An atlas of the brain of the electric fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus.

This atlas consists of a set of six macrophotographs illustrating the important external landmarks of the apteronotid brain, as well as 54 transverse levels through the brain stained with cresyl violet. There are 150 microns between levels and the scales have 1 mm divisions (100 microns small divisions). In general the neuroanatomy of this brain is similar to that of other teleosts except that all parts known to be concerned with electroreception are greatly hypertrophied (electrosensory lateral line lobe, nucleus praeminentialis, caudal lobe of the cerebellum, torus semicircularis dorsalis, o

Acoustic trauma in extracranial magnetic brain stimulation.

The effects of the magnetic coil acoustic artifact (MCAA) associated with extracranial magnetic field stimulation (EMFS) of the brain were studied in normal hearing rabbits. Spectral and intensity analyses showed that the MCAA is a high intensity transient signal with peak energy between 2 and 5 kHz, and peak amplitudes in the first 100-200 mu sec. At EMFS levels of 50-100% of maximum output (2.0 Tesla), the corresponding MCAA levels were 131-142 dB sound pressure level (peak hold) at the outer ear and amplified by the external meatus to reach 145-157 dB sound pressure level (SPL) at the posit

Auditory evoked responses (ABR, MLR, SVR) and brain mapping in the elderly.

The influence of age on evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) is still a matter of controversy. It is well known that in the elderly the ABRs show a progressive latency shift of the principal components. While many authors have reported a I-V internal latency shift, others claim that there is not a delay in the central conduction time (CCT) with ageing. Middle latency auditory evoked responses (MLRs) are also reported to be impaired in the elderly, but the few results published need further investigations. This study investigates some of the controversial aspects of electrophysiological a

Heterogeneity, distribution and endogenous phosphate content of KCl-myosins prepared from different parts of human brain.

Myosin concentrations and their endogenous phosphate (P) content as well as some of their properties were investigated in different parts of the central nervous system (CNS). Myosin concentration in hemispherial part is in the average 40 mg/100 g fresh mince, but it varies between 5 mg and 30 mg myosin depending on the mental activity or accidental brain diseases. This refers to the other parts of CNS, too. A myosin may be isolated with a single and sharp peak as far as the gel filtration profile is concerned in spite of the high lipid content of the brain. Working with minimal lipid and RNA c

[An assessment of outcome prediction in patients with severe brain damage with auditory brainstem response and blink reflex].

Results of auditory brainstem response (ABR) and electrically elicited blink reflex (BR) recorded from 43 patients with severe brain damage within three days after the onset of illness were analyzed to assess the prognostic value of ABR and BR with respect to patient outcome evaluated by the criteria proposed by Jennett and Bond. It was possible to recognize, in recordings obtained from patients with severe brain damage, three basic patterns of BR as well as five patterns of ABR within three days after the onset. Three basic patterns of BR were composed of Type I, which closely approximated th

Considerations in the differentiation between brainstem lesions and sensori-neural hearing loss using auditory nerve-brainstem evoked responses.

When auditory nerve-brainstem evoked responses are used in neurological diagnosis, an important response parameter to be evaluated is brainstem transmission time - the time interval between the auditory nerve response (wave 1) and the response from the rostal brainstem (wave P4). Occasionally the only response wave present is wave P4 and its latency is prolonged. This can be compatible with a conductive or a sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), or a neurological (brain stem) lesion such as a retrocochlear hearing loss (RCHL). A conductive hearing loss can be excluded by otoscopic, audiometric an…

[An autopsy case of primary intracranial melanoma associated with dermoid cyst (author's transl)].

Primary malignant melanoma of the cerebral nervous system is an uncommon entity. A case of primary intracranial melanoma associated with dermoid cyst is reported. The patient was a 40-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital on May 2, 1979 complaining of headache, double vision, left hemiparesis and Jacksonian seizure. On admission he had a slight degree of papilledema. Left abdominal reflex was absent. Lumbar puncture showed high pressure of the cerebrospinal fluid which was otherwise normal. Plain skull films showed a calcification in the pineal region. CT scan demonstrated multiple hig

Abducens internuclear neurons and their role in conjugate horizontal gaze.

Experimental evidence suggests that brain stem lesions producing paralysis of lateral gaze and dissociation of conjugate horizontal eye movements have certain common features. Both of these disturbances involve abducens internuclear neurons (Abd IN) or their projections. Attempts were made to determine the course and terminal distribution of Abd IN in the monkey by autoradiographic techniques. Tritiated amino acids injected in the abducens nucleus (Abd N) labeled: (1) root fibers ipsilaterally, and (2) fibers that ascended in medial parts of the contralateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (ML…

[A case of total hemipherectomy].

The author described a case of extensive total hemispherectomy extending to the red nucleus, gave a review of the literature of such conditions together with a brief historical review. He analysed in detail the secondary degenerative changes of the nervous tracts within the brainstem. The histological study of the remaining hemisphere, the cerebellum and the membranes revealed the following: 1) a false sub-dural membrane within the surgical space, proliferation of the arachnoidal cells and a granular ependymitis, changes which were interpreted as an attempt to fill the empty space resulting fr

Effects of thiamin deficiency on acetylcholine levels and utilization in vivo in rat brain.

Cerebral regional acetylcholine (ACh) levels and utilization were studied in vivo in thiamin deficient (TD), pair-fed asymptomatic (PFC) and ad libitum fed control (ALC) rats. ACh levels in the cortex, corpus striatum, midbrain, diencephalon and brainstem of TD rats were comparable to those observed in the control groups. However, ACh utilization was slightly to moderately (10-41%) decreased in cortex, midbrain, diencephalon and brainstem. The decrease was significantly different in the midbrain of TD rats as compared to PFC and ALC rats.

Radiation therapy of tumors of the central nervous system in childhood.

The results of radiation therapy for CNS tumors of childhood are presented and discussed according to histologic type. In this material the 5-year recurrence-free survival rates were about 35% for medulloblastomas, 48% for the hypothalamic and brain stem tumors, 86% for lowgrade ependymomas, and 57% for germinomas. Complications or CNS injury from irradiation were rare and the quality of life in survivors was generally good. Current methods of radiation therapy may possibly improve these results. Tumors of the CNS in children do not necessarily carry a hopeless prognosis; aggressive therapy is…

Cognitive recovery after severe head injury. 2. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale during post-traumatic amnesia.

The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) was administered to two matched groups of severely head-injured patients. The first administration was early in the recovery period, when group I was still in post-traumatic amnesia. The WaiS results for this group were significantly lower than those of group II, who were fully conscious. A follow-up at a later stage of recovery found that group I had substantially caught up with group II on the WAIS. At both administrations the WAIS subtest scores were correlated with clinical data, and changes in the pattern of correlations between PTA and full co

Increased Amyloidogenic Neuronal Injury in HIV-1-infected APP-KI Alzheimer's disease mice.

INTRODUCTION: A higher incidence of dementia, including Alzheimer's-like pathology, is observed in aged people living with human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1). However, mechanisms linking HIV-1 to Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology remain unclear, due to the lack of animal models that allow for concurrent studies of HIV-1 and AD. METHODS: We created a novel amyloid precursor protein (APP) (Swedish mutation) knock-in (KI) AD mouse on an immunocompromised NOG background, NOG/APPKM670,671NL/IL-34 (NAIL). Following CD34+ hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) reconstitution, humanized hNAIL mice develo

Dynamic changes in BDNF, VEGF, and GDNF after transplanting human protein-based scaffolds with Wharton's Jelly MSCs in a rat brain injury model.

Stroke poses a considerable challenge for regenerative medicine due to the complex and multidimensional specificity of the central nervous system, and cell therapy is one of the currently considered treatments. The aim of this study was to determine the pro-regenerative outcome after transplantation of preconditioned and scaffold-encapsulated mesenchymal stem/stromal cells isolated from Wharton's Jelly (WJ-MSCs) in an experimental rat model of brain injury. For this purpose, WJ-MSCs cultured at different oxygen concentrations (21% O2 or 5% O2) were transplanted into the injured rat brain in sa

Unraveling the Bone-Brain Communication Network.

The bone and brain, though distinct in structure and function, share remarkable physical, molecular, and developmental similarities. Emerging evidence reveals dynamic bidirectional crosstalk between these systems mediated by hormones, cytokines, extracellular vesicles (EVs), and neural signals. Bone-derived factors such as osteocalcin (OCN), lipocalin-2, and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) 23 influence cognitive functions, mood, and neurogenesis, while brain- and nerve-derived mediators, including leptin, serotonin, and sympathetic signals, modulate bone remodeling. Inflammation and aging disru

One-Stop Microfluidic Assembly of Human Brain Organoids To Model Prenatal Cannabis Exposure.

Prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) influences human brain development, but it is challenging to model PCE using animals and current cell culture techniques. Here, we developed a one-stop microfluidic platform to assemble and culture human cerebral organoids from human embryonic stem cells (hESC) to investigate the effect of PCE on early human brain development. By incorporating perfusable culture chambers, air-liquid interface, and one-stop protocol, this microfluidic platform can simplify the fabrication procedure and produce a large number of organoids (169 organoids per 3.5 cm × 3.5 cm device
