Graft versus host disease (GVHD) results from hyper-activation of transplanted lymphocytes against the host antigens. This project was undertaken to study the immunosuppressive capabilities of velogenic viscerotropic pathotype of Newcastle disease virus (VVNDV) infection in cockerels. Two hundred six-week-old cockerels were divided into four groups. Groups B/VUC and C/VC were vaccinated with LaSota in drinking water at 6 weeks of age. Groups C/VC and D/UC were challenged with VVNDV at 8 weeks of age. Three days post challenge (PC), the cockerels in group D/UC came down with clinical signs which included depression and greenish diarrhoea. Total mortality was 74.6 %. The C/VC cockerels showed no clinical signs.

The immunodeficiency, centromeric instability, and facial anomalies (ICF) syndrome is characterized by hypogammaglobulinemia and recurrent bacterial infections. Here we report a novel case of ICF syndrome with hypogammaglobulinemia and an inverted CD4/CD8 ratio. Cytogenetically abnormal cells,that were identified in both CD4+ and CD4- peripheral blood lymphocytes, retained their ability to proliferate in vitro following polyclonal stimulation. A primitive defect of B-cell differentiation was detected.

A 30 year old man presented with late stage HIV disease and intrathoracic lymphadenopathy. Histology of a mediastinal biopsy suggested infective follicular hyperplasia or a peripheral T cell lymphoma. Subsequently, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection was demonstrated in lymphocytes in the biopsy. Later, hepatosplenomegaly and peripheral lymphadenopathy developed. Histology of a cervical lymph node biopsy showed EBV associated diffuse large B cell (non-Hodgkin's) lymphoma.

Passive transfer of lymphocytes and sera from mice immunised using two different formulations containing recombinant protective antigen (rPA) have been used to further elucidate the mechanism of protection against Bacillus anthracis infection. The results demonstrated that an antibody response maybe important in protection against B. anthracis infection, under the conditions tested. The results provide further data for the development of an improved anthrax vaccine.

Theiler's virus causes chronic primary demyelination associated with viral persistence in SJL/J mice. We have investigated the effector functions of T lymphocytes isolated from inflammatory brain lesions to detect a local immune dysfunction associated with viral persistence. In vitro, CD4+ T cells induced B-lymphocyte proliferation and antibody secretion; CD8+ T cells had cytolytic activity. Therefore, Theiler's virus persistence does not include local immune unresponsiveness.

Human epidermal cells were cultured with pemphigus antibody in the presence of hydrocortisone, methylprednisolone sodium succinate, dapsone and gold. Hydrocortisone and methylprednisolone reduced the production of the enzyme plasminogen activator but dapsone and gold had no effect. These results support the hypothesis that corticosteroids have dual effects on pemphigus through inhibition of plasminogen activator production by epidermal cells and suppression of pemphigus antibody production by B lymphocytes.
