A new PAX8 mutation causing congenital hypothyroidism in three generations of a family is associated with abnormalities in the urogenital tract.

BACKGROUND: Although thyroid dysgenesis is the most common cause of congenital hypothyroidism (CH), its molecular basis remains largely elus … rmations, including incomplete horseshoe kidney, undescended testicles, hydrocele, and ureterocele. Strabismus was found in three out of six affected patients. No other somatic malformations were found. RESULTS: Direct sequencing of the PAX8 gene revealed a new heterozygous mutation (c.74C > G) in all affected individuals. This mutation leads to substitutio …

Neuronal responses in visual area V2 (V2) of macaque monkeys with strabismic amblyopia.

Amblyopia, a developmental disorder of spatial vision, is thought to result from a cascade of cortical deficits over several processing stages beginning at the primary visual cortex (V1). However, beyond V1, little is known about how cortical development limits the visual performance of amblyopic primates. We quantitatively analyzed the monocular and binocular responses of V1 and V2 neurons in a group of strabismic monkeys exhibiting varying depths of amblyopia. Unlike in V1, the relative effectiveness of the affected eye to drive V2 neurons was drastically reduced in the amblyopic monkeys. Th

Superior oblique tendon expansion with Achilles tendon allograft for treating Brown syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report the results of treatment of Brown syndrome using Achilles tendon allograft as a superior oblique tendon expander. METHODS: Achilles tendon allografts were prepared from the tissue bank. Five eyes of 3 patients with congenital Brown syndrome (mean age, 6 years) were enrolled in the study. Surgery was performed with a superotemporal conjunctival fornix approach. The superior oblique tendon was exposed and severed; then a 2- to 3-mm-wide strip of Achilles tendon (with a thickness of 1-2 mm) was trimmed and sutured between the cut ends using double-armed 5-0 Mersilene sutures.

Vertical and torsional correction in congenital superior oblique palsy by inferior oblique recession.

PURPOSE: Inferior oblique recession (Fink's technique) is one of various surgical procedures to manage congenital superior oblique muscle palsy. The authors aimed to determine the effectiveness of this operation in reducing vertical deviation and torsional deviation, and to assess the dose-effect relationship. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients presenting with unilateral congenital superior oblique palsy had an inferior oblique recession of 6 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm (16, 35, and 7 patients, respectively). Vertical deviation and torsional deviation were measured before and after surgery by means of the
