Synthetic Cannabinoid-Related Deaths in England, 2012-2019.

Aim: To identify drug-related death trends associated with synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) reported to the National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths (NPSAD) from England. Design: Case reports from NPSAD (England) where a SCRA was detected in post-mortem tissue(s) and/or implicated in the death were extracted, analyzed, and compared against non-SCRA-related deaths that occurred over the same time period (2012-2019). Findings: One hundred sixty-five death SCRA-related reports were extracted, with 18 different SCRAs detected. Following the first death in 2012, a subsequent shar

The latent class structure of substance use in US adults 50 years and older.

OBJECTIVE: Substance use rates have increased in adults 50 years and older, and substance use in this population is associated with significant consequences. Given that little is known about their underlying substance use patterns, the objective was to identify latent classes of adults 50 years and older by past-year substance use, past-month substance use, and past-year substance use disorder (SUD) diagnosis. METHODS: The National Survey on Drug Use and Health is an annual nationwide cross-sectional U.S. survey. Participants were 35,229 civilian, non-institutionalized U.S. residents, 50 year

Homelessness and publicly funded substance use disorder treatment in California, 2016-2019: Analysis of treatment needs, level of care placement, and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Both homelessness and substance use have increased in recent years. People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are at increased risk for health problems and early mortality, both of which can be exacerbated by substance use disorders (SUD). Specialty SUD treatment is likely needed to address substance use among PEH, and more than 232,000 PEH received treatment from U.S. publicly funded SUD programs in 2015. The objective of this paper is to develop a better understanding of the SUD services that PEH receive in publicly funded treatment programs by (1) describing the characteristics a

Pharmacology of Drugs Used as Stimulants.

Psychostimulant, cardiovascular, and temperature actions of stimulants involve adrenergic (norepinephrine), dopaminergic (dopamine), and serotonergic (serotonin) pathways. Stimulants such as amphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), or mephedrone can act on the neuronal membrane monoamine transporters NET, DAT, and SERT and/or the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 to inhibit reuptake of neurotransmitter or cause release by reverse transport. Stimulants may have additional effects involving pre- and postsynaptic/junctional receptors for norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin and o

L-Type Calcium Channel Blockers: A Potential Novel Therapeutic Approach to Drug Dependence.

This review describes interactions between compounds, primarily dihydropyridines, that block L-type calcium channels and drugs that cause dependence, and the potential importance of these interactions. The main dependence-inducing drugs covered are alcohol, psychostimulants, opioids, and nicotine. In preclinical studies, L-type calcium channel blockers prevent or reduce important components of dependence on these drugs, particularly their reinforcing actions and the withdrawal syndromes. The channel blockers also reduce the development of tolerance and/or sensitization, and they have no intrin

Drugs and Drug Classes Involved in Overdose Deaths Among Females, United States: 1999-2017.

Background: Drug overdose deaths among U.S. women have risen steadily from 1999 to 2017, especially among certain ages. Various studies report involvement of drugs and drug classes in overdose deaths. Less is known, however, regarding the combinations that are most often indicated on death certificates, particularly among females. Analyzing mutually, exclusive drug/drug class combinations listed on death certificates of females are the objective of this study. Materials and Methods: Mortality data for U.S. female residents were obtained from the 1999 to 2017 National Vital Statistics System (n

Victimization, Substance Use, Depression, and Sexual Risk in Adolescent Males Who Have Sex with Males: A Syndemic Latent Profile Analysis.

Adolescent males who have sex with males (AMSM) are at increased risk of HIV/STI acquisition compared to other adolescents, making sexual risk behaviors in this population a priority public health focus. AMSM experience more victimization (including sexual/partner violence), depression, and substance abuse than their heterosexual counterparts; these may form a syndemic associated with risky sexual behavior. We pooled data from the 2015 and 2017 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, restricted to male students who reported a previous male sexual partner (n = 448). Latent profile analysis was used to iden

Poly-prescription drug misuse across the life course: Prevalence and correlates across different adult age cohorts in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Most research on prescription drug misuse (PDM) focuses on the misuse of specific classes of psychoactive prescription drugs among adolescents or young adults. The current research addressed important gaps in the literature by assessing poly-prescription drug misuse (poly-PDM), the misuse of more than one class of psychoactive prescription drug, across different adult age cohorts. METHODS: We used the 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to examine the prevalence of past-year poly-PDM and specific combinations of PDM. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identif

Mythological Bridge Between Intergenerational Transmission of Unmourned Loss and Addiction.

In a study looking at severe substance abuse in an inpatient clinic, an indirect relationship was found between narcissistic loss in substance abusers and the trauma that has not yet been mourned by their ancestors or parents. The authors explore these links using psychoanalytic theory, Greek mythology, and a case study to investigate how these concepts are implicated in the histories of those who struggle with drug addiction. Psychoanalysis has explored the relationship between object loss and ego development but, more recently, the concept of the intergenerational transmission of trauma has

Integration of an evidence-based tobacco cessation program into a substance use disorders program to enhance equity of treatment access for northern, rural, and remote communities.

Integrating tobacco cessation interventions into substance use disorder (SUD) programs is recommended, yet few are implemented into practice. This translational research implementation study was designed to integrate an evidence-based tobacco cessation intervention into a 2-week hospital outpatient SUD program that served a rural municipality and 33 remote Indigenous communities. Objectives included determining tobacco use prevalence, intervention uptake, and staffing resources required for intervention delivery. A series of 1-hr tobacco and health/well-being interactive education and behavior

Tobacco-free Workplace Program at a Substance Use Treatment Center.

Objectives: About 65%-87% of substance use disorder patients smoke cigarettes, compared to 14% of the general adult population. Few substance use treatment centers (SUTCs) have comprehensive tobacco-free workplace (TFW) policies or offer tobacco interventions. Taking Texas Tobacco Free (TTTF) implements an evidence-based TFW program in SUTCs, including at the Billy T. Cattan Recovery Outreach Center (BTC). We present a mixed methods case study of BTC's TTTF implementation, success factors, and challenges. Methods: TTTF provided policy development assistance, training, treatment resources, and

New psychoactive substance use as a survival strategy in rural marginalised communities in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: New psychoactive substance (NPS) use has become a widespread phenomenon among marginalised communities in Hungary. Since 2010, a growing number of reports in grey literature and anecdotal information among professionals have become available on NPS use among previously unaffected groups, such as people living in rural, socioeconomically deprived communities. In our research, we aimed to explore NPS use among these communities. METHODS: We conducted a mixed method research with convergent parallel design. Data collection took place in 2017 in marginalised communities in villages in

The effect of child-abuse on the behavioral problems in the children of the parents with substance use disorder: Presenting a model of structural equations.

Child abuse may potentially create the behavioral problems particularly in the children of parents with substance use disorder. Thus, the current study was conducted to investigate the effects of child abuse on the behavioral problems in the children of parents with substance use disorder using the emotional regulation and social skills as mediators. In this paper, the method of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was applied. The study population included 358 children of parents with substance use disorder whose parents had referred to the addiction treatment center in Kermanshah province, Ira

[Diabetes mellitus and illicit drugs].

Lifetime prevalence of illicit drug use is high in the Czech Republic (CR) - it reached 31.2 % of the population in the age group 15-64 years in 2017. Diabetes mellitus (DM) applies to 8.8 % of the Czech population. Risks of illicit drug use in diabetic patients are related both to their effect on glucose metabolism and to the lifestyle associated with illicit drug use, which might lead to worsened glycemic control and increased morbidity and mortality of the patients. Cannabis use, being the most common illicit drug use in the CR, presumably does not have a direct effect on glucose metabolism

Establishing preclinical withdrawal syndrome symptomatology following heroin self-administration in male and female rats.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a significant health problem, and understanding mechanisms of various aspects of OUD including drug use and withdrawal is important. Preclinical models provide an ideal opportunity to evaluate mechanisms underlying opioid withdrawal. Current models are limited by their reliance upon forced opioid administration, focus on the acute (and not protracted) syndrome, and exclusion of females. In this study, male and female rats self-administered heroin (maintenance dose of 12.5 μg/kg/infusion) and opioid withdrawal after abrupt discontinuation was measured. In Phase 1, a

Associations between Childhood Abuse and Chronic Pain in Adults with Substance Use Disorders.

Both childhood abuse and chronic pain are common in people with substance use disorders (SUDs). Studies have found that exposure to childhood abuse is associated with chronic pain in adulthood; however, few studies have examined this association in people with SUDs. Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the association between childhood abuse and chronic pain presence and severity in adults with SUDs. Methods: Data were obtained from 672 treatment-seeking participants with SUDs on an inpatient detoxification unit. Regression models evaluated whether childhood physical or sexual abuse wa

Children's Health in the Digital Age.

Environmental studies, metabolic research, and state of the art research in neurobiology point towards the reduced amount of natural day and sunlight exposure of the developing child, as a consequence of increasingly long hours spent indoors online, as the single unifying source of a whole set of health risks identified worldwide, as is made clear in this review of currently available literature. Over exposure to digital environments, from abuse to addiction, now concerns even the youngest (ages 0 to 2) and triggers, as argued on the basis of clear examples herein, a chain of interdependent ne

Anabolic-androgenic steroid use among women - A qualitative study on experiences of masculinizing, gonadal and sexual effects.

BACKGROUND: Female users of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are at risk of developing masculinizing side effects. This study explores how the development of masculinizing effects has been experienced and processed by women with current or previous AAS use. METHODS: Individual, semi-structured interviews were undertaken among 16 current or previous AAS-using women. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed. RESULTS: Almost all of the women were introduced to AAS and advised about what substance(s) to use, how much to use and how to use it by a trusted mal
