Considering antimicrobial resistance problem, marine microorganisms with the bioactivity against multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens have attracted many scientific interests. To address this issue, a total of 21 marine actinomycetes isolated from the Caspian Sea have been screened out. Primary screening via cross-streak method revealed that 3 strains: MN2, MN39, and MN40 produce antimicrobial agents with wide spectrum activity. In the second step, the potent strains were characterized morphologically, and then identified genetically using 16S rRNA analysis. After that, the bioactivity of the

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of both community- and hospital-acquired infections that are increasingly antibiotic resistant. The emergence of S. aureus resistance to even last-line antibiotics heightens the need for the development of new drugs with novel targets. We generated a highly saturated transposon insertion mutant library in the genome of S. aureus and used Tn-seq analysis to probe the entire genome, with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity, for genes of importance in infection. We further identified genes contributing to fitness in various infected compar

BACKGROUND: The potential need for re-evaluation of guidelines on surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis (AMP) in an era of advancing antimicrobial resistance is a matter of a considerable controversy.
METHOD: Review of the pertinent literature.
RESULTS: Over the last decade, the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has increased significantly, as illustrated by several surveillance studies. The blending of community acquisition and long-term carriage may increase the probability of unrecognized MRSA carriers being admitted to the hospital. Thus, MRSA is considered a

An optimum antimicrobial regimen for bacterial infection after orthotopic liver transplantation has not been identified. In this prospective 4 year study of patients undergoing liver transplantation, patients were randomized to receive either piperacillin-tazobactam (112 patient episodes) or ciprofloxacin plus amoxicillin (105 patient episodes) for empirical treatment of infective episodes in the first 3 months after transplant. Metronidazole was added to the ciprofloxacin-amoxicillin regimen where anaerobic infection was suspected. Patient groups were comparable with respect to clinical, bioc
