Vulnerability of the sympathetic trunk during the anterior approach to the lower cervical spine.

STUDY DESIGN: Anatomic dissection and measurements of the cervical sympathetic trunk relative to the medial border of the longus colli muscle and lateral angulation of the sympathetic trunk relative to the midline on both sides were performed. OBJECTIVE: To determine the course and location of the sympathetic trunk quantitatively and relate this to the vulnerability of the sympathetic trunk during the anterior approach to the lower cervical spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The sympathetic trunk is sometimes damaged during the anterior approach to lower cervical spine, resulting in Horner's

Altered sympathetic and vagal modulations of the cardiovascular system in patients with pheochromocytoma: their relations to orthostatic hypotension.

To examine sympathetic and vagal cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms in the pathogenesis of orthostatic hypotension in pheochromocytoma, we continuously monitored blood pressure (Finapres) and RR interval (electrocardiogram) in supine and standing positions in 12 patients with pheochromocytoma, 43 patients with essential hypertension, and 30 normotensive subjects. Mayer wave power spectrum of systolic blood pressure variability (approximately 0.1 Hz) and respiratory power spectrum of the RR interval variability (approximately 0.25 Hz) were taken as measures of sympathetic vascular and cardiac

Cold stress alters characteristics of sympathetic nerve discharge bursts.

Frequency-domain analyses were used to determine the effect of cold stress on the relationships between the discharge bursts of sympathetic nerve pairs, sympathetic and aortic depressor nerve pairs, and sympathetic and phrenic nerve pairs in chloralose-anesthetized, baroreceptor-innervated rats. Sympathetic nerve discharge (SND) was recorded from the renal, lumbar, splanchnic, and adrenal nerves during decreases in core body temperature from 38 to 30 degrees C. The following observations were made. 1) Hypothermia produced nonuniform changes in the level of activity in regionally selective symp

Sympathetic outflow to muscle in humans during short periods of microgravity produced by parabolic flight.

We have investigated the changes in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) from the tibial nerve during brief periods of microgravity (microG) for approximately 20 s produced by parabolic flight. MSNA was recorded microneurographically from 13 quietly seated human subjects with their knee joints extended in a jet aircraft simultaneously with the electrocardiogram, the blood pressure wave (measured with a Finapres), the respiration curve, and the thoracic fluid volume (measured by impedance plethysmography). During quiet and seated parabolic flight, MSNA was activated in hypergravity and was

Sympathetic skin response in myelopathies.

Autonomic dysfunctions cause significant morbidity and mortality among patients with spinal cord disorders. Sympathetic skin response (SSR), a simple, noninvasive electrophysiological technique, may be useful for assessing sympathetic functions in patients with myelopathies. Our aim was to study SSR in patients with myelopathy and correlate it with clinical features, severity of the impairment, somatosensory evoked potentials. and outcome. Thirty patients (15 men, 15 women) 12 to 60 years old with myelopathies of different etiology were studied. Subjects with clinical, electrophysiologic, or r

Autonomic imbalance in preeclampsia: evidence for increased sympathetic tone in response to the supine-pressor test.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether an increase in sympathetic nervous tone contributes to the augmented response to cardiovascular reflex testing in preeclamptic women. METHODS: Maternal electrocardiograms were recorded from 11 nonpregnant women and 25 normotensive and 15 preeclamptic nulliparous women at term, during periods of quiet respiration in the left-lateral position and after shifting to the supine position. Power spectral analysis was applied to epochs of 512 consecutive beat-to-beat intervals to determine the contribution of sympathetic tone, parasympathetic tone, and respiratory sinus

[The function of the cholinergic and sympathoadrenal systems in miners with long-term exposure to manganese oxides].

Long-term exposure to manganese oxides (MO) exceeding MPL leads at first to adaptation strain such as an increase in the activity of acetyl chlonesterase and correspondingly a decline in acetylcholine; greater excretion of catecholamin precursors with subsequent depletion of adaptive mechanisms. Under exposure to manganese concentration of 5.9 to 16.3 mg/m3, the adaptation exhaustion reactions in the sympathoadrenal system (SAS) and the cholinergic system (ChS) develop 7 to 9 years earlier than with 0.4-2.8 mg/m3 of MO. Moreover, ChS responds sooner than SAS to manganese exposure--about ten ye

Outcome of selective ramisectomy for botulinum toxin resistant torticollis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the long term outcome of selective ramisectomy denervation in patients with botulinum toxin resistant spasmodic torticollis. BACKGROUND: The published surgical series of ramisectomy treatment for torticollis do not provide systematic information on patients who develop resistance to the current standard of treatment-botulium toxin injections. Moreover, there is little information on surgical outcome using rating scale measurements of torticollis, or assessments of functional and occupational capacity. METHODS: Using a structured interview format and videotape assess

Epidural anesthesia enhances sympathetic nerve activity in the unanesthetized segments in cats.

To evaluate compensatory sympathetic excitation during epidural anesthesia, we measured cardiac and renal sympathetic nerve activity during thoracic or lumbar epidural anesthesia in cats. Thirteen cats were divided into three groups: five cats received thoracic epidural anesthesia, five received lumbar epidural anesthesia, and three received lumbar epidural anesthesia after the carotid sinus and vagoaortic nerves were severed (denervated lumbar group). Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and cardiac and renal sympathetic nerve activity were measured repeatedly after administration o

Morphine microinjected into the nucleus tractus solitarius and rostral ventrolateral medullary nucleus enhances somatosympathetic A- and C- reflexes in anesthetized rats.

The modulatory effects of morphine microinjected into localized areas of the brainstem on somatosympathetic A- and C-reflexes were examined in urethane-anesthetized rats. Somatosympathetic A- and C-reflexes were elicited in a branch of the inferior cardiac nerve by electrical stimulation of myelinated (A) and unmyelinated (C) afferent fibers in the tibial nerve. Morphine (0.002-0.2 microgram/50 nl) was microinjected into the rostral, intermediate and caudal parts of the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), the rostral ventrolateral medullary nucleus (RVLM), the caudal ventrolateral medullary nucl

Role of sympathetic cardiovascular tone in control of arterial pressure in rats with cirrhosis.

Although an increase in sympathetic nervous activity has been recognized in cirrhosis, the contribution of this overactivity to the regulation of arterial pressure is unknown. The arterial pressure response to increasing doses of hexamethonium (0.05 to 3.2 mg.kg-1.min-1), a ganglionic blocker that decreases sympathetic cardiovascular tone, was explored in normal rats and in two models of portal hypertension, i.e., rats with cirrhosis and rats with portal vein stenosis. Changes in plasma norepinephrine concentrations were greater in rats with cirrhosis (356 +/- 50 vs 166 +/- 30 pg/ml, p = 0.04)

Carbohydrates play a role in neurite outgrowth in vivo during development and regeneration.

We have used the alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, castanospermine, to investigate the possible involvement of N-linked glycosylation in the process of neurite outgrowth both during the development and regeneration of sympathetic nerve fibres into the iris of the rat. The effects on nerve growth were assessed qualitatively using catecholamine histochemistry and quantitatively by measuring the uptake of [3H]noradrenaline. Castanospermine was injected during the first, second or third postnatal week or during the second to fourth week after degeneration of adrenergic nerve terminals with the neurotox

Adrenaline-responsive electromechanical dissociation.

Electromechanical dissociation (EMD) occurs when there is no detectable blood pressure in the presence of organised electrocardiographic activity. This condition excludes pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and traditionally was thought to result from a failure of electrical depolarisation in the myocardium to elicit mechanical contraction. It is now understood from echocardiographic evidence that 'pseudo-EMD' is more common-where electrical activity is associated with myocardial contractions too weak to sustain a detectable blood pressure [1]. Three cases of EMD in association with subarachnoi

The effects of acidosis and alkalosis on long bone vascular resistance.

This study used an ex vivo perfusion model to investigate the direct effects of acidosis and alkalosis on the vascular resistance of the canine tibia. Baseline vascular resistance (BVR) and the vascular smooth muscle response to bolus doses of norepinephrine (NE) (0.025-3.2 nmol) and periarterial sympathetic nerve stimulation (NS) (10-25 Hz: 9 V, 2 ms pulses, 10 s) were studied. In Group I, these parameters were measured at normal pH (duration 7.34-7.44) and then during acidosis (pH 7.2-7.33). In Group II, they were measured at normal pH and then during alkalosis (pH 7.47-7.58). In Group III (

Relative contribution of nervous system and hormones to CNS-mediated hyperglycemia is determined by the neurochemical specificity in the brain.

To determine whether CNS regulatory pathways are organized so that differential sympathetic outflow patterns occur in response to stress, we injected various doses of neostigmine or bombesin into the third cerebral ventricle of fed rats, and then measured the hepatic venous plasma concentrations of glucose, glucagon, insulin, and epinephrine. The following four groups of rats were studied. Group 1 was intact rats. Group 2 comprised intact rats receiving the constant infusion of a) somatostatin to inhibit the endogenous secretion of insulin and glucagon, and b) insulin to maintain the plasma in

Development and persistence of catecholaminergic neurons in cultured explants of fetal murine vagus nerves and bowel.

Transient catecholaminergic (TC) cells have been found to appear in the vagal pathway and bowel of fetal mice and rats. It has been proposed that these cells are migrating vagal crest-derived precursors of enteric neurons that lose their catecholaminergic properties when they terminally differentiate. In the current experiments, segments of fetal mouse gut were explanted before (day E9) TC cells or any neural markers could be detected in situ. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive neurons developed in vitro in 4/12 such explants; therefore, cells with a catecholaminergic potential are prese

[Serial assessment of denervated but viable myocardium following acute myocardial infarction by using 123I-MIBG and 201TlCl myocardial SPECT].

123I-MIBG is taken up by sympathetic nerve ending and provides a scintigraphic image of myocardial sympathetic innervation. We investigated the scintigraphic detection of denervated but viable myocardium following acute myocardial infarction by serial 123I-MIBG and 201TlCl myocardial SPECT. Fourteen patients were studied at acute (10 +/- 2 days) and chronic stage (86 +/- 10 days). Simultaneous dual SPECT was carried out after IV administration of 111 MBq (3 mCi) of 201TlCl and 123I-MIBG. The defect size of 123I-MIBG and 201TlCl were compared visually by using Bull's eye display generated from

Evidence that intravenous morphine stimulates central opiate receptors to increase sympatho-adrenal outflow and cause hypertension in conscious rabbits.

1. In conscious rabbits, intravenous morphine caused hypertension, bradycardia, hyperglycaemia and increased plasma adrenaline and noradrenaline. These effects were prevented by ganglionic blockade with pentolinium. 2. The cardiovascular responses to morphine were not altered by pretreatment with a vasopressin V1-receptor antagonist. 3. After bilateral adrenalectomy morphine caused a similar rise in noradrenaline but no increase in adrenaline. The rise in blood pressure was attenuated and the hyperglycaemia was abolished. 4. Adrenaline infused intravenously to mimic the levels that occurred af

[Effect of the sympathetic activation and its inhibition on left ventricular mechanics in mitral prolapse. Echocardiographic study in 35 patients].

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is characterized by arrhythmias, atypical anginal chest pain and left ventricular (LV) wall motion abnormalities. The role of autonomic nervous system (ANS) as the origin of these disturbances is still debated. The aim of the study was to determine the possible interference between left ventricle (LV) mechanics and ANS. 35 consecutive patients with MVP (24 female, 11 male) (mean age 30 +/- 9 years), matched with a homogeneous control group, were examined by means of 2D-Echo during resting conditions and during sympathetic activation induced by passive orthostatism (
