single and repeated phencyclidine administration on [3H]flunitrazepam binding in rat brain.

Repeated administration of phencyclidine (PCP) induces behavioral sensitization to dopaminergic neural transmission. This phenomenon has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Recently, GABAergic agonists have been shown to reduce behavioral activity induced by enhanced dopaminergic neural transmission, which is mediated by the GABA(A)/benzodiazepine (BZD) receptor complex. Thus, to investigate the role of BZD receptors during induction and expression of behavioral sensitization in PCP-sensitized animals, the effects of both single and repeated PCP administration on BZD recep

Rumination, mood and social problem-solving in major depression.

BACKGROUND: Ruminating when depressed is thought to lower mood and impair problem-solving, while distraction is thought to alleviate mood and assist problem-solving. The present study investigates each of these proposals using both naturally occurring and experimentally induced rumination and distraction in a sample of patients with major depression. METHOD: Thirty-six patients with major depression and 36 control participants were randomly allocated to either a rumination or distraction induction condition. Levels of trait rumination and distraction were measured at baseline, mood and proble

Lithuania mental health country profile.

As a part of international mental health policy, programmes and services project, the 'country profile' instrument was used for assessment of mental health policy and services in the Republic of Lithuania. Analysis of contextual factors revealed high levels of social pathology (including violence, suicide and other self-destructive behaviour) with stigmatizing approaches by the general population to mentally disturbed persons and other vulnerable groups. Analysis of existing data about resources invested in the mental health care system raises questions for policymakers about the effectiveness
