Alcohol-Induced Activation of Chemokine System and Neuroinflammation Development.

Chemokines are immunoregulatory proteins with pleiotropic functions involved in neuromodulation, neurogenesis, and neurotransmission. The way chemokines affect the CNS plays an important role in modulating various conditions that could have negative impact on CNS functions, including development of alcohol use disorders. In this review, we analyzed the literature data available on the problem of chemokine participation in pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and remission of alcohol use disorders both in animal models and in the study of patients with alcoholism. The presented information conf

Modern pharmacotherapy guidance for treating alcohol use disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is prevalent and recognized as a chronic, relapsing disorder. Even though effective treatment options are available, AUD is strongly undertreated. As adjuvant treatment strategies accompanying psychosocial treatments, pharmacological strategies can increase the efficacy of AUD treatment options. AREAS COVERED: After giving a brief update of epidemiology, neurobiology and treatment rationales for AUD, the review outlines pharmacological interventions against the background of current evidence. These include approved substances like naltrexone, nalmefene

Bifunctional PdMoPt trimetallene boosts alcohol-water electrolysis.

Substituting oxygen evolution with alcohol oxidation is crucial for enhancing the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at low voltages. However, the development of high-performance bifunctional catalysts remains a challenge. In this study, an ultrathin and porous PdMoPt trimetallene is developed using a wet-chemical strategy. The synergetic effect between alloying metals regulates the adsorption energy of reaction intermediates, resulting in exceptional activity and stability for the electrooxidation of various alcohols. Specifically, the mass activity of PdMoPt trimetallene toward the e…

Absenteeism, Presenteeism, and the Economic Costs of Alcohol Hangover in The Netherlands.

The alcohol hangover is defined as the combination of negative mental and physical symptoms that can be experienced after a single episode of alcohol consumption, starting when the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) approaches zero. Alcohol hangover symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and headache can negatively affect daily activities, including work performance. The alcohol hangover can therefore be a cause of both absenteeism (not going to work) and presenteeism (going to work while hungover). An online survey among a convenience sample of n = 347 Dutch adults examined the number of days of ab

Platelets in Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease: Interaction With Neutrophils.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a major contributor to liver-related mortality globally. An increasing body of evidence underscores the pivotal role of platelets throughout the spectrum of liver injury and recovery, offering unique insights into liver homeostasis and pathobiology. Alcoholic-associated steatohepatitis is characterized by the infiltration of hepatic neutrophils. Recent studies have highlighted the extensive distance neutrophils travel through sinusoids to reach the liver injury site, relying on a platelet-paved endothelium for efficient crawling. The adherence of plate

Non-invasive tests for alcohol-associated liver disease.

Alcohol consumption is a global phenomenon and a major contributor to alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). Detecting individuals at risk of ALD has been challenging, with only a small fraction of patients being identified at early stages compared to other chronic liver diseases. In response to this challenge, non-invasive tests (NITs) have become essential tools for the detection of ALD, offering opportunities for early identification and intervention to mitigate the disease burden. Noninvasive alcohol consumption biomarkers are crucial in estimating individuals' recent alcohol intake, prov

Synthesis of N-heterocycles through alcohol dehydrogenative coupling.

Nitrogen heterocycles are found in the structures of many biologically important compounds, as well as materials used in the synthesis of fine chemicals. Notably, ~59% of US Food and Drug Administration-approved small-molecule drugs contain nitrogen heterocycles. It is therefore meaningful to explore greener or more sustainable methods for their synthesis. The use of alcohols as reagents is attractive as they can be readily obtained from biomass derived natural resources. In the last two decades, alcohol dehydrogenative coupling reaction to synthesize various heterocycles were extensively expl…

[Reduced mobility in the elderly due to medication, alcohol, and cannabinoids].

Many diseases are accompanied by symptoms that can impair the ability to perform complex everyday tasks, such as active participation in road traffic. If a cure is not possible, the aim of drug therapy is to alleviate the symptoms to such an extent that the patient no longer has any restrictions in everyday life. However, around 20% of the approximately 100,000 medicines licensed in Germany have traffic-relevant side effects that can also lead to driving impairment. It is assumed that the effect of a drug is at least partially responsible for one in four traffic accidents and that one in ten vi

Oxidative desulfurization of fuels using alcohol-based DESs.

The presence of sulfur-containing compounds in fuel oil has become a major global issue due to their release of toxic sulfur dioxide. Hydrodesulfurization is a commonly used method for removing sulfur from fuel. However, new desulfurization techniques have been developed recently as hydrodesulfurization (HDS) is ineffective in removing refractory sulfur, e.g., BT, DBT, 4-MDBT. In this study, a series of deep eutectic solvent (DES) using ChCl, salicylic acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, and adipic acid as hydrogen bond acceptors and MeOH, EtOH, BuOH, EG, DEG, and TEG as hydrogen bond donors on di

Characteristics of sleep in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Sleep plays an important role in neurodevelopment. However, the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on sleep quality have been understudied, despite reports of sleep disturbance in infants prenatally exposed to alcohol and elevated levels of sleep problems reported by caregivers of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. The current study characterizes sleep in children with prenatal alcohol exposure using both objective (actigraphy) and subjective (questionnaires, sleep diaries) methods. METHODS: Participants aged 6-10 years, with and without prenatal alcohol exposure, w

A novel alcohol dehydrogenase in the hyperthermophilic crenarchaeon Hyperthermus butylicus.

Hyperthermus butylicus is a hyperthermophilic crenarchaeon that produces 1-butanol as an end product. A thermostable alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) must be present in H. butylicus to act as the key enzyme responsible for this production; however, the gene that encodes the ADH has not yet been identified. A novel ADH, HbADH2, was purified from a cell-free extract of H. butylicus, and its characteristics were determined. The gene that encodes HbADH2 was demonstrated to be HBUT_RS04850 and annotated as a hypothetical protein in H. butylicus. HbADH2 was found to be a primary-secondary ADH capable of

The Leukemoid Reaction in Severe Alcoholic Hepatitis: A Case Report.

Alcoholic hepatitis (AH) is a clinicopathologic illness caused by excessive alcohol abuse and is a precursor of cirrhosis. The leukemoid reaction (LR) is characterized by a strikingly raised granulocyte count of 40,000-50,000 cells/mm3. The LR usually suggests an acute inflammatory reaction. It is usually mistaken for chronic myeloid leukemia. The initial phase of leukocytosis occurs due to the releasing of cells from the bone marrow with more immature cells, causing a left upper shift in the ratio of immature to mature neutrophils and macrophages. The LR is usually seen in cases of leukemia b
