Maladaptive neural synchrony in tinnitus: origin and restoration.

Tinnitus is the conscious perception of sound heard in the absence of physical sound sources external or internal to the body, reflected in aberrant neural synchrony of spontaneous or resting-state brain activity. Neural synchrony is generated by the nearly simultaneous firing of individual neurons, of the synchronization of membrane-potential changes in local neural groups as reflected in the local field potentials, resulting in the presence of oscillatory brain waves in the EEG. Noise-induced hearing loss, often resulting in tinnitus, causes a reorganization of the tonotopic map in auditory

[Effect of course intake of bio-active flavonoids-containing plant preparation Extralife on the level of anxiety and sensorimotor reactivity in rats].

Clinical and epidemiological data evidence the need to search for new substances for treatment and prevention of increased anxiety associated with emotional and neurotic breakdown and worsening clinical prognosis of psychosomatic diseases. Of particular interest are the drugs of plant origin, which are generally well tolerated under prolonged use, and treat- ment is cheaper as compared with modem anxiolytics. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of course taking a flavonoid-containing plant preparation Extralife (water-soluble extract Pentaphylloides fruticosa, 40 mg/kg per

Microsuture after benign vocal fold lesion removal: a randomized trial.

PURPOSE: Removal of benign vocal fold lesions results in small to moderate-sized mucosal defect on vocal fold, which heals by secondary intention. Microsuturing this defect leads to primary wound healing with fastened recovery and less scar. However, its value has not been determined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is prospective, randomized, and controlled study performed in university hospital. Forty adults with vocal polyp, cyst, and Reinke's edema were included. Preoperatively, all patients completed VHI (Voice Handicap Index)-30, had acoustic analysis with continuous /a/ and videolaryngostr

Prospective electrophysiologic findings of round window stimulation in a model of experimentally induced stapes fixation.

HYPOTHESIS: Mechanical stimulation of the round window (RW) with an active middle ear implant (AMEI) with and without experimentally induced stapes fixation (SF) results in equivalent electrophysiologic measures of cochlear microphonic (CM), compound action potential (CAP), and auditory brainstem response (ABR). BACKGROUND: Where normal oval window functionality is mitigated, the RW provides a pathway to mechanically stimulate the inner ear. METHODS: Measurements of the CM, CAP, and ABR were made in 5 ears of 4 chinchillas with acoustic stimulation and with application of the AMEI to the RW

The survival attractor in the sensory functions: the example of hearing.

High noise levels may have an adverse effect on the normal cochlea function and lead to significant hearing loss. Clinically, exposure to high intensity impulse noise produces a wide range of audiometric effects which may result in long term or even irreversible symptoms. Nevertheless, there is sometimes a spontaneous rebound recovery of the auditory function. This phenomenon was previously studied in the vision, another sensory function. It was called the visual survival attractor. In view of the importance that the sensory organs have for the brain, and in particular in its function of recog

Genetic polymorphisms in GSTM1, -P1, -T1, and CYP2E1 and the risk of adult brain tumors.

GST and CYP2E1 genes are involved in metabolism of several compounds (e.g., solvents) that may play a role in brain cancer etiology. We evaluated associations between polymorphisms in these genes and adult brain tumor incidence. Cases were 782 patients with brain tumors diagnosed from 1994 to 1998 at three United States hospitals. Controls were 799 patients admitted to the same hospitals for nonmalignant conditions. DNA was extracted from blood samples that had been collected from 1277 subjects (80% of all subjects; 604 controls; 422 gliomas, 172 meningiomas, and 79 acoustic neuromas), and gen

Radiation force imaging of viscoelastic properties with reduced artifacts.

It is well-known that changes in the mechanical properties of tissues are correlated with the presence of disease. In the eye, for example, the vitreous body undergoes dramatic changes in mechanical properties during age-related degradation. These changes may play a significant role in the formation of retinal detachment or other vitreoretinal diseases. We previously presented a noninvasive method called kinetic acoustic vitreoretial examination (KAVE), which may be used to detect these mechanical changes. KAVE uses acoustic radiation force as a means to produce small, localized displacements

Clinical evaluation and investigation of patients with a sporadic vestibular schwannoma.

The incidence of vestibular schwannoma (VS) is increasing and patients with VS often have few symptoms. The aim of this chapter is to provide a framework for assessment and investigation of patients with sporadic vestibular schwannoma. Typical presentations, such as asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance disturbance, will be discussed, as well as atypical symptoms, highlighting potential red flags that could be the patients' only presenting symptom. An evidence-based approach to investigating patients with VS is discussed. This chapter explores the potential benefit of pe
