Development of the simulation-based German albuminuria screening model (S-GASM) for estimating the cost-effectiveness of albuminuria screening in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease is often asymptomatic in its early stages but constitutes a severe burden for patients and causes major healthcare systems costs worldwide. While models for assessing the cost-effectiveness of screening were proposed in the past, they often presented only a limited view. This study aimed to develop a simulation-based German Albuminuria Screening Model (S-GASM) and present some initial applications. METHODS: The model consists of an individual-based simulation of disease progression, considering age, gender, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diabetes,

Disparities in eating disorder symptoms and mental healthcare engagement prior to and following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic: Findings from a national study of US college students.

OBJECTIVE: Early COVID-19 eating disorders (EDs) research used regionally restricted samples with little sociodemographic diversity. The present study aimed to address these research gaps by examining whether pandemic-related changes in ED symptoms and mental healthcare prevalence differed for historically marginalized groups within a national sample of US college students. METHOD: Participants included 242,906 US college students (Mage  = 23.45, SD = 7.04; MBMI  = 25.28, SD = 5.91) who completed the repeated cross-sectional multi-institute Healthy Minds Study between January 2019 and May 202

Intrapancreatic, Liver, and Skeletal Muscle Fat Depositions in First Attack of Acute Pancreatitis Versus Health.

INTRODUCTION: Increased intrapancreatic fat deposition (IPFD) has emerged as a harbinger of pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis. Although it is well recognized that diseases of the exocrine pancreas often lie on a continuum (with acute pancreatitis preceding the development of chronic pancreatitis and/or pancreatic cancer), whether increased IPFD predisposes to acute pancreatitis is unknown. This study aimed to compare fat depositions in the pancreas (as well as the liver and skeletal muscle) between individuals who developed first attack of acute pancreatitis and healthy individuals.

In Vivo Models for Hypertrophic Scars-A Systematic Review.

Backgroundand Objectives: Hypertrophic scars following surgeries or burns present a serious concern for many patients because these scars not only lead to an aesthetical but also to a functional and psychological burden. Treatment of hypertrophic scars is challenging because despite various treatment options, a low level of evidence hinders preference of any specific treatment plan. To properly identify new therapeutic approaches, the use of in vivo models remains indispensable. A gold standard for hypertrophic scars has not been established to date. This review aims at giving a comprehensive

The Effect of Cerebrolysin on Anxiety, Depression, and Cognition in Moderate and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Patients: A CAPTAIN II Retrospective Trial Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Traumatic brain injuries represent an important source of disease burden requiring emergency inpatient care and continuous outpatient tailored rehabilitation. Although most TBIs are mild, patients are still developing post-TBI depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairments. Our secondary retrospective trial analysis aimed to (1) analyze correlations between HADS-Anxiety/HADS-Depression and scales that measure cognitive and motor processes in patients treated with Cerebrolysin compared to the placebo group and (2) compare anxiety and depression scores among the two tr

Assessment of quality of life determinants in hemodialysis patients of a developing country: A cross-sectional study during ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Patients of end-stage renal disease are prone to have a very low quality of life (QoL). Variety of factors influence the QoL among sufferers of chronic kidney disease comprising of type of dialysis, sufficiency/adequacy of dialysis, and associated burden of disease. We conducted this study amidst the pandemic to determine the associated factors for poor QoL in hemodialysis patients during the ongoing pandemic. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a hemodialysis unit of a tertiary care hospital. A total of 118 participants responded to th

Malaria Epidemiology and COVID-19 Pandemic: Are They Interrelated?

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a systemic disease, impacting multiple organs in the human body. But COVID-19 also impacts other diseases of relevance to public and planetary health. To understand and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, we need an intersectional conceptual lens and systems thinking. For example, the strain on health care systems due to COVID-19 has adversely impacted global malaria elimination programs. With many epidemiological, clinical, and biological parallels documented, we examined in this study the scenario of malaria and COVID-19 syndemic in India. The disruptive

Sleep apnea and eye diseases: evidence of association and potential pathogenic mechanisms.

UNLABELLED: Eye diseases are an important group of increasingly prevalent disorders that contribute very significantly to disability and represent a considerable health burden. Some data suggest that several of these diseases may be associated with sleep-disordered breathing, mainly obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), due to intermediate mechanisms, such as intermittent hypoxia or sleep fragmentation. The aims of this systematic review were to identify and critically evaluate the current evidence supporting the existence of a possible relationship between OSA and the more relevant eye diseases as w

Robotic stereotactic body radiotherapy for the management of adrenal gland metastases: a bi-institutional analysis.

PURPOSE: Adrenal gland metastases (AGMs) are a common manifestation of metastatic tumor spread, especially in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). In patients with a limited systemic tumor burden, effective treatments for AGMs are needed. Due to varying fractionation schemes and limited reports, short-course treatment results for stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for AGMs are lacking. This work analyzes the outcomes of short-course SBRT for AGMs. METHODS: Patients who underwent robotic SBRT for AGMs with one to five fractions were eligible for analysis. R

A multi-disciplinary, comprehensive approach to management of children with heterotaxy.

Heterotaxy (HTX) is a rare condition of abnormal thoraco-abdominal organ arrangement across the left-right axis of the body. The pathogenesis of HTX includes a derangement of the complex signaling at the left-right organizer early in embryogenesis involving motile and non-motile cilia. It can be inherited as a single-gene disorder, a phenotypic feature of a known genetic syndrome or without any clear genetic etiology. Most patients with HTX have complex cardiovascular malformations requiring surgical intervention. Surgical risks are relatively high due to several serious comorbidities often se
