Heart failure (HF) patients show brain injury in autonomic, affective, and cognitive sites, which can change resting-state functional connectivity (FC), potentially altering overall functional brain network organization. However, the status of such connectivity or functional organization is unknown in HF. Determination of that status was the aim here, and we examined region-to-region FC and brain network topological properties across the whole-brain in 27 HF patients compared to 53 controls with resting-state functional MRI procedures. Decreased FC in HF appeared between the caudate and cerebe

Cerebral small vessel disease is a major cause of stroke and vascular dementia; however, the pathogenesis is largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the impairment of dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) in lacunar infarction patients. Seventy-one lacunar infarction patients were enrolled in the study, including 46 unilateral middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory stroke patients and 25 unilateral posterior cerebral artery (PCA) territory stroke patients. Each group of patients was randomly divided into two subgroups. Group 1 underwent dCA assessments in the bil

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) are at enhanced risk of developing alcohol or other substance use disorders relative to those with no family history (FH-). Alcoholics and FH+ subjects have greater interference scores on the Stroop color-word task, suggesting these impairments may be a component of the cognitive phenotype of at-risk individuals.
METHODS: In this study, we examined whole-brain activations in 24 FH+ and 28 FH- young adults performing the counting Stroop task, a variant of the Stroop task adapted for neuroimaging studies.
RESULTS: Across all sub

The early detection of major depression in elderly individuals who are at risk of developing the disease is of prime importance when it comes to the prevention of geriatric depression. We used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine changes in regional homogeneity (ReHo) of spontaneous activity in late-life subthreshold depression (StD), and we evaluated the sensitivity/specificity performance of these changes. Nineteen elderly individuals with StD and 18 elderly controls underwent a resting-state fMRI scan. The ReHo approach was employed to examine whether StD wa

PURPOSE: Construction of a canine retinal custom cDNA microarray for comprehensive retinal gene expression profiling and application for the identification of genes that are preferentially expressed in the retina and brain lobes using a brain pool reference tissue.
METHODS: A cDNA microarray was constructed utilizing clones obtained from a normalized canine retinal expressed sequence tag library. Gene expression profiles were analyzed for normal retina, as well as the cortex of the frontal, occipital, and temporal brain regions. Each sample was studied against a reference sample of pooled bra

Intraoperative electrical stimulation, which temporarily inactivates restricted regions during brain surgery, can map cognitive functions in humans with spatiotemporal resolution unmatched by other methods. Using this technique, we found that stimulation of the right inferior parietal lobule or the caudal superior temporal gyrus, but not of its rostral portion, determined rightward deviations on line bisection. However, the strongest shifts occurred with subcortical stimulation. Fiber tracking identified the stimulated site as a section of the superior occipitofrontal fasciculus, a poorly know

Results from recent neuroimaging studies have led to a controversy as to whether right or left prefrontal regions are relatively more important for episodic retrieval. To address this issue, we recorded event-related brain potentials during two recognition tests with identical stimuli but differing retrieval demands. In both tests, participants viewed a sequence of object drawings, half of which were identical to ones viewed earlier except for a change in size and half of which were new. Instructions were to discriminate between old and new objects (general test) or to additionally decide whet

To investigate the neural substrates for naming objects and their category-dependency, we performed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with naming of animals and tools. Naming objects, irrespective of their category, activated left frontal to bilateral parietal regions and occipital to posterior temporal regions. Within these areas, naming animals caused more activation of the primary visual cortex bilaterally and the ventral occipital cortex to the inferior temporal area on the right side. Naming tools caused more activation of the posterior part of the left middle temporal area, th

We describe a case of fluctuating ataxia in a 37-year-old man. Workup demonstrated multiple brainstem and cerebellar lesions, cerebellar atrophy, and CSF lymphocytic pleocytosis with oligoclonal bands. Ten months after symptom onset, the patient developed a mesial temporal lobe abnormality and had a first-time seizure, prompting additional workup that revealed a diagnosis.

Fronto-temporal dementia, also known as fronto-temporal lobular degeneration, is the second most common form of early-onset dementia with a prevalence equal to Alzheimer's dementia. Behavioural variant fronto-temporal dementia primarily involves the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Myelination of nerve fibres in these areas allow for highly synchronized action potential timing. Diagnosis is often significantly delayed because symptoms are insidious and appear as personality and behavioural changes such as lack of inhibition, apathy, depression, and being socially inappropriate rather t…

A 60-year-old woman with a history of intermittent headaches and frequent seizures for 30 years presented with a massive intracranial hematoma in the left medial temporal lobe with thick subarachnoid hemorrhage. She had been treated with anticonvulsant medication under a diagnosis of left mesial temporal sclerosis based on magnetic resonance imaging findings. Cerebral angiography on admission revealed occlusion of the P(2) segment of the left posterior cerebral artery (PCA) and extravasation of contrast medium during the procedure. The patient underwent left temporal lobectomy including the le…

OBJECTIVE: Ictal and post ictal central apnoea (ICA and PCA) are driven by suppression of brainstem respiratory drive and represent an electroclinical biomarker of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). While animal models have demonstrated a true 'atonic diaphragm' underlying seizure-related apnoea, no human polygraphic study has yet confirmed respiratory muscle 'atonia' with direct EMG recording.
METHODS: In this case report, we present a 26-year-old female with meningoencephalocele-associated temporal lobe epilepsy who underwent a video-EEG polygraphy integrated with surface EMG from…

Temporal lobe epilepsy is associated with aberrant neurogenesis and ectopic migration of adult-born granule cells (abGCs), yet the molecular mechanisms driving these changes remain poorly defined. Using a pilocarpine-induced mouse model of temporal lobe epilepsy and chemogenetic silencing of abGCs via Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs), we previously demonstrated that abGC inhibition reduces both ectopic migration and seizure susceptibility. To identify underlying molecular regulators, we performed RNA sequencing of FACS-isolated abGCs and identified Rrm2 and …

BACKGROUND: Postsurgical distant metastasis of intracranial solitary fibrous tumors (ISFTs) is not uncommon and often leads to poor prognosis. However, presurgical distant metastasis has not been previously reported.
OBSERVATIONS: This case details a male patient who presented with seizures at age 26 years. Diagnosed with a space-occupying lesion in the right temporal lobe, suspected to be a meningioma, he underwent Gamma Knife treatment. Seven years later, MRI revealed slight growth of the lesion, leading to another Gamma Knife procedure. At age 40 years, the patient developed a tumor on the…

Understanding the goal of an observed action requires computing representations that are invariant to specific instantiations of the action. For example, we can accurately infer the goal of an action even when the agent's desired outcome is not achieved. Observing actions consistently recruits a set of frontoparietal and posterior temporal regions, often labeled the "action observation network." While progress has been made in charting which regions of the action observation network are involved in understanding goals of observed actions, it is not clear where goals are represented independent

[Proposal] Here, we retrospectively evaluate risk factors for radiation necrosis and local recurrence after PBT for skull base chordoma or chondrosarcoma. [Patients and Methods] We analyzed 101 patients who received PBT for skull base chordomas and chondrosarcomas from January 1989 to February 2021. Multivariable logistic regression models were applied for local recurrence, temporal lobe radiation necrosis rates, and temporal lobe radiation necrosis. [Results] In multivariate analysis, chordoma and large tumor size were independent significant factors for local recurrence. The 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- a…

Inoculation with the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus infection-19 (COVID-19) vaccine (BNT162b2) has been approved in Korea. Although it is generally safe, several possible side effects have been reported. The present report describes a 28-year-old woman who developed an intracerebral hemorrhage in her right temporal lobe after the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The patient complained of a persistent headache for four days after the first dose, along with right third nerve palsy and drowsiness. Non-enhanced brain computed tomography confirmed a 5.0 × 3.7 × 5.0 cm3-sized intracr…
