BACKGROUND: We performed an experiment to assess whether in ciliary processes adrenergic-receptor agents can modulate the production of nitrite, an oxidized metabolite of nitric oxide (NO).
METHODS: The porcine ciliary processes and the iris were dissected and stored at -20 degrees C. Later, tissues were thawed, and nitrite measured by Griess reaction, before and 2 h after exposure to various drugs.

PURPOSE: This study was designed to assess the correlation between flow velocity, the resistive index and visual field defects in patients with chronic open angle glaucoma in comparison with a nonglaucomatous control population.

Protein phosphorylation in response to polylysine was investigated in vitro in rabbit ciliary process homogenates by SDS-PAGE autoradiography. The degree of phosphorylation was greater in the soluble/cytoplasmic fraction than in the particulate fraction and was antagonized by heparin. We compared the depth of the anterior chamber and the optimal distance refraction in a group of patients with soft and rigid intraocular implants under pilocarpine (maximal ciliary contraction) and cyclopentolate (maximal ciliary relaxation) in order to determine if lens movement might account for the apparent accommodation phenomenon. Lens shifts ranging from 1.5 to 0.02 mm and refractive variations up to 1 D were found. However, the discrepancies between amount of shift and refractive variations suggest that lens movement does not play a relevant role in this phenomenon.

Following Molteno device implantation, trabeculectomy, or needling revision of trabeculectomy, six eyes of six chronic glaucoma patients developed a flat anterior chamber without hypotony, ciliochoroidal detachment, pupillary block, or external wound leak. A prospective gonioscopic evaluation was carried out upon a cohort of Greek patients who had undergone trabeculectomy for open-angle glaucoma. This is the first report describing the syndrome of hypotony and ciliochoroidal detachment following pharmacologic aqueous suppressant therapy in previously filtered eyes. Four patients had a history of advanced primary open-angle glaucoma treated with multiple medical therapies, including timolol for 11 to 36 months.
