BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with progressive changes in glial cell dynamics, including altered morphology, activation states, and neuroimmune interactions of microglia, astrocytes, and other glial populations. These changes contribute to chronic neuroinflammation, impaired brain homeostasis, and increased vulnerability to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders. Non-pharmacological lifestyle interventions such as environmental enrichment (EE) and physical exercise (PE) have shown promise in modulating brain aging, but their comparative and combined effects on glial cells remain i…

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by amyloid plaques, tau tangles, and synaptic dysfunction. Despite decades of research, effective disease-modifying therapies remain elusive, highlighting the need for alternative therapeutic targets. While neurons have traditionally been the focus of AD studies, increasing evidence underscores critical roles for glial cells particularly microglia and astrocytes in disease progression. Mitochondrial calcium (mCa2+) dysregulation has emerged as a key contributor to neurodegeneration, yet how mCa2⁺ sig…

Spinal cord injury is a severe neurological condition characterized by the permanent loss of nerve cell function and a failure in neural cir … perfusion injury, further increasing the extent of nerve cell damage. The abnormal proliferation of astrocytes leads to the formation of glial scars, creating a physical barrier to nerve regeneration. The inflammatory response triggered by the excessive activation of microglia negatively impacts the process of nerve repair. Non-invasive interventions involvi …

Astrocyte-enriched marker, S100B, shows promise for gauging the severity of acute brain trauma, and understanding subconcussive effects will advance its utility in tracking real-time acute brain damage. The aim of the study was to investigate whether serum S100B elevations were associated with frequency and magnitude of subconcussive head impacts in adolescents. This prospective cohort study of 17 high-school football players consisted of the following 12 time points: pre-season baseline, 5 in-season pre-post games, and post-season. A sensor-installed mouthguard recorded the number of head imp

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem genetic disorder with variable clinical expression. We report the case of a 26-year-old woman who presented with characteristic cutaneous findings, including facial angiofibromas, periungual fibromas, and a fibrous cephalic plaque. Further evaluation revealed renal angiomyolipomas and retinal astrocytic hamartomas. Despite a history of childhood seizures, the diagnosis was delayed until adulthood. This case highlights the role of dermatological examination in identifying TSC, particularly in patients with subtle or asymptomatic systemic involve

The brain responds differently to environmental and internal signals that relate to the stage of development of neural systems. While genetic and epigenetic factors contribute to a premorbid state, hormonal fluctuations in women may alter the set point of migraine. The cyclic surges of gonadal hormones may directly alter neuronal, glial and astrocyte function throughout the brain. Estrogen is mainly excitatory and progesterone inhibitory on brain neuronal systems. These changes contribute to the allostatic load of the migraine condition that most notably starts at puberty in girls.

Brain tissue from three patients with a clinical diagnosis of Reye syndrome was compared with tissue from three control patients. All Reye syndrome patients demonstrated cytotoxic cerebral edema, with swelling of astrocyte foot processes, which was not seen in controls. Myelin sheath splitting was seen both in controls and patients, but myelin blebs were uncommon in both. Mitochondrial changes also were not seen. Although cerebral edema is a nonspecific finding, it appears to be characteristic of Reye syndrome.

The brain's gatekeeper, the blood-brain barrier (BBB), may undergo pathologic changes associated with the aging process. Substrate transport through the brain capillary endothelium, which makes up the BBB in vivo, is controlled by dynamic inputs from three other cells (astrocyte, pericyte, and neuron) that form direct physical contacts with the capillary endothelium. Thus, aging-related changes in any of these three cells may cause abnormalities in blood-brain barrier transport in the aged brain or in Alzheimer's disease.

We report an infant melanotic neuroectodermal tumor in the anterior part of the upper gingiva, which was associated with high urinary excretion of vanilmandelic acid. Serum levels of alpha-fetoprotein were abnormally high (200 ng/ml). They returned to normal after removal of the tumor (10 ng/ml). The tumor was characterized histologically and ultrastructurally by the presence of melanocytic and astrocytic cells containing glial fibrillary protein. Intracellular alpha-fetoprotein was demonstrated by the immunoperoxidase method (PAP) in scattered foci of interstitial cells.

A 32-year-old man with rapidly progressive dementia, pyramidal signs, myoclonic jerks and dystonic movements died following brain biopsy. neuropathological examination revealed minimal neuronal loss accompanied by mild spongiform change and astrocytic reaction. Numerous plaques and neurofibrillary tangles composed of paired helical filaments dominated the ultrastructural picture. This patient had features of both Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Alzheimer's disease, providing additional support for the existence of an overlap between these disorders.

Background/Objectives: Phthalates are a group of organic compounds widely used for enhancement in flexibility and transparency of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products. Exposure to phthalate-containing substances has been shown to affect brain function, particularly in learning and memory processes. Quercetin is a plant-derived flavonoid with remarkable anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. This study investigated the possible protective effects of quercetin on spatial learning and memory, histomorphometric changes, and hippocampal expression of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) in m

Impaired CO₂ responsiveness in epilepsy can result in hypoventilation and hypercapnia and these respiratory disturbances are key contributors to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). While mild to moderate inflammation is known to modulate respiratory function, its specific role in regulating respiratory responses in the context of epilepsy remains unclear. We studied the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation and microglial inhibition via minocycline during the acute and chronic phases of epilepsy on hypercapnic ventilatory responses (HCVR) in the intrahippocampal kai

Neuroinflammation plays a central role in the progression of tauopathy via the glial activation and T cell accumulation in the brain parenchyma. However, the key molecular mediators that link these processes to tau pathology remain poorly understood. Here, we identify C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) as a critical inflammatory mediator that is markedly upregulated in the brains of P301S-mutant tau transgenic mice and associated with regions of severe tau pathology. Spatial transcriptomics revealed that CXCL10 is mainly expressed by disease-associated astrocytes, defining an astrocytic C…

Diffuse gliomas are primary brain tumors including glioblastomas (GB), astrocytomas, and oligodendrogliomas, the latter two harboring IDH1 mutations and exhibiting slower progression. Gliomas display cellular plasticity, with transitions between astrocyte-like, oligodendrocyte-like, progenitor-like, and mesenchymal-like states driven by genetic alterations and microenvironmental signals. The proneural-to-mesenchymal transition (PMT), associated with increased malignancy, is tightly regulated by the tumor microenvironment, notably through cytokine signaling and non-tumor cell interactions. Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, with complex pathophysiological mechanisms and limited t … effects are highly cell type-specific, reflecting distinct functions of LRP1 in endothelial cells, astrocytes, microglia, neutrophils, and oligodendrocyte-lineage cells. This context-dependent complexity underscores the need for a systematic review of the role of LRP1 in stroke. Here, we summarize the structural features and physiological functions of LRP1 …

Overweight and obesity have emerged as global health crises and are increasingly recognized as drivers of central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction. Beyond excess energy storage, white adipose tissue (WAT) functions as an active endocrine and immune organ that, during obesity, undergoes inflammatory remodeling and releases cytokines, lipid mediators, adipokines, and extracellular vesicles that influence brain physiology. These peripheral signals disrupt key brain interfaces, including the blood-brain barrier (BBB), perivascular and glymphatic clearance pathways, promoting endothelial dysfunctio
