Vagus nerve stimulation reverses the extinction impairments in a model of PTSD with prolonged and repeated trauma.

We have shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) enhances extinction of conditioned fear and reduces anxiety in rat models of PTSD using moderate stress. However, it is still unclear if VNS can be effective in enhancing extinction of severe fear after prolonged and repeated trauma. Severe fear was induced in adult male rats by combining single prolonged stress (SPS) and protracted aversive conditioning (PAC). After SPS and PAC procedures, rats were implanted with stimulating cuff electrodes, exposed to five days of extinction training with or without VNS, and then tested for extinction retenti

Incidence and Persistence of Depression Among Women Living with and Without HIV in South Africa: A Longitudinal Study.

Depression and trauma are common among women living with HIV. This is the first study to track the longitudinal course of depression and examine the relationship between depression and trauma over time among women in South Africa. HIV-infected and uninfected women (N = 148) were assessed at baseline and one year later. Results of a path analysis show the multi-directional and entwined influence of early life stress, other life-threatening traumas across the lifespan, depression and PTSD over the course of HIV. We also observed higher rates of depressive symptomatology and more persistent cases

Daily stressors, trauma exposure, and mental health among stateless Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

The Rohingya of Myanmar are a severely persecuted minority who form one of the largest groups of stateless people; thousands of them reside in refugee camps in southeastern Bangladesh. There has been little research into the mental health consequences of persecution, war, and other historical trauma endured by the Rohingya; nor has the role of daily environmental stressors associated with continued displacement, statelessness, and life in the refugee camps, been thoroughly researched. This cross-sectional study examined: trauma history, daily environmental stressors, and mental health outcomes

Traumatic events and their relative PTSD burden in Northern Ireland: a consideration of the impact of the 'Troubles'.

PURPOSE: Over a 30-year period in its recent history, daily life in Northern Ireland (NI) was characterised by civil violence, colloquially termed as the 'Troubles'. The current report examines exposure to 29 traumatic event types and the associated conditional prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among the Northern Ireland population, with a focus on the impact of traumatic events that were characteristic of the NI 'Troubles'. METHOD: Results presented are based on analysis of data from the Northern Ireland Study of Health and Stress (NISHS). The NISHS is a representative epid

An experimental analogue study into the role of abstract thinking in trauma-related rumination.

Trauma-related rumination has been shown to predict the maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, it is still unclear how rumination can be distinguished from functional forms of thinking about traumatic events. The current study used an analogue design to experimentally test the hypothesis that the abstractness of thinking is responsible for the dysfunctional effects of trauma-related rumination. Eighty-three healthy university students first watched a distressing video and were then randomly assigned to abstract ruminative thinking, concrete thinking or distraction. Abstr

Acute stress and depression 3 days after vaginal delivery--observational, comparative study.

During the first month postpartum, 85% of women experience some form of mood disorders. The most common are: postpartum blues, non-psychotic postpartum depression, puerperal psychosis. Delivery of a child can be traumatic for some women. Several authors have found that women could get symptoms of one form of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after childbirth. However, etiology of established postpartum disorders is still unknown. The aim of this study is to detect symptoms of acute stress reaction and acute depressive state as a consequence of peripartal complications, as early as three day

The development of persistent pain and psychological morbidity after motor vehicle collision: integrating the potential role of stress response systems into a biopsychosocial model.

OBJECTIVES: Persistent pain and psychological sequelae are common after motor vehicle collision (MVC), but their etiology remains poorly understood. Such common sequelae include whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), fibromyalgia, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Increasing evidence suggests that these disorders share overlapping epidemiologic and clinical features. A model is proposed in which central neurobiological systems, including physiologic systems and neuroanatomical structures involved in the stress response, are an important substrate for the development of all 3 disorders an

Time does not heal all wounds: quality of life and psychological distress of people who survived the holocaust as children 55 years later.

The present study assessed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, psychological distress, and subjective quality of life (QoL) in a group of 43 child Holocaust survivors and a community sample of 44 persons who had not personally experienced the Holocaust. The participants were administered the PTSD-Scale, the SCL-90, and the WHOQOL-Bref. Results showed that the child survivors had higher PTSD symptom scores, higher depression, anxiety, somatization, and anger-hostility scores; and lower physical, psychological, and social QoL than did the comparison group. The findings suggest that th

Posttraumatic stress disorder among survivors of Cambodian concentration camps.

Thirteen Cambodian refugees who had survived 2-4 years of concentration camp experience met the DSM-III criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder. Their predominant symptoms were avoidance, hyperactive startle reactions, emotional numbness, intrusive thoughts, and nightmares, which had lasted at least 3 years after the imprisonment. The patients' avoidance of thoughts or discussion of the past and the shame they felt about Cambodia's history made diagnosis and treatment difficult. These findings give cross-cultural validation to the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder and should alert

Post-traumatic growth among pediatric transplant recipients and their caregivers: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric transplantation can be a stressful process for patients and caregivers. Some individuals may experience post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and post-traumatic growth (PTG) as a result. Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been well-studied in this population, the purpose of the present scoping review is to provide a first synthesis of the existing literature on PTG in pediatric transplant populations. METHODS: We conducted a literature search of PsycINFO and Scopus in May 2023. Eligible articles must have included a sample of solid organ transplant (SOT)

Peripartum Traumas and Mental Health Outcomes in a Low-Income Sample of NICU Mothers: A Call for Family-Centered, Trauma-Informed Care.

Postpartum depression (PPD), postpartum anxiety (PPA), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among birthing people have increased substantially, contributing to adverse maternal/infant dyad outcomes, with a high prevalence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Despite calls for trauma-informed care in the NICU and high rates of post-traumatic stress, little research has examined the rates of or the relationships between peripartum mood and adverse child experiences (ACEs) in NICU mothers or evaluated which peripartum traumas are most distressing. This study employed structural equati

Stress-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and myelin alterations in the hippocampus of PTSD rats.

Inflammatory and myelin changes may contribute to the pathophysiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The NOD-like receptor (NLR) family, pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), a brain inflammasome, is activated in the hippocampus of mice with PTSD. In other psychiatric disorders, NLRP3 expression has been associated with axonal myelination and demyelination. However, the association between NLRP3 and myelin in rats with PTSD remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between the NLRP3 inflammasome and myelin in the hippocampus of rats with PTSD.

Women Veterans' Stroke Risk Factors: Identified Prevention Methods and Knowledge Gaps.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a significant health burden for veterans and the fifth leading cause of death for women. Compared to civilian women, women veterans have significant multimorbid physical and mental health conditions contributing to their stroke risk. This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on the stroke risk factors specific to U.S. women veterans and identify any association between risk factors and a delay in prevention and treatment for women veterans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was approved by the organizational Institutional Review Board. The search strategy was ru

Post-traumatic stress in pregnant women with primary cytomegalovirus infection and risk of congenital infection in newborns.

BACKGROUND: Substantial evidence indicates that perinatal mental disturbances are associated with the risk for negative maternal-newborn outcomes. A neuroendocrine brain-placenta interaction has been described to explain the association between prenatal stress-related disorders and placental abnormalities. Whether these mechanisms may affect the likelihood of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of infections has never been investigated. AIMS: To evaluate the role of psychological factors in cytomegalovirus (CMV) MTCT in pregnant women with primary CMV infection. METHOD: A cohort of 276 pregn

Associations between psychological and trauma-related factors and urinary incontinence severity and treatment response among women veterans.

BACKGROUND: Psychological and trauma-related factors (ie, stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and military sexual trauma) may induce physiological responses that contribute to urinary incontinence. Women veterans are disproportionately affected by psychological and trauma-related factors, which may influence urinary incontinence severity and response to behavioral urinary incontinence treatment. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine associations between psychological and trauma-related factors and both urinary incontinence severity and response to behavioral urinary incontinence treatme

Sleep disturbances in anxiety disorders: State of the art and management.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric conditions globally, affecting up to one in four individuals over a lifetime. A strong and bidirectional relationship exists between anxiety and sleep disturbances: anxiety profoundly disrupts sleep, while poor sleep exacerbates psychological vulnerability, thereby exacerbating anxiety. This review provides a detailed exploration of how different anxiety disorders impact sleep and emphasizes the clinical importance of addressing both dimensions concurrently. This review demonstrates that sleep disturbances in anxiety disorders manifest heter

Childhood trauma differentially impacts depression and stress associations with reintegration challenges among post-9/11 U.S. veterans.

BACKGROUND: Post-9/11 veterans exhibit high prevalence of deployment stress, psychological conditions, and traumatic brain injury (TBI) which impact reintegration, especially among those with a history of interpersonal early life trauma (I-ELT). The relative importance of each risk factor is unclear. PURPOSE: We examined major deployment and clinical exposures of reintegration challenges among veterans with and without I-ELT. METHOD: We analyzed cross-sectional data of 155 post-9/11 veterans from the Translational Research Center for TBI and Stress Disorders study. FINDINGS: Depression seve

Association between therapists' negative beliefs about exposure therapy and its use in an Australian sample: a brief report.

Despite a wealth of research demonstrating the efficacy of exposure therapy for the anxiety and related disorders, research shows that few therapists use this technique in clinical practice. Negative beliefs about exposure therapy have been shown to be the most significant barrier to use or optimal use. A richer and more nuanced understanding of the relationship between negative beliefs and exposure use, and its implications for training and practice, is warranted. This research aimed to identify the specific negative beliefs about exposure held by Australian psychologists, and the association
