Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome in children.

The solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is an unusual disorder in childhood. Although well recognized in adult literature, the pediatric experience with this condition is limited, so SRUS often goes unrecognized or misdiagnosed. There are very few pediatric case reports in the English literature. This report describes four patients who presented with rectal bleeding, constipation, mucous discharge, and lower abdominal pain, with a diagnosis of SRUS. The diagnosis was made by rectoscopy, defecogram, anorectal manometry and histopathological evaluation. In two patients, defecogram showed a rec

Porphobilinogen deaminase deficiency in mice causes a neuropathy resembling that of human hepatic porphyria.

Acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) is a human disease resulting from a dominantly inherited partial deficiency of the heme biosynthetic enzyme, porphobilinogen deaminase (PBGD). The frequency of the trait for AIP is 1/10,000 in most populations, but may be markedly higher (1/500) in psychiatric patients. The clinical expression of the disease is characterized by acute, life-threatening attacks of 'porphyric neuropathy' that include abdominal pain, motor and sensory neurological deficits and psychiatric symptoms. Attacks are frequently precipitated by drugs, alcohol and low caloric intake. Iden

Effects of Yersinia enterocolitica infection on growth of the body and internal organs in newborn colostrum-deprived piglets.

Yersinia enterocolitica enteritis in newborn, colostrum-deprived piglets fed a human milk formula caused a reduced milk intake and decreased gain in weight but not length of the body. In infected piglets, the weight of the liver was less than in controls but other abdominal organs were unaffected. The weight of the caecum and small intestinal muscle were greater, but the length and weight of the small intestine and colon were not different. In infected piglets, the RNA concentration of the small intestinal mucosa was elevated whereas the concentrations of DNA and protein were unchanged, and to

Orbital lymphoma associated with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).

A new case of AIDS-associated, small noncleaved cell (Burkitt's) lymphoma that presented as an orbital mass is described. Extraocular muscle involvement was documented by computed tomography and confirmed by orbital biopsy. Extensive abdominal involvement was subsequently diagnosed and this caused the patient's death only 15 days after the initial consultation and orbital biopsy. A literature review discloses only eight previous case reports of AIDS-associated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) involving the orbit: two cases of Burkitt's type and six cases of large cell immunoblastic type. Three add

Prolonged impairment of cell-mediated immunity after major abdominal surgery in malnourished patients.

The effect of the nutritional status on postoperative impairment of the immune response was studied in adults undergoing major abdominal surgery. The immune function was evaluated by measuring in vitro the lymphocytic response to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), concanavalin A (Con A) and the purified protein derivative of tuberculin (PPD) in whole blood cultures, and in vivo delayed skin hypersensitivity to candida, mumps, streptokinase-streptodornase and PPD. Nutritional assessment was carried out by evaluating recent weight loss, the weight for height index and by measuring the arm muscle circumf

The association between skeletal muscle measures and chemotherapy-induced toxicity in non-small cell lung cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced toxicities frequently occur in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy. Low skeletal muscle mass (SMM) has been associated with a higher incidence of toxicities for several types of cancers and cytostatics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between skeletal muscle measures and chemotherapy-induced toxicity in a large cohort of NSCLC patients. METHODS: A multicentre prospective follow-up study (PGxLUNG, NTR number NL5373610015) in NSCLC patients was conducted. Included were patients diagnosed with

Levo-Tetrahydropalmatine Attenuates Progression of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in an Elastase Perfusion Rat Model via Suppression of Matrix Metalloproteinase and Monocyte Chemotactic Protein-1.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND Levo-tetrahydropalmatine (L-THP) is a tetrahydro protoberberine isoquinoline alkaloid obtained from the genera Stephania and Corydalis. In the present research, we evaluated the effects of L-THP on the progression of aortic aneurysms (AAs) in experimental rats induced with perfusion of elastase. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into sham-operated, control, and L-THP treated groups (n=12 in each group). The rats in the control group and the L-THP group received intra-aortic perfusion of elastase to induce AAs; the sham-operated group received perfusion

Using CT imaging to identify sarcopenia as a risk factor for severe falls in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a skeletal muscle disease primarily associated with ageing and progressive muscle decline and increases the risk of falls. The purpose of the present study was to investigate risk factors, including sarcopenia, for severe falls compared to non-severe falls. In addition, we wanted to explore possible associations between sarcopenia, bone mineral density (BMD), adipose tissue as well as clinical scores assessing frailty, nutritional status, and fall risk. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 101 older patients that had experienced a fall incident during in

Body composition measurements and clinical outcomes in patients with resectable pancreatic adenocarcinoma - analysis from SWOG S1505.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenic obesity and muscle attenuation have been associated with survival in patients with borderline resectable and advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA); however, these relationships are unknown for patients with resectable PDA. This study examined the associations between skeletal muscle and adipose tissue as measured on baseline computed tomography (CT) and the overall survival (OS) of participants with resectable PDA in a secondary analysis of the Southwest Oncology Group S1505 clinical trial (identifier: NCT02562716). METHODS: The S1505 phase II clinical trial e

The relationship between skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease subtypes in middle-aged and elderly population: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that decreased muscle mass combined with excessive visceral adipose tissue are significantly correlated with the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, it has not been explored among populations with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) subtypes. We aimed to investigate whether appendicular skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio (SVR), an indicator of sarcopenic obesity, influences on the risk of MAFLD subtypes and its hepatic condition in middle-aged and elderly population. METHODS: A total of 4,003 middle

Synergies and strategies underlying normal and vestibulary deficient control of balance: implication for neuroprosthetic control.

Future developments of neuroprosthetic control will probably permit locomotion and posture to be maintained without the aid of crutches and will therefore require some form of balance control. Three fundamental questions will arise. First, the question of the location of imbalance-sensing transducers must be assessed. Secondly, the synergy, which is the relative amplitude and timing of muscle activity, and/or the strategy of joint torques required to re-establish a stable posture for different types of balance disturbances must be addressed. Thirdly, the control laws that map either trunk musc

A Practical Rule-of-Thumb to Adapt Contrast Media Dose in Photon-counting Detector CT: The 10-to-5 Rule.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a simple rule-of-thumb on how to reduce the contrast medium (CM) dose in photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) when lowering the energy of the reconstructed virtual mono-energetic images (VMI) while maintaining the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) for parenchymal CT and CTA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Spectral abdominal and chest CT phantoms were scanned using a portal venous phase (PVP) abdominal and a high-pitch CTA protocol, respectively, on a first-generation dual-source PCD-CT. The phantoms contained cylindrical rods with iodine in water equivalent material (0.5/1.0/2.0/5.

Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery (SIEA) Flap For Autologous Breast Reconstruction: A Single-Institution Experience With Technical Pearls.

Introduction Autologous abdominal tissue transfer is considered the gold standard for breast reconstruction, providing natural composition and texture. The superficial inferior epigastric artery (SIEA) flap represents the least invasive option, sparing both the rectus muscle and fascia. However, its adoption remains limited due to concerns regarding arterial complications and donor site morbidity. We aimed to describe our experience with SIEA flaps in carefully selected patients and present technical pearls to optimise outcomes. Methods A retrospective chart review was performed of all breast

Neonatal high-dose riboflavin attenuates abdominal adiposity and binge eating associated with adipose metabolic remodeling in experimental cerebral palsy.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal immune activation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure is a critical factor in the pathogenesis of cerebral palsy (CP). This early inflammatory response predisposes the postnatal brain to hypoxic injury and metabolic dysregulation. Although hypoxic injury and metabolic dysregulation are well characterized individually, their interplay in CP and the potential role of metabolic modulators remain poorly understood. METHODS: We investigated the metabolic state of male Wistar rats in a CP model induced by gestational LPS (200 μg/kg) and postnatal anoxia at P0, and the

Targeting RUNX3 alleviates abdominal aortic aneurysm by ameliorating oxidative stress via mitophagy.

This study aims to investigate the role of RUNX3 in the pathogenesis and progression of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). AAA is a critical vascular disease characterized by progressive dilation of the aortic wall, and as the aneurysm grows, the risk of rupture significantly increases, leading to sharply elevated mortality. Recent studies have indicated that mitochondrial dysfunction plays a key role in the pathological process of AAA. This study focuses on RUNX3 and explores whether it participates in AAA progression by regulating mitophagy. AAA was induced in male C57BL/6 mice by pancreatic e

An antibody-conjugated polymer nanoparticle that targets inflammatory site for abdominal aortic aneurysm antioxidant stress therapy.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) tends to occur in the lower segment of the abdominal aorta in the elderly population. Its continuously growth and rupture risk seriously threaten the life and health of patients. AAA molecular pathomechanism is complex, its core mechanism is a IL-6 mediated immune response regulation and inflammatory mediators release, and b) oxidative stress triggered the programmed death of endothelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). Thereby, the damage to the blood vessel walls continues to worsen. The treatment of AAA with traditional drugs often has off-targ

Ancillary Diagnostic Utility of Glycoprotein Nonmetastatic Melanoma Protein B (GPNMB) in Diagnostically Challenging Hepatic Angiomyolipoma.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm within the perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) family that may pose significant diagnostic challenges because of its variable radiologic, histologic, and immunophenotypic features. HAML demonstrates a broad morphologic spectrum, including component-predominant and other uncommon histologic variants, which may obscure the classic triphasic morphology, particularly in limited biopsy specimens. Recently, glycoprotein nonmetastatic melanoma protein B (GPNMB) has emerged as a sensitive immunohistochemical marker for PEComa-family
