Is racism like other trauma exposures? Examining the unique mental health effects of racial/ethnic discrimination on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Although scholars have increasingly drawn attention to the potentially traumatic nature of racial/ethnic discrimination, diagnostic systems continue to omit these exposures from trauma definitions. This study contributes to this discussion by examining the co-occurrence of conventional forms of potentially traumatic experiences (PTEs) with in-person and online forms of racism-based potentially traumatic experiences (rPTEs) like racial/ethnic discrimination. Additionally, we investigated the unique association of rPTEs with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD),

CBT for pharmacotherapy non-remitters--a systematic review of a next-step strategy.

BACKGROUND: Non-remission rates to pharmacotherapy for anxiety disorders are related to higher relapse rates, decreased quality of life and greater functional impairment. Here we sought to investigate the efficacy of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) as a next-step strategy in the treatment of patients with anxiety disorders who did not remit after a pharmacological intervention. METHOD: We carried out a systematic review in the ISI, Pubmed and PsycINFO/PsychLit databases. Studies that did not use CBT and that did not focus on resistance to drug therapy were excluded. We considered resistant p

Differential diagnosis of psychiatric comorbidity in substance abusers.

The differential diagnosis of psychiatric comorbidity in substance abusers is important in order to provide effective pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments for the comorbid psychiatric disorders. Differential diagnosis of an underlying psychiatric disorder depends on the type of drug abused and the phase of abuse, ranging from acute intoxication to withdrawal. This review derives guidelines for differential diagnosis based on multiple examples of interactions between major psychiatric disorders and various abused drugs.

Greater reactivity to stressors as an indicator of service utilization and need in veteran women with sexual assault histories.

Veteran women with trauma histories are at greater risk for trauma-related psychopathology and continued stressor exposure. Given that services and resources for veterans are in high demand, it is imperative to identify factors relevant to veterans who are of high need and likely to engage with treatment. This study examined treatment utilization in veteran women who were more reactive (i.e., higher need) versus resilient (i.e., lower need) to stressors. Veteran women (n = 153) with sexual assault histories who took part in a randomized clinical trial were assessed three times over 4 months. S

The influence of mild traumatic brain injury on attentional Bias: Preliminary evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common neurological condition associated with attentional disruption and emotional vulnerability. Although attentional bias toward emotionally salient stimuli is implicated in depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), its role in individuals with a history of TBI remains poorly understood. This study examined whether TBI moderates the associations between attentional bias and (1) depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms, and (2) exposure to traumatic events meeting Criterion A for PTSD, defined as exposure to actual or threatene

Long-term mental health trajectories after the Great East Japan Earthquake: a systematic review.

Background: The Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) of 2011, compounded by the ensuing tsunami and Fukushima nuclear disaster, had profound impacts on the affected populations. While the immediate psychological consequences of the disaster have been well-documented, less is known about the long-term mental health trajectories of survivors. Objective: This systematic review aims to synthesize existing longitudinal studies to provide a comprehensive overview of long-term mental health outcomes following the GEJE.Methods: This review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Blunted brachial blood flow velocity response to acute mental stress in PTSD females.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Compared with males, females are twice as likely to develop PTSD after trauma exposure, and cardiovascular reactivity to stress is a known risk factor for CVD. We aimed to examine hemodynamic responses to acute mental stress in trauma-exposed females with and without a clinical diagnosis of PTSD. We hypothesized that females with PTSD would have higher heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and lower blood flow velocity (BFV) responsiveness compared with controls. We enrolled 21 females with PT

Avoidance learning as predictor of posttraumatic stress in firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Avoidance is a well-established maintenance factor in anxiety-related psychopathology. Individuals prone to anxiety show more maladaptive avoidance responses in conditioning paradigms aimed at avoidance learning, which indicates impairments in safety learning. To what extent avoidance learning is associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is still unclear, despite the logical relevance to the symptomatology. In this prospective study, we investigate avoidance learning responses in first responders, a population at high risk for traumatic exposure and thus PTSD development

Associations of subjective and objective stress responses with interpersonal trauma, PTSD, stress-induced drinking, and drinking to cope in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: To understand how interpersonal trauma (IPT), stress response, and drinking to cope converge to predict stress-induced drinking, a risk factor for alcohol use disorder. METHOD: Young adults with no substance use disorder were classified into three trauma history groups: (a) IPT with PTSD (n = 27), (b) IPT without PTSD (n = 35), and (c) Control (no trauma-history/no PTSD; n = 36). Participants completed a baseline assessment, including a structured clinical interview, to confirm PTSD diagnosis, followed by the Trier Social Stressor Task (TSST) and an alcohol use task. The intergenerational effects of Indian Residential Schools: implications for the concept of historical trauma.

The current paper reviews research that has explored the intergenerational effects of the Indian Residential School (IRS) system in Canada, in which Aboriginal children were forced to live at schools where various forms of neglect and abuse were common. Intergenerational IRS trauma continues to undermine the well-being of today's Aboriginal population, and having a familial history of IRS attendance has also been linked with more frequent contemporary stressor experiences and relatively greater effects of stressors on well-being. It is also suggested that familial IRS attendance across several

Acute stress reactions: can biological responses predict posttraumatic stress disorder?

What biological responses characterize those acute trauma reactions that develop into chronic psychiatric disorder? The need to understand the genesis of posttraumatic psychological disorders has resulted in much attention on biological reactions in the initial aftermath of trauma exposure. This review outlines the prevailing biological models of acute stress reaction and critiques the available evidence concerning biological responses to trauma that are associated with subsequent psychological disorder. The roles of peritraumatic dissociation and vulnerability factors for acute stress reactio

Neural correlates and plasticity of explicit emotion regulation following the experience of trauma.

Experiencing trauma or other adverse life events is highly prevalent and poses a significant risk for the development of mental disorders. Understanding the underlying mechanisms and neural processes involved in trauma processing is crucial for both prevention and targeting symptoms. Especially, difficulties in emotion regulation emerge as one key mechanism implicated in the development of conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following traumatic experiences. However, neural correlates of explicit emotion regulation among individuals who have undergone trauma have not receiv

Trajectories of grief-related psychopathology: A decade after the MH17 plane disaster.

Violent losses increase the risk for prolonged grief disorder (PGD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Little is known about the course of grief-related psychopathology in the long term. Hence, we examined their latent trajectories, overlap, and predictors to enhance our understanding of differential long-term responses to violent loss. MH17-bereaved people (N = 299) completed annual self-report measures from one to nine years post-loss. Prolonged grief (PG), posttraumatic stress (PTS), and major depression (MD) symptom trajectories were identified usin

A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Transdiagnostic Behavior Therapy and Disorder-Specific Psychotherapies in Veterans With Emotional Disorders.

Transdiagnostic psychotherapies have been gaining in popularity due in part to their hypothesized ability to address multiple emotional disorders via a single protocol. However, to date, most randomized clinical trials of these treatments have focused on patients with anxiety disorders, or in mixed samples, limiting their use in other diagnoses. The present study compared Transdiagnostic Behavior Therapy (TBT) to disorder-specific therapies (DSTs) in 304 veterans with principal diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or panic disorder. Disorder-speci

Child Maltreatment and Psychiatric Disorders Increase Risk for Stalking Victimization.

Stalking is a serious public health problem, estimated to affect about 15% of women and 6% of men. Victims of stalking have been reported to be at increased risk for psychological distress, depression, lowered social and daily functioning, and other forms of victimization. The present study sought to determine whether individuals with documented histories of childhood maltreatment and those with psychiatric disorders are at increased risk for stalking victimization. Participants included maltreated children and matched controls (N = 892) from a Midwestern, metropolitan area who were followed u

Ten years' data of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): A naturalistic, observational study outcome in clinical practice.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is used reliably as an alternative method in the treatment of a number of treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders. However, information about the daily practice is limited. In this article, we aim to report and discuss the 10-years results of a clinic that applies TMS to treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders. This naturalistic study is a retrospective review of data routinely collected from patients undergoing TMS between 2010 and 2020. A total of 284 patients with diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, general

Brief Mental Health Disorder Screening Questionnaires and Use with Public Safety Personnel: A Review.

Brief mental health disorder screening questionnaires (SQs) are used by psychiatrists, physicians, researchers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals and may provide an efficient method to guide clinicians to query symptom areas requiring further assessment. For example, annual screening has been used to help identify military personnel who may need help. Nearly half (44.5%) of Canadian public safety personnel (PSP) screen positive for one or more mental health disorder(s); as such, regular mental health screenings for PSP may be a valuable way to support mental health.
