BACKGROUND: Human cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a life-threatening zoonosis caused by the Echinococcus granulosus (sensu lato). Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the world. The coexistence of CE and HCC is exceedingly rare, and only several well-documented cases have been reported. In addition to this coexistence, there is no report of the coexistence of CE, HCC, and liver abscess to date. Herein, we aimed to report a case of coexistence of liver abscess, hepatic CE, and HCC.
CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old herdsman presented to the department of int…

Hilar cavernous transformation is the formation of venous structures rich in collateral around the portal vein. Portal vein thrombosis is a rare entity. Although there are many reasons for its etiology, few cases have been reported secondary to hydatid cysts in the liver. Here, we present a 24-year-old patient with complaints of abdominal pain and swelling. Her CT and MRI scans show cholelithiasis with portal vein thrombosis and hilar cavernous transformation due to giant hydatid cyst compression in the lateral liver sector.

Hepatic cystic echinococcosis (HCE) is a zoonotic disease that occurs when the larvae of Echinococcus granulosus parasitize the livers of humans and mammals. HCE has five subtypes, and accurate subtype classification is critical for choosing a treatment strategy. To evaluate the clinical utility of artificial intelligence (AI) based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in the classification of HCE subtypes via ultrasound imaging, we collected ultrasound images from 4,012 HCE patients at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University between 2008 and 2020. Specifically, 1,820 H…

Hydatid disease (cystic echinococcosis) is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Hydatid cysts are typically found in the liver and lungs, but they can also rarely occur in the spleen. This case report describes an unusual occurrence of a splenic hydatid cyst that perforated the posterior wall of the stomach. The patient, a 55-year-old female, presented with severe pain in the left hypochondrium and nausea. A computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a large, complex mass in the spleen with multiple hydatid cysts and a perforation of approximately 5 × 5 cm into the stomach wall…

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a potentially fatal systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) that threatens millions of lives worldwide. Echinococcus granulosus antigen B (EgAgB) is a protein released by the larvae of the tapeworm. This protein has been shown to play an important role in modulating host immune response. In this study we expressed EgAgB as soluble recombinant protein in E. coli (rEgAgB) and explored its protective effect on sepsis.
METHODS: The sepsis model was established by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) procedure in BALB/c mice. The therapeutic effect of rEgAgB on sepsis was…

The influence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on the severity of hepatic cystic echinococcosis (CE) is uncertain. HIV-modulated immune suppression may increase the risk of contracting CE with less self-limiting disease, more rapid progression, and a higher likelihood of complications. A 30-year-old male with concurrent, untreated HIV underwent surgery for two large, complicated hepatic CE cysts, which were replacing the right hemiliver, and innumerable peritoneal daughter cysts. At operation, 30 kg of cystic material was removed from the liver and peritoneal cavity. Despite postoperative…

Echinococcosis is considered one of the world's most dangerous zoonoses, and the tapeworm that causes it is one of the two most dangerous parasites to humans globally. Untreated cases may be associated with as high as 90% mortality. The incidence of this pathology is increasing. The authors present an up-to-date review of the literature on liver echinococcosis; they also present their own material of 73 patients with liver echinococcosis treated in the Department of General and Transplant Surgery since 2019.

Echinococcosis is a common zoonotic disease in livestock; the type with the highest incidence is cystic echinococcosis (CE). In clinical management, patients with CE of the liver in which the cyst wall is calcified have been found to have better prognoses than those without calcification. In this study, we collected calcified and uncalcified cyst wall tissue from patients with hepatic CE and observed significant changes in the expression of 2336 messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs), 178 long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), 210 microRNAs (miRNAs), and 33 circular RNAs (circRNAs) using high-throughput …

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection caused by the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm, primarily affecting the liver and lungs, and rarely involving muscle tissue. Humans are infected by ingesting eggs from contaminated food or water. Patients may present with painless, slow-growing masses, sometimes associated with nerve or vessel compression, especially in cases of muscle involvement. Diagnostic imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, CT scan, and MRI are essential for preoperative evaluation. Treatment involves surgical removal of the cyst with careful lavage to prevent recurrence, fol…

Echinococcus granulosus remains a global public health issue. Although predominantly affecting the liver, the lungs are the second most affected organ and often undergo surgical intervention. Here, a case managed by bronchoscopy and medical therapy is presented. A 26-year-old woman was presented with a cough, hemoptysis, and a 5 kg weight loss in the last two months. Chest imaging identified a 4 cm centrally cystic mass lesion in the middle lobe of the right lung, which was suspicious of lung cancer. Bronchoscopy revealed a whitish, plastic-like object that was difficult to extricate and obstr…

Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) is a species complex with the potential to cause cystic echinococcosis (CE). Contact with the feces of domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) fed with raw viscera of intermediate livestock hosts is a risk factor for this infection in the southern region of Brazil. Although the region has been considered endemic to CE for many years, molecular data regarding the species of the complex causing CE in humans are scarce. This study aimed to perform a molecular analysis of the biological fluid from a human liver cyst to investigate the species responsible for CE. …

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic infection caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. The disease is characterized by the long-term growth of cysts, most commonly in the liver and lungs. Although an ideal model of cystic echinococcosis should induce the development of cysts in the liver and imitate the natural infection route, the murine model of intraperitoneal is still widely used in the field of experimental theraphy. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the usefulness of the murine model of hepatic CE for preclinical drug trials. The effectiveness of albend…

Hydatidosis is an infection caused by the helminth Echinococcus granulosus. The liver and lungs are the most frequently affected organs, primarily due to their roles in filtering blood. Primary hydatidosis of the skeletal muscles is an exceedingly rare condition, often asymptomatic, which can lead to its misdiagnosis as a more common soft tissue tumour. This case report presents a case of primary hydatidosis localized in the vastus medialis muscle of the thigh in a man in his early 70s. The patient exhibited a chronic swelling in his right thigh that persisted for four years, gradually increas…

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease that affects the liver in more than 70% of cases, and there is still an underestimated incidence in endemic areas. With a peculiar clinical presentation that ranges from paucisymptomatic illness to severe and possibly fatal complications, quality imaging and serological studies are required for diagnosis. The mainstay of treatment to date is surgery combined with antiparasitic agents. The surgical armamentarium consists of open and laparoscopic procedures for selected cases with growing confidence in parenchyma-sparing interventions. Endosc…
